Nice upload 108. Have you managed to hear any of albums of The Birthday yet? I'm pretty interested since I'm a huge TMGE fan.

Oh fuck man, I've got them all.

I assume you're mega-down with ROSSO too, then? If not, you should definitely check them out too. (ROSSO was Chiba Yusuke's short-term super-band side project, which actually put out like, four amazing EPs.)

I can ummmm maybe upload the "BIRD" album, if you want :-3

if you're down with sambo master, here's a song that (guitar/vocal) takashi yamaguchi produced for japanese punk rock band tokyo algorithm. yamaguchi also plays lead guitar and sings two of the verses (he wrote those two verses as well)!

it's really really traditional japanese 21st-century punk rock though yeah it has some awesome guitar work -- yamaguchi's white-falcon-equipped solo is pretty awesome -- and yamaguchi's vocal style is actually weirdly different from how he usually sings. i like it a lot!

it's a clever little unoriginal song with some pop hooks though yeah, not quite 100% awesome

Welcome!

Did I post that link in here, or in another thread?

I think it was another thread. At any rate, yes: Rolling Stone Japan recently did a list of the top 100 Japanese rock albums of all time, and Happy End's "Kazemachi Roman" (zipped here) was #1. Which is cool as shit. It's one of the Japanese records my dad had, is how cool it is.

also - I totally forgot Sambomaster had a new album out. Snagging that torrent right now. And I think the title sort of roughly translates to: "Music's Children are All that Sing"?

uhhh

the title is a wordplay on the japanese title of the old jazz song "all god's children got rhythm", once used as the title for a short story collection by haruki murakami, and then mistranslated by jay rubin as "all god's children can dance".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7802TL1Eaf4

so the title, then, should be "all music's children got song".

this is the fourth (of four) sambo albums where the title has directly referenced another album or piece of music!

my official opinion is that the album is a HUGE step down from the third album, which was a fucking modern pop-rock masterpiece (track four is one of my favorite songs of all-time, as well as the third-most-listened to track in my iTunes, after the stone roses' "breaking into heaven" and nirvana's "lounge act" (the birthday's "alright" is number four, for some reason (probably a temporary thing)).

number five is thee michelle gun elephant's "THE BIRDMEN"

FUCK YES!!

though yeah, sambo's track fours have always been the best tracks on the albums, musically. and track four of album four, too, does not disappoint!

probably his best guitar solo ever, too!

the rest of the album is a bit of a blow, with some cringeworthy moments. however, album #3 was such a huge step up from album #2 that i'm not willing to write the man off for album #5.

he needs to really let loose and get dinosaur-jr-like with his guitar solos more often.

man, that's a hell of a solo.

in other news, the stone roses' "breaking into heaven", as far as my iTunes is concerned, is the best song of all-time, leading my #2 song by literally 62 listens.

what the shit!!

when did i find the time to listen to this song so much over the last two years?

(talking about the seven-minute, not eleven-minute version.)

the little riff after the solo, with the low guitar-slapping and the slides up to the fourteenth fret -- i think the first ten seconds of that are 100% responsible for my current guitar "playing" "technique", for better or for worse.

god, such a perfect song.

word on the street here in japan is that they suck because they don't have awesome hair and their songs never get featured in television dramas about a girl with cancer and the suicide-committing guy who loves her :''(

Ive been looking at videos of them, post concert, and Eye has a different guitar tree at the 77 Boardrum thing back in July.

That version looks more like a bunch of individual guitars. The one he had last night, was ONE guitar with seven necks/head stocks.

yeah! i believe i've seen this one. it looks more like a noise-rock-freakout instrument that just happens to contain guitar components, whereas the G2 guitar tree definitely nails the visual aspect.

i hope they release that dvd because apparently they just hate playing in japan :-/

so my favoritest band ZAZEN BOYS have just finished up recording an album with dave fridmann, producer of the FLAMING LIPS, which is kind of a surprise, and kind of not a surprise.

the album will be called ZAZEN BOYS IV and will probably be the Hottest Thing on Earth for a full six months upon its release.

this is an excerpt from a show they played in fredonia two weeks ago, while recording the album:

This is pretty interesting, and I think sheds a lot of light on why Smile turned out the way it did.

Oh god, yeah. It all makes a decent amount of sense now.

FYI: The song "Flower Sun and Run" by Pyg was also the inspiration for the videogame (of the same name) by Grasshopper Manufacture.

I really liked -- and continue to like -- "Smile" because it reminds me of some of my favorite Japanese 70s prog-cheese bands, like Yonin Bayashi.

(warning: videos depict a 70s band post-70s)

one of my favorite hot tracks:

really good sex music :-/

i did wonder.

also super fire pro wrestling special's scenario mode is an allegorical retelling of the life and death of kurt cobain

and this, kinda, is NO MORE HEROES, while we're on the subject

oh shit, someone put this back up on youtube! it got taken down like two years ago:

oh man i've wanted one of those for-fucking-ever. you can play guitar along to your favorite records!

my friend has one and she won't give it to me. i used it once to add some really vicious fuzzed out shit to a THE JAM record. it sounded so awful it was awesome.

seriously, i think My Balls Might Not Exist Anymore after how hard i was just rocked.

i've seen them play this song live like eight times now, and the studio version here just makes so much sense.

album comes out next week! i will own it with great vigor.

protip: live, the guitar solo is about fifteen minutes long.

i was actually this close to buying an aqua pair of ray-bans the other day.

futoshi abe, lead guitarist of legendary now-defunct japanese rock band THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT, died of a brain hemorrhage on wednesday. he was 43 years old, and, prior to dying, had done this

afrirampo found a slightly better tin can to record in <3 <3 <3

they've been playing this song, and many similarly themed songs, live for about two years now, and have finally recorded an album with all those songs. it will be out on may 21st and probably be the best thing they ever make (judging by how closely this song resembles their live experience compared to their other stuff (i have seen them live like forty times in the past five years okay i am an expert (lol))).

BONUS me trivia: i was at the show used for the live footage in part one (you can't see me in the vid tho)

yeah, i know those kids!

if you like them you might also maybe like my friends' band PRAHA DEPART. not exactly the same thing, though coming from a similar place.

i wish some of their newer songs were on youtube. i could upload a video i took at one of their shows a couple of weeks ago. maybe i will.
