I got an off shelf pc, anyone know how to put my old hard disk in so I can get all my old data back. It's full of good things I don't want to lose, but my prior attempt had no luck.

Pic of the case please? Some of them just have two thumbscrews on the back, then the side panel slides off.

for some reason I didn't even read it closely. I assumed you were talking about a laptop. Replacing a drive in a desktop is easy peasy, there's a flat (usually grey) cable going to the drive, and a power cable with a white cap.

(note, might be a red data cable if you have SATA)

just plug and play.

Yeah, I was wondering if HP had some sort of lockout thing since I've heard of being unable to instal XP on their machines and I couldn't get the machine to startup with my old drive installed.

you may need to fuck with the boot order in the BIOS/point it at the right start up disc.

also there are external usb hard drive enclosures as a last resort

for that price you may as well spend $5-$10 more and get a metal gear box II.
