So, I have this credit card that doesn't really do anything for me. It's an Amazon card, and I don't think it gives me Reward One for using the goddamn thing. I have a debit card that's much more convenient, but when I graduated from college everyone started yelling at me to "establish credit," so I said, "what the fuck?"

That's fine and all, but I want a C.Card that will pat me on the back for using it. It's only fair--the interest rates rape you if you don't pay off your balance on time.

So basically, I want to know about the credit cards you fine guys and gals have. I'm going apply for the one that has the best rewards. Frequent flier miles are good, but I hear they take forever to build up.

Also -- feel free to use this thread to complain about massive credit card debts you have only outside odds of ever being able to pay off.

I've heard very bad things about Capital One cards for building credit; apparently no matter what your balance is, Capital One always reports that you're at your limit.

I have a Chase Mastercard. I suppose I'd recommend them? I don't know how they compare to other companies, but they haven't fucked me over yet, and they do stealth credit limit increases on your account whenever you're eligible.

After Christmas and a trip to the nation's capitol, have a unsightly, though not unmanageable [for now], little pile of personal debt on my "l'earn" visa.
It's nothing getting a job wouldn't fix. .....it's just I didn't think I'd have to do that until summer break. :\

Discover is supposed to have good rewards. bp has a ridiculous Visa if you gas up at bp stations a lot. I think it's something like 10% cashback on bp purchases, which is sick if you drive regularly. No idea about the interest rate though (I bet it kills).

Damn I wish there were BP's around here...but this is Mobil country.

Interest rates don't bother me much, cause I never buy anything I can't pay off before the ugly 20% hammer comes swinging down on my wallet.

I am going to check out Discover though--I'll let you know what the rewards are like.

I've got a Citi Dividend Platinum Select that I've had for a few years, and got with no credit history. I think I have some insane limit now, like $6k+. It's like 3% back on gas an groceries, and 1% on all other purchases. The interest rate is the standard one (17% or so).

I use their online stuff exclusively, and it's pretty convenient. I've only had to call their customer service once or maybe twice, and each time they were fast and actually helpful. They offer virtual credit card numbers, which can be handy for some things.

I've been happy with it, and would recommend it.

For the record, I got myself a Chase Platinum Visa meant for students back after I graduated from high school. I've got another one now. The newer one is still running strong with the introductory 0% APR, and the older one had 0% for like 18 months before switching over to a 10% APR, where it's been ever since. I have no idea where you people get 17% interest rates from. In my experience, as long as you never, ever miss a payment, they won't raise your rate outside small adjustments based on the market.

I had a Chase card. Don't get a Chase card. I spent a grand on it and only recieved 17 dollars in rewards. Don't get a Chase card. Just don't. They don't care about you.

I suggest a Citi card. I earn an insane amount of rewards for using it that can be applied to anything from travel to electronics to interest refunds. Granted, rewards are all a ploy to get you to spend money you could be saving. My APR is a bit steep, but unless you have a credit history of some sort it, and depending on your wages, it probably won't be below 13%. Citi cards also offer you multiple benefits like hiked security without having to pay for it (unlike Chase).

I would get one of those credit cards that offer higher travel benefits but their APRs tend to be insane and the reward to dollar ratio is not really worth it.

Also, as far as how 17% interest rates are concerned, credit card companies aren't going to give you an introductory interest rate of anything much lower unless you have established credit. Granted, my Chase card was 9% but the credit line was silly. My Citi card gives me a 9,000 dollar limit, but the interest rate is about 14%. I have spotless credit as well, but it is just due to my being a student and having low wages.

And stay away from cards that aren't Visas or Mastercards. Discover, American Express, etc, may not be accepted everywhere, and Visas and Mastercards are universal.

I've never had a credit card because my bank card is a Visa. Actually, about two years ago, I switched from swiping as debit to credit because of a rewards program thing. It's more of a pain to sign my name than to type 4 numbers, but what the hell. Last week I spontaneously checked my points balance and found out that I had enough to do a thing, so I spent 3/4 of it on $15 cash, which has just today appeared in my account.

So I made $15 by signing my name like once a day for two years.

Not sure if it was worth it.

Anyway my credit sucks and everytime I get a pre-approved junk mail credit card thing I notice that my limit is like $70. So I'll be watching this thread for education. Bye now.

I've had a $94 debt on my record since 2005, and paid it back last year. Though it still shows up on my credit report (currently in dispute). Because of that debt I can't get a credit card to start building credit with. Not even from a place like Target or Best Buy, where they're beggin to take your money.

I should have gotten a credit card in college. I could really use that credit right about now as I could really use a car. And I'm making enough money that its smarter to get a decently new car. Dagnabbit.

I got a Discover card! A while ago! Came with a free ipod shuffle.

It's a student card, so I don't pay interest on it for a year. I missed a payment a while ago because I couldn't find the card and they charged me out the butt with interest. After I made two regular payments they removed the interest and raised my limit.

I thought that was nice of them.

The entire business of credit rating is horrifying.

With my Chase card, I was sent an email whenever my statement was ready. I paid my card after such an email was sent but apparently my statement wasn't ready for the month, so they put the payment on the previous statement. Then they charged me a late fee because I paid a day early. I disputed it, they said okay cool you don't have to pay the late fee, but I ended up having to anyway. So yeah. I also had their sales department calling me every 5 seconds trying to sell me credit insurance, using scare tactics such as "well we are looking your credit report right here and there is some new 'activity'". Fuck that card, I canceled it. Citi Bank is really the only huge corporation that doesn't seem to have milking their customers for all they're worth in mind.

The basic setup for Amazon cards is that they give you 3 points for every dollar you spend on Amazon.com and 1 point for each dollar spent everywhere else. for every 1100 points or something, you get a $25 gift card.

if your amazon card is not like this, then I suggest you ask about getting it swtiched. maybe its an old one or something?

they also reel you in with an instant credit of $30.

I got an amazon card because I wasn't sure what to get in a credit card and knew i'd be doing a lot of online shopping since I live in Alaska. I trust amazon with my stuff, they've always been good if there was some troubles with shipment or with my account, and they have decent shipping prices to alaska. atleast $100 free dollars in the past year.
