From the MSDN FAQ about the new video features in the Xbox 360 Fall 2007 Update:
12. What size USB storage device does the Xbox 360 support?
The Xbox 360 will support as big of a storage device as you can format using FAT32. Unfortunately when formatting a device in Windows Vista or Windows XP you will be restricted to a maximum FAT32 size of 32GB. You can work around this limitation by using a 3rd party utility or using an alternative Operating System that does not have this restriction. Please note that the maximum size of any single file on FAT32 is 4GB. |

FAT32 is much simpler and slightly faster than NTFS. The main advantages of NTFS are reliability features, security features and less "slack space" wastage, but all that is pretty much irrelevant on a game console (with a small number of very large files, and few writes). In general, the Xbox includes the strict minimum of Windows features, to keep things simple and leave control of the entire system's power to game developers. For instance, there is no multitasking and no automatic swapping of RAM to disk.
As for Windows not including the necessary features to properly interoperate with the Xbox... well, different departments inside Microsoft, etc. |

Which has probably been a saving grace for the 'box, frankly.
Now if only they could figure out how to not suck dong when selling the things to Japan. _________________

I actually love watching them try? It's like when SNK and NEC tried to market stuff here in the 90's. So backwards and wrong that it actually became endearing. _________________

It is fun to watch them try, in the same way that watching skateboarders fall down is pretty entertaining. _________________

While we're on the subject, the new update is pretty damn fantastic. I can now watch my ARRRRed videos of The Wire on the big screen. Don't think it will ever match up to XBMC (too many .avi videos have unsupported codecs still) but wow. _________________ Steam/PSN/Xbawks: GcDiaz

I downloaded a bunch of .avi hentai videos a while back, and now all of them play on my 360. It's awesome!
BTW, what (FREE!) third party programs allow you to format higher capacity drives as FAT32? I've been curious because if I ever do upgrade my PS2's HDD, I'm going to need such a program. |

It's funny that WinXP can't format drives bigger than 32 GB as FAT32, while Win98 and even WinME can. Hah.
So yeah, you could use an fdisk from one of those OSs. Or get Puppy Linux (Live CD) and use its GParted (I think that was the name) utility to format. It's really easy. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Can I use the WinME Emergency Startup Disk I was strongly encouraged to create every time I reinstalled it before I reformatted to NTFS and went with a clean XP install rather than a ME to XP upgrade? If I can do it without installing the OS, that would be sexcellent. I just don't know how I would get a laptop HDD to be seen by the disk. |

I think the WinME rescue disk is likely to work yes, though I've never used it personally.
I know for a fact though that, as Benoit says, virtually any Linux live-CD would do the trick and you wouldn't need to install anything. |

go to www.bootdisk.com to get previous windows versions of DOS to use for fdisking.
man, so as a PS3 owner and not having a 360 yet, I am totally feeling left in Microsoft's dust on this one. SONY really took their eye off the ball.
just like two weeks ago all the headlines were "PS3 to have DIVX support for sure, 360 maaaaaaybe.....uncomfirmed"
and now bam, 360 has it and I'm still waiting on SONY.

If you're considering using a Windows rescue CD of any kind just to format a disk, and feel competent in doing so, then you can handle booting a Linux Live CD, with a full GUI, to do the same thing (and then some). |
