I had to post this. It speaks for itself.

This is from Spoilerium, apparently.
Also apparently via This is Game.

I would not be able to go back and get letters from my dead mother in Animal Crossing. I would never play the game again.

I can't help but think that this person was somehow tricked, even though I want to believe those presents are from the real mom.

You realise this is a joke, yes? My understanding is there's a "Mum" character in the game that sends you presents anyway.

Oh yes, I read this about a week ago, at a time when I was particularly stressed out, and I almost began crying amongst my fellow classmates in a computer lab.

I went home and cried instead.

Yeah, your character's mom (as made up by the computer, even if your real mom doesn't play) sends you stuff on your birthday and such, though not a ton of stuff and not that often, so I would actually bet it is a combination of real mom/AC simulated mom. Still doesn't take away from the effect it had on this particular person.

Same here. We don't know if the mom had a different name in the game other than Mom. It might have been "Linda" or something like that, and they were all signed Love, Mom.

I saw this not in comic form, but in one of the saddest YTMNDs I've ever seen: http://animalcrossingtragedy.ytmnd.com/

And yes, I teared up as well.

And who says gaming can't have an emotional impact on the scale of novels and films?

Sure, it's a unique application of the game, but still... Heartrending.

But if this was some sort of sick joke, or excuse for publicity...

I think its interesting that a mother who is bound to a wheel chair and cant do things like cook or do laundry* or what ever finds a way to continue to give to her off spring via little digital presents.

*I am in no way saying that all a mom can do is typical house wife stuff, thats just how MY momma expresses her feelings twords her kids.

I'm pretty sure you get presents from your mom only in the DS version...

either way that's a hell of a story.

You get them in the Gamecube version too. On birthdays or special occasions and such.

Man, I almost cried when I first read that. I saw it on /v/ for the first time a few weeks ago. They said it was originally based on some thread on IGN.com about depressing game memories?

The computer-generated Mom came across as a bit of a flake, though, and most of her letters gave the impression that she had some sort of mental disorder. Just a bunch of really random stuff.

Anyway, this was just as touching as that story about the guy that played his dead friend's copy of Illusion of Gaia.

This is kind of creepy. Why didn't he ever check out the game again since his mom liked it so much? If my mom was playing Everquest 1, I'd roll an ogre warrior and play with her, especially if she had something terminal/debilitating.

Hey guys, on the subject of Animal Crossing, I've got a little story that will either cheer you up or creep you out. Either way it's a good read:

That SA thread shows something interesting. The game will take the role of the player's mother and send presents to the player. I'm afraid there may have been a giant mis-understanding here.

That SA thread is classic. Nook is a fucking bastard, and he can rot in hell for the dominion he holds over the town. I do love the style of the SA thread, it seems the perfect way to tell the story for people who have seen AC before and can understand the horror of Nook.

I really enjoyed it. I'm awaiting the riveting conclusion.

It's kind of funny, there's a guy in that forum who actually decided to pay the 10 dollars and join SA just from reading that topic.
Some fans of the topic are actually going to make an audio book out of the story.

the conclusion's up! gasp!

for those who never played Animal Crossing, it's pretty easy to tell apart the randomly generated nonsense the in-game mom sends. and if you've never played it with a family member, they will send you letters all the time.
