|
|
After an extremely lengthy betatest period, Aeon Genesis has released a completed translation of Metal Max Returns, a post-apocalyptic RPG with a strong emphasis on heavy artillery.
Metal Max is an open, nonlinear RPG with a heavy focus on sidequests and tank tweaking. The main game has you chasing bounty heads and finding new vehicles for your entourage, but there’s so much other stuff to do! You can pimp your tanks with decals and accessories, you can buy furniture and wall hangings for your home, play with little critters that eat your money and grow to enormous proportions, or enjoy a host of minigames. Go hunting for this week’s target and become a rich and famous bounty hunter!

TOLL- If you've got the mechanic (whose name is randomly picked from about thirty, I should add) then you've reached Pobre Obre. There's a rental office on the eastern edge of town; you can rent him a tank until you find another one. Only downside is that they take 55% of your combat winnings in rental fees.
Further, you can rearrange the control configuration to your liking by pressing the Start button. You can even set the shoulder buttons as "Button Extension" - in other words, hold R and press A/B/X/Y for further functions. I have X as my Talk button, and R+X as my Check button. Similarly, while Y is a shortcut to the Ride function, I've got R+Y to automatically toggle riding for anyone who's standing on a tank. _________________

Is this a precursor to Metal Saga?
Just wanted to know cause I have that game and I haven't played it yet, either. |

Gideon, your work is a service to us all. Maybe this will compel me to buy Metal Saga despite the amazingly generic boxart. _________________

I own Metal Saga too! And I haven't played it much at all. All I know is that I started up the game and I said I wanted to be a mechanic instead of a hunter and I got a game over! That was pretty fucking rad. |

I'm pretty sure Metal Saga is something of a remake of this game (or one of its sequels). _________________

He was pretty easy to find. I just ran around on foot in the swamp until he showed up (took maybe five battles?), then tossed the grenade I had at him and had my mechanic shoot. Dead in a turn! _________________

| I always found him in the south, but I think it was more superstition than anything... Sometimes they take their sweet time showing up, there's one near the middle that's rather famous for it. Now I think of it, I think that's why I got bored of Metal Saga. ;) |

My god it's oldschool. Nothing is context sensitive, and the battles require you press A about fifty times each turn. Also the items have no descriptions so you can only figure out what they do by trial and error.
That said, I'm loving it so far! I love the map, the baddies are way cool, and the translation is very nice, so thanks guys for putting the time into it!
I just wish I could carry more stuff. I don't want to get that rich kid, but I think I'll have to for the extra backpack. |

Glad you're loving it :D I'm with you on the item woes... my second-to-last playthrough was just with the Hunter, and while it feels appropriately hardcore, the inventory is a pain...
You can see item descriptions from the BS-Con, by the way. Load it up and select "Items." |

Guys this doesn't seem to work on my SNES flashcart. I'm a sad panda. :(
Edit: Seems like I had to flick the 60hz switch on my PAL snes or it wouldn't get past the intro screen. |

| The weekly targets are tied to the Hunter’s level. It changes after he gains a level and at least one of the target monsters has been killed. |

| There's a car wash in Santa Poco that you have to run through to get rid of bird crap and lead mushrooms. |

| Yeah, sorry, it's a town that comes later on in the game. Until then you just have to bear the extra weight, sadly.... |

You can also see the titles from the status screens for each character.
... I mention this because I didn't realize that until I started playing with the first English patch, and all the time I had been translating the Japanese epithets for the soldier / mechanic, I was so disappointed that no one would ever see them unless they killed off the hunter and saved their game. ;) |

Can anyone link a working rom? I can't seem to get any to work. The closest I got froze at the file select screen when starting a new game. _________________

| I couldn't find a headerless rom, so I just opened up the rom with a hex editor and deleted the part at the beginning that was mostly zeroes. Turns out that was indeed the header. |
