A team of academics known as Digital Urban are attempting to create a virtual copy of the City of London using the Crysis mod tools. They're importing individual building meshes from SketchUp, Google's free 3D application which integrates user-submitted 3D constructions with the Google Earth software.

It's pretty basic at the moment, but I'm impressed nonetheless.

Having no idea what your computer spec is, but knowing how punishing the Crytek 2 engine looks, it's probably safest to guess "no"..?

I know for certain my creaky old laptop would probably struggle just getting it installed -- never mind running the thing. So I'm certainly disappointed that I probably won't be able to see this project firsthand.

Still, it's fascinating to see people taking a serious scientific approach to making use of available videogame technology.

I was just being a cranky bitch.

Yes, it is pretty exciting. Then again, scientists are nerds and they've never been averse to insinuating their hobbies into their work. Remember that Second Life hypercube?

Oh yeah, that was fantastic I thought. Really clever stuff.

Hey, add this with the detailed physics engine of Crysis, YouTube and a pretty bored guy and we have the next "Terrorists use game to plot bombing attempts in Central London" headline.
