I am getting paid in pounds now so hopefully I'll stop thinking that £220/week for a studio is ridiculously expensive, what the hell, I could rent a three-bedroom terrace in newtown for that (in AU$)

Ah, I see what you're saying.

I still do that.

Three years after moving.

Papaya in St. Anne's Court, off Wardour St...do a nice Thai curry (beef,chicken,veggie,red/green/cashew) with rice for £3.50..

Camisa & Sons on Old Compton St do decent priced sandwiches which they'll make for you on request. eg, Two ciabatta rolls with mozarella & salami for £2.50. Prices are a bit random, but great value.

If you like burritos, there's an awesome place called Mexi-Cali on Berwick St. The food is a bit pricier than you'd probably like - £5.50ish - but the burritos are very filling and tasty.

Man, this thread is awsome. All I need right now is more sugestions for housing, the cheapest place with central London access where I won't die, get mugged or contract a venereal disease :(.

All of the places I drink are mostly restaurants (Cafe Barney, etc.) -- the exceptions are Score (because I live next to it and know the staff) and The Morrissey, because it's actually a good bar. As far as clubs, Honey and Lick aren't awful, but the people who go to Honey are, and Lick is lesbians, so you know, it's good for that if you know lesbians. The Biltmore is getting good, I hear...

I dont know any of these places.

Take me out.

My life is a bit of a mess ATM but roger that when it's sane again.

The Morrissey is at Granville and Davie, though, so it's a good meeting place. My friends call it "the office" because of this.

I would have assumed it was mostly Pakistani food in London. Am I wrong? Bloody poms seem to be always 'paki' this, and 'paki' that... Is 'Indian' just used as a catch-all?

Brick lane is just a big tourist trap. Ridiculously high starting prices so they can give you a great sounding "discount" and the curry is generally pretty poor. Look out for curry houses in predominantly indian residential areas for the good stuff.

I've not heard the term "paki" for quite a long time. Are the poms you find in ozzy land generally racist?

In any case, I'd also avoid the brick lane curry houses. There're supposed to be a few good curry places down Whitechapel High St, which is just 5-10mins walk from brick lane. I'd still check out the drinking parts of that area though, if you like that sort of thing.

You can't go too wrong with the Kebabish Original (KO) franchises either.

i don't know; the cheap-as-shit curry i've had in london is about as good as the cheap-as-shit curry i eat in tokyo. meanwhile, the expensive-as-hell curry i've had in london is about as good as the expensive-as-hell curry i eat in tokyo.

in other words, i find it easy to imagine that india might just do indian food better.

Oh lord no, not there.

Then again, I've lived in America, so I'm biased when it comes to Mexican.

I find that good Indian curry regularly (in Tokyo at least, "Indian" is definitely a catch-all for currys Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi (to differentiate them from Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, et cetera)) can keep me from thinking about Mexican food. Until, that is, someone mentions Mexican food.

well, yeah, i said that!

i just like that the cheap-as-shit stuff in, say, manchester or leeds has a definite quality barometer to it, it's like a law unto itself.

but maybe i should move to tokyo.

or mumbai.

I've worked in the area for the past 3 years, the Burrito place has been there for about 2 years, though it did shut down and reopen. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular places to go to for lunch(still). Before it arrived I don't think there were any cheap/widely-known-about mexican food places... Yeah, we were stuck eating filthy, overpriced(but oh so convenient) Pret sandwiches, sometimes-radioactive Itsu sushi or stodgy vegetarian food. Don't get me started on the nasty chinese food.
Heh - having said that, it is amusing to see just how crap it is, so go to Wong Kei. Just once. Those guys pride themselves on bad service.

I've heard wonderous things about the curry in India. Also lots of bad near-death experiences with ice cream. LOL.
