I looked into Om at some point. Not sure which album though, I was not super blown away. I think it was "Variations on a theme", the cover art looks familiar. But I have heard that a few of their albums are weak, including the one I think I heard.

High on Fire has the rest of Sleep correct? Or the one other member. They are pretty cool, but a very different creature. Different in the Stoner Metal genre(s) I suppose.

Whatever the track that was first playing when I went into Puscifer was awful. Just really lame stuff. The websites design is pretty lame too.

But I was sort of expecting that. Ive never been a fan of Maynard outside of tool. His humor has always been pretty annoying, like that Bikini Bandits or whatever that crap he did for that Perfect Circle DVD. Terrible.

Oh and that "Circle - Katapult", is pretty awesome. These guys seem to have a interesting library of music.

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotten Vegetables

Guitar Hero III works for promotion! So far "Holiday in Cambodia" is one of my favorite GHIII songs, so I got their first album. This is a pretty great punk (hardcore) album. I guess I don't know a whole lot about "Hardcore Punk" but I did not think it sounded like this, this reminds me more of some sort of Avant outfit, with surf rock influences. I really like Jello Biafras voice, the whole warbeling deal. Reminds me of Bryan Ferry from Roxy Music. The lyrics are all sorts of 80's left wing politics, but thats not surprising. But there is enough sarcasam to get beyond the tried and true punk politico stance. But I suppose this was from 1980 so it had yet to been beating a dead horse.

Altogether I give it a: "I LIKE IT!"

I got a postcard for this band when I bought Sunn's Oracle Vinyl, so I checked the album out. Its pretty good. I really love it when bands (especially metal) incorporate nature sounds withing the music. Like the thunder storm that rolls in on one of the tracks. Ive only given it one full listen, but I have been waiting for a good cold evening to go for a walk and listen to it again.

I bought this Southern Lord records 7" split from the bands Scurshahor and Striborg at a record store the other day, and at the time I did not know who the bands were. I just bought it because it was a Southern Lord 7" split. The guy at the counter was trying to figure out the name so he could write it down in their books, and just sort of a came up with a name for them since it was illegible.

Here are the covers for the split:

Wow, that cover art is amazing! I am trying my hardest to find this album. Here is a quote about the un-amazing sounding album:

"Ancient Curse - "The Landing"
(WMMS 140,1997, CD)

The strains of an acoustic guitar, a soft vocal, then comes the barrage. If I was to contain this review to only word, it would be: Metallica. Ancient Curse do not appear to make any claim's at "prog-metal", this is straight metal. Straight from the Metallica songbook. You get deep throated growly vocals, rapid machine gun guitar riffs, ballistic drumming. Yes it's all here, even a few slow numbers. It is far more "proggy" I suppose than Metallica will ever be, with the 15 minute "Reborn in Fantasy" and it's Unicorn fantasy lyrics. The singer Peter Pietrzinski is not quite the harsh wailer of metal standards, but his guitar playing is. Suffice it to say, if you like metal riffery and just can't get enough of that Metallica sound, Ancient Curse should fit the bill nicely. - Dane Carlson"

Is there a good website for Music release dates? Just like a massive list for each day? Stuff that includes things beyond American Idol and Hip Hop albums.

Do you check out Brainwashed? The New Releases section should provide you with the sort of information you're looking for.

I got the new Einstürzende Neubauten this morning. Impressions to follow.

Thank you, thats exactly what I was looking for.

Hmm, actually maybe not. This only seems to cover the week of, nothing for the future.

Which album? I hope it was Drums not Dead. There other stuff is good, but Drums not Dead is amazing. Also, if you did buy it, and love it, I recomend listening to Sightings - Through the Panama. Its a bit noisier, but its got the same sort of vibe. Sort of spooky/weird, with a taste of some bitter cough medicine that made you hallucinate as a kid. You know, weird dreams...thats also music.

Well I guess it does go into the future, but it seems like more things should be listed. Also, its like 45 things come out by Robert Pollard. Im not familiar with the guys music too much, but everything I ever see about him is critics yelling "Stop releasing every thing you record! Multiple double release days in one year is turning into a bad thing very quickley!"

Does this guy have a shit load a variety and range? Or is it all old-man style indie/college rock stuff like I assume it is?

actually, that's the only one i don't have yet. looks like i know what i'm getting next. think i'm going to get deerhunter too if I can ever find it.

i'm liking sightings. surprised i'd never heard of them.

Deerhunter is boss. The Cryptograms LP is fantastic.

Sightings has been around for a while, their albums have been more noisy in the past, exepct one album was pretty minimal/atmospheric stuff. It should be noted that the album I refered by them, as well as the track you heard, was produced by Andrew W.K.

