I keep getting that message when I try to open a handful of files with very long names. (I'm trying to convert some .ogg files into .mp3 so I can burn them onto a music CD with the software I've got.) When I try to rename the files, WinXP won't let me. How the hell can I get these things working?

I've had similar problems in the past with some MS Word docs for work that used kana and kanji in the filenames, so I don't know if this is an issue with the length of the filenames or the characters used in the file names themselves.

Any ideas?

Copy the original file names to a txt file
GO into a command prompt
do something like...

ren 12*.ogg bob.ogg
to rename track 12

and so on?

Okay. I'll give this a shot.

I couldn't get DAIS's suggestion to work, but Predator Goose's did work out. I ultimately had to move the entire folder to my laptop's root in order for even the OS to recognize the filename....

dude you need to use shorter filenames

I didn't write the original file name! I'm very practical in this regard, if any.

Oh man was I right?

I hear that album's actually pretty good, you know.

Ha! No, no, I kid.

I grabbed some albums of Renaissance choral music written by Gilles Binchois and Guillaume Dufay. It's okay, but I prefer the instrumental music of the period moreso than the vocal.
