Because if there's one thing hip kids can't get enough of these days, it's gimmicky dance music, although it does seem to be on it's way out.

Despite the fact that I find James Murphy fairly obnoxious, I do dig his music and am 100% supportive of his Quixotic dream of hitting #1 on the Billboard charts.

http://forums.dfarecords.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2257

It would be funny.

I've been on a big A Sunny Day In Glasgow kick again, in anticipation of the new full length coming out next month. I swear I cannot say enough good things about this band. They make gorgeous underwater banshee-wail pop. It's sort of like MBV except...buoyant and playful instead of woozy and melancholy.

Check them out here:
http://www.asunnydayinglasgow.com/asdg/index.html

"The Sunniest Day Ever" might well be in my top ten songs of last year.

I've been trying to get into Jesu, but I'm just not feeling it. I do appreciate the aesthetic the guy is aiming for, but the tunes themselves just sound boring to me.

Yo Chompers, that is some quality mope-folk you've got going on there.

My name is also Zach and I also record music fairly regularly.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/v4pfjt (more of a sound collage than a song)

http://www.sendspace.com/file/kw52d1 (this is from a few years ago)

Surprisingly, they go together well if you play them in succession.

I was extremely pleased to find this recently:

http://lastdaysofman.blogspot.com/2006/12/volcano-suns-bright-orange-years.html

The entirety of the long out-of-print first Volcano Suns album up on this guy's blog. I've been trying to find this ever since I first heard "Jak" about four years ago. For those who don't know, the Suns were the band that Peter Prescott of Mission of Burma formed after Burma initially broke up back in the early 80s.

There's a certain similarity between the two bands' sounds, but the Suns are more rowdy and less artsy. The guy at the blog makes note that it sounds like a kind of midwestern melding of The Replacements and Butthole Surfers (despite their being a Boston band and all) It's hot. "Hot" meaning the sounds convey the notion of a very intense heat. Like a soundtrack to summer riots. Do give it a listen.

Oh man, Boadrum was fucking incredible. My head is still pounding. Good vibrations all around, totally whacked-out dancing hippies, you could look up and see people watching from the Manhattan bridge. It started out good and just got better and better. After the sun went down it was just pure magic. A bunch of people have already youtubed it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrOGRUKqDFY

There was a group of official camerapeople as well so there's probably a DVD in the works. I should hope so.

Quite right. This kid behind me was like "enough with the fucking howling already" and I was like "right on, man!" Soft Circle was pretty rad though. I'll look into his new album.

I'm not a huge huge Stereolab fan, but their album Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements is occasionally my favorite album of all time.

It's got a bit of a noisier and harder-edged sound than most of their stuff, so if that sounds interesting to you, by all means check it out.

my 2 cents:
Vs.>The Obliterati>>>>>>>>OnOFFOn

I don't know why, but OnOFFOn was just such an underwhelming album for me, while Obliterati was one of my favorite things that came out in 06.

I'd like to recommend the following to fans everywhere of Madlib, Sun Ra, and awesome chill beats:

Every time I listen to this it's like all my stress has evaporated and I'm orbiting the earth on some kind of magic jazz satellite.

!...

There's a new Sambomaster album out.

It's called 音楽の子供はみな歌う (Ongaku no Kodomo wa Mina Utau (something like "all the children sing the music" or some such thing, I dunno, I don't speak Japanese))

It has sort of an ugly cover:

I've gotten a chance to listen to it, and...I found it sort of disappointing compared to the last one, but I'm curious to hear some other opinions. To me it sounds like they're continuing to do what they do well enough, but it lacks the spark of intense crazy-desperateness that was all over the last album (which was AWESOME). The new one has some damn nice hooks on it, but the songs feel all kind of samey and sort of run together in my brain. But I am willing to be proven wrong about this. In fact, I want to be proven wrong about this. Badly!

On an unrelated note, I missed seeing High on Fire this weekend. Twice. But mark my words, I will see this band, before the year is out.

This album is sooooo good. The ideal listening environment would probably be cruising through the Arizona desert at dawn, in a vintage convertible. Yes. Or on top of a mountain, blasting through a huge PA. Classic rock played post-rock style, I suppose. Neil Young suspended in molasses. Words like "elegiac" come to mind.

What I've heard from this so far has been surprisingly good. I thought that Face The Truth was fairly enjoyable, if slight, but that Malkmus was pretty much doomed to mediocrity for the rest of his career. Thankfully I think I've been proven wrong. I hadn't been impressed with the jam-oriented direction the man had been moving in, but this new stuff seems more solidly-constructed (probably in no small part thanks to the new drummer (a good drummer is crucial)), and the instrumental bits actually feel like they go places. Unfortunately his lyrics are overall getting worse.

Smile is...patchy, in my opinion. Not bad, but not their best. My favorites so far remain Amplifier Worship, Flood, Pink, and Rainbow.

As for me, I dig them. Nouns is a good solid record. Good sounds. The vocals are pretty weak though.

I'm really digging this Alex Moulton fellow right now. Epic old school synthy-whatever. Apparently he's also a filmmaker. It makes sense, as this is pretty cinematic sounding stuff. Gotta love that cheesy airbrush sci-fantasy artwork!

Isn't Anything, the angsty, rock-y, brutal predecessor of Loveless. In some ways it's a better album, and in other ways, a far worse one. It had some really incredible b-sides, too.

Guys guys new Byrne + Eno track, "Strange Overtones," you can snag the "official" download here, though you can find it in lots of other places, of course.

I dig the fact that it's going to be a pop album and I really want to like this song, the vocal part is really great, but the beat/arrangement/production are just kind of...cheesy and limp. I'm a big Eno fan, so it's disappointing. Maybe it will grow on me.

Yes I just spoiler-tagged my opinion, don't want to be prejudicing anyone.

Please listen to the new TV on the Radio song, it is all kinds of stellar.

All the crazy sonics and funkiness of the last album, minus the unbearable sense of malaise (surely I'm not the only one who felt this way..?). In fact, they sound downright ecstatic here.

See, I'm a firm believer that there's nothing wrong with doing stuff that's already been done before, provided you do it with skill and enthusiasm, two things TVOTR have got in spades here. Also I said that they sound ecstatic, not that the song necessarily makes me feel quite the same. Which is a little bit different.

I also for some reason feel the need to explain that, from an "objective" standpoint, I thought Cookie Mountain was a really good record, but I can't stand listening to it because it makes me feel so, so depressed. Don't get me wrong, I like music of all emotional colors, but something about that record in particular just makes me feel really shitty. Can't quite explain it.

Uhh, I wouldn't exactly call that stuff "drone" music, Captain America. If you mean like ugly/evil dronemetal, then by all means get Black One by Sunn O))) if you haven't already.

And if you want nothing but the best in brootal stoner riffage, Dopethrone by Electric Wizard.
