I'm pretty sure Metal Saga is something of a remake of this game (or one of its sequels).

He was pretty easy to find. I just ran around on foot in the swamp until he showed up (took maybe five battles?), then tossed the grenade I had at him and had my mechanic shoot. Dead in a turn!