Owning a Turntable, and going to a Record shop and buying like 8 semi random obscure records for $20, and then listening to them should be an event for anyone who enjoys music. Just go and buy some shit based on the cover art and see what you find. Its a blast!

She is really awesome. The album though sort of lost me, I got tired of it fairly quickly. Not sure why, it has plenty of ingerediants I really enjoy. I think maybe it was because at the time I had been listening to a lot of Hella, Mick Barr (Ocrilim, Shred Earthship) and some others. Now I am getting back into it again, I should give it another spin.

You should check out Ahleuchatistas, they are in a similar vein. Lots of wild guitar licks like Marnie, but with more hints of Post-Rock I guess.

I have been meaning to give that a go. I downloaded "Fuckin' A" when it came out a few years ago and did not really enjoy it. But I heard a song of this new album, and I liked it. I have a feeling I would enjoy them more as a singles band, just hearing the song every now and again rather than a whole albums worth.

Is that the tour they are doing with No Age? Because No Age is awesome, but I have heard they are very different live. Anyways, I am PISSED because Liars arn't coming to MPLS, they did come here when they opened for INTERPOL and charged like $30, guh.

As for the Anoint Vinyl, I was super surprised too. I heard it was on vinyl, and emailed the Label, they told me that I would just have to find it in a store because all the copies printed went to the Distributor. Found it my local awesome Record Store.

Get outta here, go live in Lame Zone or something. Although from what I understand their live show does not represent their recordings since its just two of them. But their album "Weirdo Rippers" is one of the best albums of last yeah.

Last show I was at was Dan Deacons Ultimate Reality tour, with awesome local openers Vampire Hands and Gay Beast.

Second time I saw Deacon, this time at a bigger place. It was really entertaining, but not as much as the first time. The Ultimate Reality movie was really sweet though, two drummers pounding out an awesome live soundtrack.

Yeah its more of a party, but he interacts with the audience a lot. Talks a lot between songs, and sets up elaborate fan participation. For instance at the second show I saw he had people form a tunnel by making arks with their arms across to another persons arm. The crowd would then dance through the tunnel, and when they got to the end would form more of the tunnel until everyone was part of the tunnel. Its was sweet.

I saw Ladyhawk open for Black Mountain a few years ago, and I really liked them. But when I heard their debut release, it was nothing like the live show. At the live show the lead singer guy managed to slip on a skateboard and biffed it on the concrete pretty hard. No one had any idea whose skateboard it was, and there was like 5 people at the show by that point. He was also really trashed.

FM3 has the loops available for download, but you don't get the kitschy plastic and speaker entropy.

Thats not nearly the same I imagine. I like the idea of being able to hide this somewhere.

Fuck Buttons are indeed awesome. Great jams.

I have not heard Growings - Vision Swim. But I am listening to their album "Lateral" and its amazing. Less like Black Dice, more like Fuck Buttons but with less noise/abrrasive sounds. Plenty of build up, more pleasant drones, that have a victorious sound. Especially the first track.

I saw the Boredoms last night.

Single greatest live performance by any band I have seen in my entire life. I honestly have no idea what could top it, and whatever it is will destroy me. I was nearly in tears at the end of the encore.

They were playing "in the round" meaning they had brought their own stage, about only about a foot off the ground, and allowed people to view them from three sides. At Boredoms request they had implemented a "No photo, no video" rule, and signs were everywhere and the staff kept telling people "no photos tonight" I am guessing it was because it appeared that it was being filmed by their own videogropher. Someone managed to get an aerial shot however:

Its not a great photo, and you can't really see the single most amazing piece of musical equipment ever. Eyes, 7 Guitar Tree. Its 7 guitars...in one! He played it with drum sticks, and a staff to hit multiple at once.

They played for an hour and a half, then took a small break, and did a 30 minute encore.

If the Boredoms ever come to your town, in any form, go see them. Regardless of previous listens or familiarity. See them.

Ive been looking at videos of them, post concert, and Eye has a different guitar tree at the 77 Boardrum thing back in July.

That version looks more like a bunch of individual guitars. The one he had last night, was ONE guitar with seven necks/head stocks.

You got a much better opening act than I did. It was Human Bell, and only Human Bell. They arn't bad or anything, its just some fairly generic Post-Rock that 9,000 bands have produced in the past 6 years.

Then the next night they played in Chicago, and added Soft Circle as an opener, :(

Ive only heard these two albums, and I love them. I have a few friends who are much much bigger waits fans, and these are the two they recomended to me. But I know they listen to it all, I just don't know what the "other" Waits stuff is like since Rain Dogs / Swordfishtrombones are fairly similar.
