i have managed to miss liars every time they have made it to the UK, which is not good.
you guys don't half get some weird tours, though, liars with interpol? here it'd be interpol plus some UK band that sounds like interpol. |

| Actually, Parts & Labor is really good too, far more joyous and wild than your typical indie band. A lot of y'all might like them. |
i love parts & labor, mapmaker was one of my favourites of last year. awesome band. |

so i just saw boris for the first time and wow, hell of a show. pretty good setlist and awesome sound, best band i've seen in a fair while.
anyone got any thoughts on smile? i'm a lot more into it now than i was a couple months ago. _________________

hey, that is pretty interesting!
until last night i didn't know there was any difference between the japanese release (which i have) and the american on southern lord, but they played a different version of the japanese opener 'message' which is apparently now a straight rock tune and the single with a video and everything (the one linked in that article). i think i prefer it that way - like the article says they kindof deliberately moved away from the straight rock stuff but man, they should always keep that side to them at least a little bit as there aren't many bands that i like doing that better.
i'd agree that smile is pretty patchy and stylistically all over the place, but it definitely has its moments.
my favourites are pink, flood and akuma no uta. _________________

i did wonder. _________________

i simply thought it was Creepy As Hell
at any rate that's not the smile these dudes are talking about |
that smile's a whole lot better though!
i was at the show in london where he played it for the first time ever and two rows in front of me paul mccartney was crying and believe me you don't make a scouser cry unless you have some pretty beautiful eight-way harmonies.
but um yeah i'm not so crazy about the version of good vibrations either. _________________

yeah it's awesome, i think it's the only hip-hop record i've liked this year really. _________________

| Past their (frickin' fantastic) initial duo album, Domingo, both Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa boarded the Tropicalia train and never came back. Not that that's a bad thing; they're two of my favorite artists in the world (well, Caetano is, and so's Gal up until 1980 or so), it's just not really bossa nova. |
yeah that album is awesome, but generally i'm more into the tropicalia stuff. _________________

| heh, same here. did you go last year? i remember having about 4 hours of sunshine in total.. |
yeah i go every year, last year was probably the worst.
but this year was probably the best!
oh man, jay-z was fucking amazing. seriously one of the most powerful headline sets i've ever seen, it all came together perfectly - the band was really good, the crowd was into it and even the setlist was pretty great.
other fun stuff was cut copy, leonard cohen, battles, santogold, billy cobham with asere, booka shade, james zabiela, estelle, black kids, crystal castles, the slackers, dengue fever...i missed lots of things but that always happens. the best thing was probably 'sitting in the sun at glastonbury for once'. _________________

ah, this year's was my second glastonbury evar.
i was at the dance lounge before Jay Z came on. Cadence Weapon played to what was probably a crowd of 10! poor dude look so bummed out before it started, but it was a all good fun.
Crystal Castles was amusing - I was pissed that they stopped the set after 4 songs. Don't think any other act got the crowd going as mental as they did.. I was also a bit annoyed that the singer decided to whisper the lyrics instead of singing 'em!
Dizzee Rascal was awesome as always, and the special appearance from Franz Ferdinand was surprisingly good too.
Im so brown from the sun.. Fucking awesome! |
yeah i wasn't happy at missing cadence weapon, i'd have caught a bit before jay-z but i had a prior arrangement with battles. that's a seriously bad clash though, it's like they're punishing people with taste.
i'm not a massive fan of crystal castles but they are always brilliant live, i couldn't even tell why they were kicked off the second time.
my friend accidentally insulted franz ferdinand to their faces at 4am in trash city, i said 'oh you know franz ferdinand played earlier' and she said 'yeah i kindof really hate franz ferdinand' and then i noticed they were standing right next to us. oops. they were friendly though! _________________

i'd say the first album is 300% better but breaking into heaven is pretty incredible.
they're all around one of my favourite bands though, the second album isn't as bad as most people make out...it's just that the first one is on another level. i'm pretty sure she bangs the drums is the perfect song.
i guess i should check out the new primal scream then? the last one was really bad but this one has a more positive buzz as far as i can tell. i'm sure it won't be another XTRMNTR but i gave up hope for that long ago. _________________

well you know how when Vanishing Point came out, people forgot about that record they released right after Screamadelica?
that's kind of what this record is, the record that makes people forget about Riot City Blues. |
wow, you're not wrong. this record's pretty tight!
it covers a lot of ground but most importantly never sounds like a bad rolling stones cover band. _________________
