Yes, I know they don't count. |
Huh? Why wouldn't they count? I believe he asked for drone, not just drone metal.
If you get into Nadja, listen to The Angelic Process. These bands aren't pure drone so much as they are Godflesh/shoegaze/guitar noise (Fennesz, etc.)-influenced drum machine metal. Some people call it "metalgaze", which I think is kind of dumb (I always preferred my own "doomgaze" term, even though that's kinda silly too). Anyway, if you're asking me, The Angelic Process are/were the best band of this variety. _________________

Tremble is pretty nice. I would say also grab Touched 2007 and Radiance of Shadows.
Just grab anything by The Angelic Process, it's all excellent. I have their last LP in the album dump thread.
Swans are any number of things, of course. Drone is just one of them. _________________

Anyone happen to have some 新宿ゲバルト (Shinjuku Gewalt) or know where to get some?
I'm kind of curious, mostly because of this picture.

Teitanblood — Seven Chalices (Spanish oldschool raw occult black/death metal miasma.)
Katharsis — Fourth Reich (German orthodox Satanic black metal.)
Arckanum — ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ (Swedish anticosmic/chaos-gnostic black metal.)

Dreams of the Drowned — Thanatotropic Principle (French black/crust experiment.)
Yoga — Megafauna (Drone, ambient, experimental, black metal.)
Mono — Hymn to the Immortal Wind (Post-rock.)
Portal — Swarth (Surreal death metal, dissonance worship.)
Ulcerate — Everything is Fire (Atmospheric brutal/technical death metal.)

Stabat Mater — Stabat Mater (Bleak funeral doom metal.)
The Ruins of Beverast — Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite (Black/doom metal.)
Drudkh — Microcosmos (Ukrainian heathen metal.)
Miserere Luminis — Miserere Luminis (Canadian depressive black metal.)
Amesoeurs — Amesoeurs (French coldwave/post-punk/black metal.)
Urfaust — Einsiedler EP (Dutch post-black metal.)
Funebrarum — The Sleep of Morbid Dreams (Monstrous death/grindcore.)
Martyrdöd — Sekt (Crustcore/d-beat with black metal influences.)
Arktau Eos — Ai Ma Ra (Ritual ambient.)
Rome — Flowers from Exile (Neofolk.)
Current 93 — Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain (Apocalyptic folk, though this record actually has a sort of doom metal vibe.)

Karjalan Sissit — Fucking Whore Society (Martial industrial.)

Skagos — Ást (Cascadian black metal.)
Njiqahdda — Taegnuub - Ishnji Angma (Ambient/black metal.)
Korouva — Sleepwalker (Russian dark ambient/folk/blues.)
Excuse the descriptions if you find them cheesy, those were just there for someone else who asked for recs and this is a copypaste.
Should also mention Snow Lark on the Temple Mt. Doom, whose album was leaked onto the internet last year, but only discovered this year by a friend while perusing the artists' photography collections online. It's a really lovely French drone/ambient/psyche/folk project. They still only have a bit over 100 listeners on last.fm, and deserve much more attention.

I honestly don't know how I haven't heard of this Æthenor project -- at least via Current 93 (I'm not so interested in the Southern Lord scene these days). This is very nice, and yes, Tibet's voice sounds perfect here. This is a lot more attractive to me than recent Sunn O))) releases...
You know, I should probably hear Eater of Birds, because I have heard similar statements before, but have remained hesitant because Gin just sounds like Tool playing "black metal" to me. Can't really get into it.
Of the albums I listed above, by the way, I would think you might appreciate the Yoga and Aderlating.
Have you heard much Rome?
Also curious about what you'd think of Deathspell Omega. Particularly an offering like Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum. To me, for the last few years, there has been Deathspell Omega and everything else. _________________

A sort of "classic" in the realm of more experimental metal, Abruptum are a band known for their improvised black metal style on albums like Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectére Me and Evil Genius. (Later on they did away with the metal for more simple dark ambient.) I honestly don't believe their intention was to do anything clever or "avant-garde" or whatever, they just wanted to sound as evil as possible -- to create (as the late Euronymous of Mayhem put it) the "audio essence of pure black evil." Apparently the original pressing of Evil Genius came with a razor and a note instructing those who couldn't understand their music to use it. Naturally, they're one of the most misunderstood bands among metalheads.
There was actually an issue of Wire years back where Stephen O'Malley talked about them in an interview, and they were probably as much inspiration to Sunn O))) later on as Earth. There's nothing all that complicated or nuanced about it though, it's just sick, murky, plodding metal noise. Their vocalist was also supposedly a dwarf named It.
Abruptum has probably been some influence on more current "black noise" bands like Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating, etc. Most of those implement some degree of improv.
Gorguts' Obscura is pretty much revered as the first death metal album to successfully approach the genre with free jazz techniques, and remains completely unique. Actually, when DsO's Fas came out lots of people were calling it "the Obscura of black metal" ... which honestly isn't quite accurate, but both have reputations as "difficult" metal albums utilizing dissonance and atypical rhythms. You might find it worth checking out.
Oh -- did you happen to listen to the S.V.E.S.T. flipside of their split with DsO? (The one with "Chaining the Katechon".) It's not 'free', but it has a very hectic no-wave/kraut-inspired sound that brings to mind that whole cliché about backmasked '70s rock records spewing Satanic noise. This is, to me, an amazing thing. _________________

