out at http://www.piersolar.com/
The story seems interesting and not showing signs of major clichés so far, a dieing father, the son and his friends setting out to find life saving herbs in a dangerous cave deep in the woods.
Thus far the graphics of the game looks pretty nice and detailed and the town Im in is pretty well populated and built up. Lots of detail, lots of movement.
Dialog can be a little overly wordy but the characters seem like fairly original creations. There is a lot more inter party interaction than Ive become used to and it works.
The battle system is currently a stand in but gets the job done.
The music and art is especially good in the cave portion of the demo.
check it out!!
OH! and the full game is only 35 dollars and comes with the region free sega CD and genesis cart. Turns out the cart can load it's music from the CD so you get cd sound without the limitation of a purely Sega CD game (what ever those are).
ships December 24th apparently. _________________

This looks interesting...
There really needs to be a law against flash sites with no kill sound buttons. |

One of the project leaders told me that programming for the Sega CD was pretty nightmarish, so they gave up on that. You can't use the cd standalone, only the sound will load from it on a Sega CD. This is bad news for those who wanted to emulate the cd version via X-Box or PC, but nothing else. |

Bummer. Well I guess on the up-side they have more space for audio.
Thanks for the info! _________________

DESS Y R U SO MEEN TO INDIE GAMEPPLZ
edit: on the other hand, has there ever been a really good one of these things? it's a bad sign, i think, when a developer's imagination is so inextricably tied to a dead platform. it's cute, but kinda pathetic. _________________

only a complete douchebag would use a typewriter these days, way to prove my point!
seriously though imposing technical limitations and/or simulating an antiquated style is one thing but romancing a particular piece of hardware against all common sense is really another. the latter is fanboyish and kind of disgustingly out of touch with the real world, born out of nothing more than the desire to "make a real game for my favorite console, just like i dreamed as a kid!" which is understandable but not when it comes at a severe cost to potential userbase, ease of development, etc etc. there's cave story and there's bob's game, nahmean? and at least people are still buying ds games.

i can't really say for sure not having played the game but just from what dess typed it sounds like railroading so clumsy and naked it would make modern zelda blush. _________________

what lead you to believe this particular effort was a fanboyish romancing of antiquated hardware aginst all common sense? Dose "common sense" include some sort of anti old technology bias? You seem to be taking your opinions on old machines and supposing them to be gospel. Is the chip music scene trash because people make music on the comidore 64?
Im just kind of not getting why it wouldn't be fun to program something for old hardware... Like any limitation imposed is going to shape your focus, for example on a type writer your going to focus on making your writing flow out right the first time instead of careless carving and shimming endlessly.
Ok so like are all genre pieces fanboyish and terrible by their very nature? If you make a film about the old west are you just a johnwayne fanboy and should be intsantly written off as such?
All dess did was miss the one bit of explanitory dialog that tells you, hey we should prolly go back to my house and get some stuff so monsters don't instantly kill us when we get in a fight. It was all togeather maybe 3 paragraphs worth of text. _________________

I'm pretty sure La Mulana was pretty obviously a fanboyish imitation of the games for the Sega Master System. It's not a huge leap between "make a game that intentionally imitates the style of games on system x" and "make a game on system x," anyway. I would mark this as a flaw - games should be made with inspiration, not imitation - but not a game-killing one, as I hear that La Mulana game worked out pretty good!
As for this Pier Solar game, I would totally be playing it right now if Flash worked on my Linux install. Incidentally, it doesn't bode well for the game that you need Flash to get it! Maybe they will work on a Genesis port of Flash Player? |

Are you saying it took a long time to get into A Link to the Past? Or do you mean, every one after that?
I think LTTP is the last console Zelda where you didn't have to fuck around for 12 hours before you could actually play the damn game.
There's a little bit of exposition in the beginning, which mostly teaches you the throw mechanic, but it's a fairly breezy and you get to the slash slash stuff pretty quick. |
