I've had a $94 debt on my record since 2005, and paid it back last year. Though it still shows up on my credit report (currently in dispute). Because of that debt I can't get a credit card to start building credit with. Not even from a place like Target or Best Buy, where they're beggin to take your money.
I should have gotten a credit card in college. I could really use that credit right about now as I could really use a car. And I'm making enough money that its smarter to get a decently new car. Dagnabbit.