Exploding Head by A Place to Bury Strangers would be a late addition to my favorite records of 2009.
Check them out if you're into shoegaze, psyche rock, noise pop, etc.
Dracko, you might be particularly interested since they opened for NIN in 2008. _________________

Lol, shit. Okay, so Ben Frost's latest album contains three tracks titled like so:
"Through the Glass of the Roof"
"Through the Roof of Your Mouth"
"Through the Mouth of Your Eye"
... And I knew that seemed a familiarly peculiar arrangement of words, but couldn't put my finger on just how.
Tonight, listening to The Cure's Disintegration, along it came:
"Dropping through sky
Through the glass of the roof
Through the roof of your mouth
Through the mouth of your eye
Through the eye of the needle
It's easier for me to get closer to heaven
Than ever feel whole again." _________________

By the way, Dracko, what do you think of Gira's I am Not Insane?
Really cannot wait to hear how he'll bring these songs or this sound into the Swans setup. _________________

I'm having trouble uploading anything to mediafire without it failing right now otherwise this would be in the album dump thread, but MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS are one of the most refreshing bands I've heard in some time... They're post-hardcore, a bit similar to Number Girl, and the sort of thing I can imagine a certain mr. tim rogers would enjoy quite a bit (and probably already does).

I'm wondering if this rumored upcoming album from Boris will actually see the light of day. And I mean a proper album, too, not this revamped collection of older songs they're supposedly putting out... I read something not too long ago about how Atsuo has been talking in interviews about how he's been contemplating his place in the world as a Japanese man in such a Western-influenced band -- saying things like "we're hardly a band anymore" and that Boris is basically just a vehicle for him to travel the world and have new experiences at this point. I'm not certain about the veracity of these statements, but it sort of makes sense coming after a series of 7" singles that indulge in their tastes in visual kei and such, with a dose of irony or self-denigration (i.e., lol avant garde drone metal band secretly loves X Japan). _________________

Anyone thoughts on Lady Gaga here? Does anyone care?
I've only just started paying any attention at all, really. The video for "Bad Romance" seems to me like there's some kind of Kubrick influence...
Reminds me of Eyes Wide Shut, kind of... I think I like her videos. I don't hate the music, either.

I mean I guess it's cool that she does, but I'm not sure I'd care either way.
Some of her songs are pretty good, but I think it's her visual side that I find more interesting. Sexy as hell, actually.
This review of The Fame Monster sums up what I like about her pretty well, actually:

She seems to play the part of Lady Gaga quite comfortably, and if you look up some of her old music as Stefani whatshername you may get the impression that this was a metamorphosis she was bound for. Either way, the persona of Lady Gaga is apparently somewhat conceptual -- though I'm not sure to what extent she's "commenting" on fame, rather than simply fetishizing it to an almost surreal degree -- which fascinates me a bit.
I'm reminded of The Angels of Light song "Michael's White Hands," which was supposedly an actual comment on celebrity -- specifically, Michael Jackson and the perception of him as an adrogynous nymph and a materialization of glamour -- and how these people are really just archetypal manifestations of collective dreams or decadent desires or whatever. Of course, not without some patently apocalyptic overtones...

I haven't really paid any attention to Jesu since Conqueror.
If he could ever get back to making things like Heart Ache (or, uh, Streetcleaner, though not likely) I'd be interested again.
His "electronica" stuff really bores me. _________________

I haven't. Will look them up.
What did you make of Greymachine? I think it's not quite on par with earlier Godflesh, though it really isn't bad.
Oh and by the way, here's the first review of the new Swans album.
By all appearances it seems to be real, and has me quite excited! _________________

I discovered Godflesh through the soundtrack to the awful Dean Koontz adaptation Hideaway, starring Jeff Goldblum and Christina Applegate. It was a terrible, terrible movie, but its soundtrack actually had some pretty cool stuff on it, including "Nihil" by Godflesh, which I think remains one of their best tracks.
Of course, past my teens I've preferred Swans, though it didn't start out that way. I imagine that's a transition typical of many. Actually, I find it sort of weird that both bands are co-headlining an upcoming music festival... _________________

Ben Frost was really great! Much heavier use of guitar than I was expecting at moments.
Baby Dee was really... cute? Sort of like David Tibet meets Joanna Newsom.
Swans were fucking incredible. I almost burst into tears from the total power of "No Words/No Thoughts." They were absolutely crushing and majestic.
I get to see them again tonight. _________________

If you enjoy drum n' bass, this is some pretty good stuff. I only dabble in it occasionally these days -- used to listen to tons of it and go to shows (parties, raves, whatever) and stuff years ago -- but it's nice when something like this comes along. _________________
