Ok, that was magnificent. The music, the level, everything.

Also, some of the most impressive R-Typing I've ever seen.

I that even possible in the arcade version? I just did a run to that stage and crashed when I tried backing into that post.

I don't remember seeing, doing, or hearing of such a thing in the arcade version.

Yeah, I guess reading the complete first post helps. Though, it was a good run! Got there on a single life. I'll have to try the SMS version, I guess.

Complete has a damn fine weird ass soundtrack. You should all check it out if you get the chance.

I do, thanks alot mate!

Wow, that vids are awesome. I didn't know that there was a complete-edition let alone that they added some plot-vids. The r-typers-ps-cds do not feature those vids, do they?

Min 2.06 - anyone remembering the first mid-boss you encountered? The animated robot (called Gains, if I remember correctly) resembles that midboss-robot that was lost to the BYDO.

And wha- the R-9 needs two pilots?

Seems like I need to track down the r-typers cd as well and look what's on there ... it seems that the R-TYPE DELTA intro-vid refers to some vids that should have a connection to r-typers?

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up!

R-Type Complete was a PCEngine CD ROM because they didn't know how to fit R-Type onto one HuCard when they first started the format (US release has all of R-Type on one card). It's the first game with cutscenes and a badass remixed soundtrack. If you can't find an ISO of it in a day or two shoot me a PM. I should have it back on my pc ready for uploading by then.

anyways neat find! I never even knew R-Type Complete existed.
such an engrossing backstory, it's always nice to see other people appreciate it (instead of the usual 'dur stories in shmups are stoopid').

They just released R-Type Dimensions on PS3 the other day, and I tried it out. I was kind of underwhelmed, though I liked a few things about it (such as the slow-motion feature, since the arcade game is pretty unfair in places; and how you can switch graphics modes any time). Apparently, this was released earlier on XBOX, but I don't have one.

I found the new graphics and music pretty uninspired, generally. They really cut corners in places. It's not just that I prefer the original aesthetic (though that's definitely the case), but the 3D mode is often ugly and far less detailed. Some things look nice, I guess, but there wasn't the consistency you find in Delta and Final, which show that an R-Type game can look good in 3D. (I actually refused to try Delta for years because I thought that 3D R-Type was a terrible idea, but I ended up liking it a lot in the end.)

The music reminds me how glad I am that early consoles had technical limitations that didn't allow video games to have electric guitar-based soundtracks. I wouldn't mind some quality modern-sounding arrangements of the music in the original R-Type, as I think it's just plain good music, but these aren't them. (I do like the unusual R-Type Complete music mentioned earlier in this thread.)

I don't mind having a convenient copy of the arcade games, so this works in that regard. But I ran into a number of bugs that were not in the original arcade games.

What I'd really like to see is a version that flips between Sega Master System, Turbo Grafx (with the Complete music as an option), and arcade.

Thanks for the impressions. I guess I'll stick to R-Types PS1 and not re buy these games unless I get the jones for some co-op R-Type. Is there any evidence that purchasing Dimensions will help Irem in any way? I'd buy it for that alone.

I forgot about the two-player option. That might be worth a try one day.

I know what you mean about wanting to support Irem. I'd agree to buy Steambot Chronicles 2 and Disaster Report 4 at full price for several friends if it would help somehow.

Don't hold your breath, Irem is gone - or rather the key staff members that made those games that you/i/we regard as irem games. It's a shame, but I doubt that granzella (studio of ex irem team lead kazuma kujo) could make or release a game like Steambot 2 or Disaster Report 4.

And I still feel like we should consider a R-TYPE FINAL podcast (or an Irem-cast in general) this year, since it already have been 10 years since FINALs release …
