I've never bought a bed before.
Tonight, however, I will walk into MUJI, the world's premiere home furnishings retailer (fuck IKEA), and spend a minimum of $800 on an oak bed.
I've measured my apartment and determined that, though I'll have plenty of room no matter how I situate the bed, it's geometrically improbable to have the headboard situated against the wall.
So what I'm going to end up doing is setting the bed so that one side of it sits against the wall (I will then sleep against the wall), which will leave me with a headboard standing against nothing.
Is this a feng shui faux pas? I just don't know. It doesn't feel right to me, no matter how otherwise earth-toney and harmonic my room will be.
I realized, walking back to the station (the apartment is a three-minute walk to the station, and a three-minute train ride from my new office), that perhaps I've been misunderstanding headboards my whole life. Why are headboards always situated against the wall? To keep us from touching the wall while we sleep? Or to merely present our imperfect souls with fleeting glimpses of symmetry?
For me, a headboard will have a function: it will keep my pillows from falling onto the floor.
It has been literally ten years since I've slept in a bed alone(, and too many weeks since I've had mildly violent sex in a bed).
My brothers, tell me your stories about headboards.
If my guilty feng shui is not assuaged in five hours, I will probably just buy this bed instead, which is still a really nice bed. (The legs are swappable, so I'll pay $10 extra to get legs that are 10cm longer.) _________________

That's a nice bed. The MUJI here does not sell beds, but does highlight the weak dollar. _________________ The people are like wool to me |

Hum, I guess you already bought the thing, but maybe it would have been a good idea to invest more in a large, thick, padded mattress filled with springs, straws and feathers. Or a futon ?
Also, no headboard, never. |

Actually, the photos on that website show the bed without its mattress! That's just the little mat that goes beneath the mattress. The actual mattress is epic. And orthopedic.
If you mean one of those Western sofabed abominations, forget it. If you mean a Japanese-style futon -- yeah, I've been sleeping on one of those for about a decade now. As my blood sugar gets weirder and I find myself using the toilet thrice an hour instead of the normal twice, I've come to appreciate the idea of being able to just slide out of the bed and be already standing. _________________

And here I was, thinking Muji was a faux-Japanese store (in the UK) that did nice pens (and comfy split-toe socks).
It is a lovely store though. |

| The head board for my new bed last year came about a week after I got the bed. And it came at 7:30 in the morning, so I had to sleep on the futon in the basement because I needed the sleep that morning while my mom let the guys in the house to install it. WTF? |

I've got a box-spring on my floor, with the mattress on top. No bed-frame, let alone a headboard. It's kind of like something between the full-out bed and a large futon, I guess? Anyway, I think I like it rather more than the full bed, which I'd probably have to crawl on to. This way I can just crash and pass out. _________________ o-/< --- o-\< --- o-|-| --- o^-< |

I've been sleeping on an "Western sofabed abominations" for the past six months now pretty comfortably. I don't like that I'm going to be moving back into my parents house for a month and sleeping on the bed I've had since I was 3. The mattress is a piece of shit, doesn't fit the frame which constantly I bump into getting in and out of bad so I have bruises all over my legs.
Still I look forward to MUJIing up my apartment come February. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

I have a king size bed, I'm sure many do. It's nice but when my girlfriend isn't staying round, or in the grand scheme of things when I'm single... I still stay on one side only. This should be strange but it's somehow more comfortable to have your own spot.
At least my bedroom is very much that. No more in there but a bed, wardrobe, bedside table, lamp and alarm. Oh how civilised! _________________

I havent had a headboard since I lived at home or in dorms, which never really struck me as odd until now. I guess I see a whole bed frame with a headboard and a footborad as an unessential piece of furniture. My bed is against a wall, and maybe once a month, I have to push it a little closer to the wall because it worked its way away from the wall. I guess I dont really see the need to spend a lot of money on something I wouldnt appreciate.
And its interesting what you said about staying on one side of the bed Greng, when I am sleeping in the bed when my wife is not there(which happens a lot since I work a wonky schedule), I only sleep on my side of the bed, it just feels right. |

I am so with you on this one, it makes me anxious when egress is only possible from one side of the bed. It can only be slightly alleviated by not having a head or footboard, so as you can exit from 3 sides of the bed and not just one. Even so, I hate it even more because when we did have our bed against the wall, my wife declared her side the one that was open for just this reason, so that was really not cool for me until we moved the bed again. |

My bed is in the corner of my room, so the headboard and side of the bed are against the wall
I actually don't have a headboard, it's just a box spring and mattress

i went in there to look at the beds and ended up saving money for 2 months so i could by a hooded sweatshirt
but yea muji is cool
definitely cooler than ikea

Headboards fucking suck!
They rub against the wall.
They bang against the wall when you're having sex.
They add no function other than letting you rest against them.
They fucking suck. _________________

Headboards should be pressed against a wall mainly because the back end of is usually ugly and made to be hidden by a wall. It's to present a big ornate front to whoever enters your room. The same thing with the foot board except at the other end of the bed.
My bed is from the (US) Civil War and my job is basically to humidify the room so it doesn't crack. _________________

i'm actually buying a new mattress soon. it's from one of many, many small chain retailers with generic names around here (hey, the mattress industry is extremely profitable!).
has anyone ever spent extensive time with one of those hyper-expensive tempur-pedic things? it looks like you'd have to pop yourself out in the morning. |

My bed is a high-quality Ikea bed. With a very expensive mattress and a down topper. Mostly, it was the certainty of finding-a-bed-that-day that made me go to Ikea. And the delivery options.
The bed is housed sweetly in my insane-asylum bedroom.
It has a headboard, I guess. It's part of the frame.
Truth is, the bed is never as important as the mattress. _________________ my website |

| Man who wastes money on frames that's just absurd. I'd rather take the money that I'd be spending on a frame and spend it instead on getting a better mattress. I slept on a $4k mattress once and it was like sleeping on heaven. Or sex. Or heaven sex. |
