| I've had Greg Wilson's mix for the Resident Advisor podcast on repeat all weekend. The "I've Been to the Mountaintop" section with the beat of Timmy Thomas's "Why Can't We Live Together" is so good. |

Listening to The Private Press again, I'm pretty sure I like it better than Endtroducing. I really take it as a collection of glorious sound; there's so much stuff dropped into the background that makes it simply huge. _________________

| The new Ohgr is much better than the second album, but still not as good as the incredible first album. It's more interesting, in a way, because it's quite different from his previous stuff. |

Luomo has released a new album on his label HUUME recording, called convivial.
It's lush enough to pierce holes in your dentition. It unfolds as a series of scenes in the fancy dark appartments of melancholic hipsters. It's dark and bright, rather bass heavy, just ever so slightly reminiscent of the _present lover_ sound with a wider range of vocal textures (thanks to various featured artists)
It manages to feel uplifting.. which almost feels like an accident.
Listening to it actually ended up in one. |

Attention Australians living in SYDNEY or MELBOURNE. You should totally go see QUA:
I saw him play last night in my city, and it was fucking awesome. Rocked my socks off, even though it's not really rock. More like, totally awesome music. Mountains in the Sky were also fantastic. They're both synth and percussion heavy, with a bit of guitar for good measure. Oh, and intstrumental. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I got to speak to Qua briefly after the show when I went to buy some MERCH, I think he was mostly being polite to me since he seemed to have lots of friends he wanted to talk to, but it was still cool. Check 'em out.
Oh yeah, the tour is to promote their latest albums. The new Qua is rad, it's a very different sound from his previous stuff... the first single is on his myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/quamusic
To be honest, that track is far from my favourite, but it should give you an idea of what to expect. And here is Moutains in the Sky, again the first single is up here:

I think I prefer Q&A, it fits my current mindset and is just a lot of fun to listen to. Red Silver is also a really nice album, but it's weaker than his first two, I feel. |

For the last few months my most listened record has been the Swedish death metal classic by Dismember, Like an Everflowing Stream.
The cover still reminds me of that waterfall stage in Ninja Gaiden II.

And then there was Witchtanic Hellucinations by Acid Witch, which came just in time for Halloween.
Good & groovy doom metal echoing kraut/psych weirdness of the '70s.
If you like the one above, have another. |

My dad took me to a lot of Richard Thompson concerts when I was younger. How that I'm older and can appreciate him a little more, I really want to see him again, but he's not coming anywhere near here anytime soon. _________________

This morning, a series of tunes entered into my ears, controlling my brain with their tendrils .. and it felt like my head was blown away.
This morning, Aleksi Eeben released: Space Age Cherokee
http://www.cncd.fi/aeeben/music/spaceagecherokee/ (for download)
http://www.cncd.fi/aeeben/music/ (music player)
It's a very focused, polished album, with extraordinary varied moods. Its music goes straight, curved, or floats, almost still. It has strong beats and hum-able melodies. The melodies here are simpler (yet not dumbed down) that what Aleksi Eeben used to produce, in what appears to be an intent to stream down the effect of his music. Emotions vary from sheer excitement to melancholy, firmness and focus. |

So apparently Marty Friedman, guitarist of Megadeth, is a pop sensation in Japan. I did not know this.
That is the video for his "Death Panda" character, with vocals by 40-some teenage girls, or something.

okay, I am like two months late on this but I've been without internet for about a month so
this is good to hear. i saw skinny puppy when they came around last but I'm out of the loop as far as ohgr. seeing ohgr was incidentally my first real concert! fantastic show.
i have to say, given skinny puppy's output in the initial run i think that they're better off trying to accomplish what they want accomplished with Ohgr anyway. they've honestly been able to nail the pop aspect pretty well in that project, and when it comes out in skinny puppy, well... new skinny puppy is kind of hit or miss. Sometimes I think it can't decide whether it wants to be eminently listenable or uncompromisingly unlistenable and then it makes a strange compromise in the middle. it suffers for that. _________________

Listen to his re-make/cover of Tornado of Souls to see how far he's fallen.
Just got a couple of Khanate albums.

Oh my god that is a tragedy. "Tornado of Souls" is a fucking classic thrash tune. Or it was...
Shit, it's been a few years since I put on Things Viral, but is it just me or does "Too Close Enough To Touch" sound a little bit different there? Interesting. Gonna have to put that album on again. I always preferred Khanate's eponymous record, so maybe I'm just not remembering it very clearly. I got so fed up being inundated with all the junk those Southern Lord guys started churning out and have kind of avoided them for a couple of years or so now (I think the last thing I actually bought was Altar), but those first two Khanate records were pretty fucking excellent.
I'll have to look into this, but are Khanate back together? Or is this upcoming release I've heard about just something old? _________________
