Yeah, the story is not supposed to be upfront and in your face. You piece it together through gradually gathering disks which feature pieces of a recording about the universe, like Cycle said.
There's also that hallway of records or whatever which is both an amusing gimmick and absurdly frustrating, since it's actually entertaining to read (especially if you're familiar with, say, the Bible). After you've seen it inthe game, it's worth grabbing a text file with all the writing in it from a fansite.
Man, I can't imagine what it would've been like to be the Japanese localizer and first lay eyes on that. No wonder they cut it out. Kind of ruins the effect, though....

man, no wonder you think the game is bad. That loading totally kills it. |
I'm sorry DAIS even without the loading that still looks completely unentertaining.
EDIT: this looks pretty fun. But still ugly as sin. _________________

Ignoring all your suggestions I went and dug up a copy of ultima IX from my pile of games I never ever played. I'm not sure why I'm picking this up. It has a bunch of mediocre reviews and seeing how it's an open ended 3d exploration game it's probably long as fuck. But I must! It comes in this really pretty box too. I <3 garage sales.
I tihnk I should give my french copy of dungeon siege a try as well. I should probably play this before ultima actually.
I also have these random CDs for "starship", "pray for death", and these two wonderful games called "riven" (actually 5 CDs) and "gizmos and gadgets".
But I think these will have to wait. |

Never has there been a better time to check out Dosbox and illegally download old games from back when PC gaming still had its soul (I kid! I kid!). Stuff like Street Rod 2, Commander Keens 1 and 4-6, the Jill of the Jungle series, Raptor: Call of the Shadows, Duke Nukem 3d (though there's a program called Eduke32 that works better than Dosbox), and maybe even a little Oregon Trail Deluxe here and there.
I would link you to such things, but there is far more that a simple google search could tell you than I ever could. Plus, uh... some of it is quite illegal despite its old age and I am unfamiliar with the policy on such things on this website.
As for more legal things, why not check out the Incredible Machine series? More specifically, Return of the Incredible Machine: Contraptions.

You know, I use to LOVE the incredible machine games and then I bought return of the incredible machine: contraptions from a scholastic book order and I thought that game sucked :(. i've gone back to it like 3 times for nostalgia sake and never could really get into it like I did back with the older ones...
Also Jill of the Jungle FTW. I lost the floppy for it though :(. There's a series :D? |

I love the Neverhood and all but it really really hates to run on Windows XP.
And even I don't own a legitimate copy of it anymore. <:(
But alice, maybe you should peruse some of the stuff on Gametap (if your computer can handle its massive resource-hogging interface running in the background). Most of them qualify as "old-ish", and I know for a fact Thief and Psychonauts are in the free rotation right now.
EDIT: whoa I was a page behind. this is embarrassing.

what wadf? I played that for 3 minutes before I quit. Unlike knytt, I saw little redeeming value in the so called 'deep forest' aesthetics and the poorly animated bouncy ball.
Also I'm gonna go ahead and recommend American Mcgee's alice to myself but I accidentally deleted the save file when I was about halfway through the game so I'll probably never pick up the game again. |
I was thinking Knytt Stories, actually. dess made some neat tales for that one! _________________

oh come on. You are definitely not giving these games enough time. WaDF has some really nice platforming mechanics and great physics for the ball and all its iterations--you can't be serious that it's poorly animated? If anything, the animation is simple and fluid. What I like about it is the lack of any real "jump" button, only an "increase bounce" button. It seems like you write games off way too quickly.
I donno man. Dungeon Siege...Ultima IX...Alice...something's wrong with this picture. Do not trust this poster!
I kid.
Also: wasn't septerra core pretty textbook? Was there something interesting about it I missed? _________________ metafilter vs. youtube comments |

You'll find that Dungeon Siege is surprisingly competent. It's completely generic, but not unfun. As a bonus, DS2 doesn't look much better, graphically, so you can pretend you're playing a recent game!
American McGee's Alice is a good choice!
Oni might be worth your time if you try it and like it; you should be able to find a demo.
Command & Conquer is literally free now, so if you haven't played one of the most important RTSs ever, here's your chance!
Obviously, SimCity (2000 or 3000, your choice) and SimTower deserve some attention if you've any left to give. |

