I'm graduating soon .. and I have a lot to learn about marketing myself. I'll get myself a website soon, I already have business cards, and I have interned at places.
I'm trying to get a job in the graphic design or web sector, and I was just wondering if any of you guys had interview tips or the like.
I've done quite a few internships, I think I want to work in NYC or LA, but I'm scared of the rent among other things. _________________

| if you must live in NYC or LA, convince yourself you can maintain a stable income for awhile by trying to make sense out of people's A/V equipment hookups, and then - even though this won't work at all - this mentality will somehow extend to your supporting yourself decently well. |

Craigslist in the Vegas area was existentially disappointing whenever I tried to find a good thing through it. But also my standards are weird, so I guess that's that. _________________

Also, in the job interview dont ramble on just answer the questions in a couple of sentences. People tend to throw good attributes on blank slates rather than bad ones.
Never ever say you hate something (games, designers, programming languages whatever) If you dont like something give reasons but also come up with positive things about it as well.
I get to sit in on a lot of job interviews and the people that ramble on and on and the people that hate on the weather/music/movies/etc.. that get brought up dont get invited back very often.
Probably one of the most important things you can do is follow up to every phone call or e-mail as soon as humanly possible. It sounds obvious but you would be suprised with how many people think a full week is plenty fast. Most companies really dont have the time to hound people until they get a resopnse.
About a web gallery showing your work:

| Yeah actually this Friday I have a full-day interview with a major Silicon Valley company. I'm pretty stressed out about it, it's nothing like the interviews I've had in the past. I think it'll come down more to the substance of how I solve all the puzzles on the spot than if I look like a nice guy. |

A friend of mine got a job with a colo/webhosting company in Seattle, and he said during the interview, they asked "how a toilet works."
What the hell, man.
When I interviewed for the job I have now, we were talking about Gears of War during the interview.
Good luck, by the way. These things are usually easier than you think they're going to be.

Yeah, not to sound like a broken record, but what everyone says is true; make contacts. The vast majority of jobs in the vast majority of fields are got because someone knew someone or someone reccomended someone. Not in an unfair, sinister, "you need the right connections" kind of way. Just that that's the way positions get filled. Most jobs (or at least jobs where you make any money) just don't have the time or inclinations to post on help-wanted style avenues. Its a lengthy, sometimes costly process that doesn't always pan out.
Its strange because its getting to the point that the school you went to almost doesn't matter anymore. College enrollment in the US has skyrocketed as has the number of various institutions you can go to. There's so many now that no one knows which schools are good or bad. Really the most you can tell is if its a community college (lol) or not. The sole exceptions being top-tier ivy league places that everyone has heard of (Harvard) or shitty schools that have highly visable foot-ball teams (Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio, etc). Not really related, just an aside.
Also, I'd like to disagree with the craiglist reccomendation. I'm not in a technical field, and perhaps where I live just sucks, but I've applied to dozens and dozens of jobs over the years on craigslist and have never had anything really pan out.
So yeah Kap, it sounds kinda like you're doing what you need to be doing. Good luck! And good luck to you too Broco! I hope you do well on Friday when you go to see the Riddler or whoever to solve his puzzles! _________________

do volunteer work regularly and let your fellow volunteers know you are looking for a job. You are getting solid experience that you can put on your resume at a place that won't turn anyone away, and you'll be making contacts. _________________

In regards to Craigslist suggestions:
A couple of months ago, after deciding to move on from my current job, I sent my resume through the first ad I found on Craigslist. Like, it was literally the first ad I stumbled on and thought "hey, well, I'm interested in this!"
I am starting this job at the end of the month. _________________
