|
|
I just finished the first hour of the first episode and it was a pretty great time. the show is pretty much exactly what I wanted and shows signs of turning into completely what I wanted. the matchups with the female contestants in the first episode (after a pinch hitter swapout) made for a pretty awesome episode.
so far the standout gladiators are Wolfman and Toa. the Female gladiators haven't done much to differentiate themselves yet, but they are all pretty hardcore. |

| this show is a pretty successfull approximation of something like ninja warrior combined with some hard hitting beef. its just the sort of "reality" game show that america has needed for awhile. |

thankfully a lot of the old events have returned. the show is remarkably unchanged. and what is changed or added is mostly for the better.

Well thank God.
I'd hate for a lack of foam beat-downs to ruin all those memories from my childhood. _________________

| it does seem like they are pretty blatantly writing some of the male contestants though. it could be they are just big dorks. |

that's the first episode. its a two hour chunk, probably for the debut. actually everything i've described was in the first two hour chunk, I haven't even started the second episode yet. |

They had that girl bleeding from her forehead on the first episode. I don't know if that's awesome or dreadful.
I never had the chance to see the original show, but this one kind of interests me. It's very much like that Ninja Warrior show, only Americanized (direct competition, weapons, general "toughness".) It's like the difference between watching speedruns and watching fighting game matches. |

In case you were wondering it is awesome. And not dreadful.

Fuck you. American Gladiators was on the air from 1989 - 1996. You should be comparing Ninja Warrior to that show, not the other way around. I missed the new show, but will catch record it next week. _________________ Still alive. |

I watched some of this!
Is the show writing the dialog of the male contestants? I just thought they were big dorks and hamming it a bit for the camera.
I just find the modern day Hogan endearing, his daughter too! I watched snippits of Hogan knows best as well. There was this excellent part, where Hogan was all 'respect brother' and the dork started crying, and Hogan was all 'that's awsome' and his daughter says "It's not awesome that he's crying.'. :D |

Too much backstory/dialogue from the contestants. It took me watching 3 hours worth of the show to realize that said dialogue/backstory was the "mystery factor" which was aggravating me.
My nostalgic memory of the show had them introducing the contestants as "This is Jim. He is a plumber from Albequerque. Let's do this!"
Other than that, I'm digging it. Helga might be the ultimate "plan b" girl if her legs got slightly cottage-cheesy when she wasn't flexing. |

Absolutely the weirdest thing I have ever seen on Television was Toa going ballistic with his wild Hawaiian dance or whatever the hell it was at the top of the foam pyramid before the event where you have to climb up a certain amount. Even the announcers and cameramen didn't seem to know what was going on, let alone the poor guy that was about to face him.

The Eliminator segment for the men on Monday's episode was brutal with respect to how Big Country kept failing to go up the travelator or whatever it's called. Despite the commanding lead throughout the show, $100,000 and a car went down the drain because he couldn't get up on his feet after grabbing the rope. It was almost heart breaking.
The asscheck exposure due to the other guy pulling on Militia's tights during the uh...gladiator toss event was pretty funny though. |

yeah, I mean, it should have been just like climbing up a tree to escape his dad with THE BELT.

| I highly encourage anyone who has only seen monday night's episode to torrent sunday night's two hour double dose. monday night is an example of when this new show will have an average episode because of comparatively lame contenders. both sets of contenders on sunday were much better. |

Wow, I laughed my ass off at this show, it's just so absurd. Sorry guys.
Wolf is fucking annoying with that constant howling.
And no Atlasphere? C'mon, nothing says gameshow, like contestants running around in giant hamster balls!
The red lady in the first episode on the eliminator was hysterical. She was just lying there getting raped by the treadmill for like 2 minutes.
And I really loved this:
Aside from jumping the whistle, it's exactly how the game/show should be played. |

| I just want to make sure its clear how awesomely rough the gladiators are with the contestants. especially in the game where you try to put balls in baskets, and The Pyramid. they seriously pancake people into walls, throw them away, body slam, the level of physicality is really pretty high. |

Haven't seen this yet :(
Still, one interesting thing I found was that as usual, paranoid internet peoples claim the show is rigged. Could be true, but the video I saw that tried to prove it mostly said things like "why can't they fall forward here?", and I think "well you know buddy, the travelator moves them down".
Love it when geeks who don't do much physical activity know they can comment on it experlty. |

so apparenlty UK Gladiators = WWF?
I'm suddenly overlooking any slight misgivings with the new american show's "talking" bits. |

Nah, UK Gladiators is basically the same as US Gladiators with a little more personality.

I meant that everything looked COMPLETELY staged. inlcluding the match. the US one overall does not feel staged. the pre and post match talking does seemed very coached, but the matches all seem honest. and I like that the gladiators have more of an image or persona and less of an actual vocal character. 'cuz you know, then they don't have to have tons of shitty dialogue. |