If they are then they shouldn't be! They are marvelous games. I still fervently hope that we will see a third game someday.
And I loved the Neverhood, but it was more for the goofy atmosphere and music than for the game-y bits. Come on guys! It's a stop-motion video game! The Earthworm Jim guy made it! Admittedly, the first-person bits look EXTREMELY grainy nowadays...
Anyway. Even if you don't like the game, download and listen to the soundtrack.
On that note, has anyone here ever played SkullMonkeys? _________________

I was just thinking about Albion the other day. I think I always got to the part where you had to leave the beginning village and start fighting things. I think I used to wish it was just an adventure game. Every few years though I try to play through it again though, because I love the color green. I might try now _________________ When asked how to avoid lust of the flesh, Diogenes began to play God Hand in answer. I'd recommend: Shogo, any of the Mech Warrior games, Myth 2, Duke 3d, Fury3, the Kings Quest games, Carmageddon, Red Alert, Dungeon Siege, any Lucas Arts adventure games.
I remember really enjoying Muppet's Treasure Island as a kid, I wonder if I'd still like it.
Checking this thread after work for more recommendations.
EDIT: forgot to mention Yoda Stories. Puzzle/adventure game where each game only lasted a couple hours, but every time you played was a random world with random puzzles. It saved the number of times you won, earning you stuff with more play-throughs. After a few games, you fought Vader and got to use his lightsaber in subsequent games. Think you could get the force that way too. |

It's not D&D based. Nobody payed much attention to Anvil when it came out, mostly because of Stonekeep. Anvil is the better game though, in my opinion. It had a lot of neat things like coming across the characters you didn't play as over the course of game, and unlike Stonekeep I thought it had a more interesting setting and varied locations. _________________ When asked how to avoid lust of the flesh, Diogenes began to play God Hand in answer. well I might, just might go back to dungeon siege. I've never played a open-world rpg before except maybe GTAVC and it's non numeric sequel so maybe I should say I've never played a non-urban open-world rpg. Semantics aside, the beginning of the game is worse than twilight princess and I still have yet to find my set of adventuring clothes. I should mention I played this game like 3 years ago when I got it before quitting because I had no idea what I was suppose to do (I guess I never realized the game came with the strategy guide). I also vaguely seem to remember finding the beginning of the game extremely interesting what with you in modern times being teleported to the fantasy world of Brittania. Playing it again now I have no idea what I was thinking because not only is being transported to another world/dimension/time completely overdone (secret of evermore, chrono trigger anyone?) but the game doesn't even try to hide the fact that the 'hero' has no idea of this other dimension. Right at the beginning of the game you have this disembodied voice giving you 'helpful' tips on how to play the god damn game. Moreover I swear it'll be at least another 2 hours before I actually get to Brittania and also seem to recall this annoying jumping puzzle right at the beginning. Ug.
So Dungeon Siege was fun for all of 5 hours and now I think the game is painstakingly repetitive with totally broken AI, a completely stupid and unbalanced class item and inventory system and a terrible UI. I remember why I hate video games now.
I kind of want to give relentless a try because I remember my friend ranting about it being a totally awesome game when I was a kid. I don't even know if i'm thinking of the same relentless here. Or maybe I should do Riven again. hmm
Yes I know I'm passing judgment far too fast on WaDF but I stopped playing WaDF because I didn't find it all that compelling to keep going. I've heard a lot of critical acclaim about it since and don't claim that the game doesn't have anymore to it than i saw out of those 3 minutes. Unfortunately, after my rather depressing 30 minutes with knytt, I feel even less compulsion to go back and try WaDF again. I should also say that I was not predisposed to dislike knytt as I am with certain things. I actually fell in love with the screenshots of knytt but was disappointed when the gameplay featured little more than a bunch of screenshots chained together. |

Heck yeah! Well, I mean, it's the same engine, but there's 3 different games. Jill 2 is my favorite of the series, though it's broken as hell at some points. There's one level that is pretty much impossible to beat without dying. Good thing is if you die the enemies stay dead, so you spend like 10 minutes fighting these nigh-impossible enemies, dying, respawning a mile away and walking back, dying again, and eventually you kill them all and move on with the rest of the game.
I recommend them, definitely. I don't know what it is about Jill of the Jungle, but I just love to play it. Maybe it's the atmosphere? I'll go with that. _________________
