Bleh. They've got technical skill (not THAT much technical skill) and no heart whatsoever. I mean, I'll listen to them, but the best cover band of all time? Noooo sir. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

But every cover they do is better than the original! And what do you mean by no heart whatsoever? I have not seen them live, but have seen members of the band live in other bands, seems like they have plenty of heart to me. They lay it down. |
I dunno, it just seems robotic to me. They're like the Rush of videogame cover bands. (Insert Rush fan saying Rush has heart too.) It's not that I mind so much, I still like their stuff, I just wouldn't call them the best.
I mean, you've got Metroid Metal out there to compete with, just for starters. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

| i like the minibosses and the advantage for different reasons. the minibosses are a bit heavier, and their cover of metroid is good. the advantage are great, and have a more intricate sound. i agree with Beef about their covers being better than the originals (see: metal gear, wizards and warriors). they also tend to play faster than the minibosses. different strokes i guess. |
Well, I wasn't trying to defend the Minibosses or say they were great or anything. Given a choice between the two, I'd go with the Advantage myself.
It was just, you know, saying they're the best cover band ever is a little much. Even saying they're the best video game cover band is a little much. Metroid Metal and Neskvartetten (I think I spelled that right, damn Nordics) are pretty stiff competetition, and in fact I'd say they hand the Advantage its own ass pretty handily. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Me too!
Links are in order!
Metroid Metal! Just get the whole original Metroid sountrack (the tracks that kicked off the project) and listen to an epic prog metal odyssey. It's not really a "band" per se; it's one dude playing all the instruments and recording over himself. He really does play all the instruments, though, and I've seen videos of him doing a couple MM tunes (Theme, Brinstar) with an actual band and he can totally play the licks. His name is Grant Henry. I don't know if there's a better metal name.
The interesting thing about MM is that there's five parts: drums, bass, rhythm and TWO lead guitars. That's cause every Metroid track is in counterpoint and you need two lead lines to get both melodies. MM made me appreciate the difference between 8-bit and post-8-bit music for the first time.
Neskvartetten! Blistering jazz quartet. Found em through OCRemix. The styles vary fairly widely, but they're all jazz-centric (New Orleans through meandering beat styles and so on). Waltz for Zora is a good entry point; it's got the main theme right there at the beginning.
special vg cover band gaiden
Select Start! I can't find a better site... grr. I have more of their songs on my hard drive though, lord knows where I got them. Anyway, they're sort of a chamber ensemble, and they're not technically that great - chronically out of tune - but their arrangements are interesting and their instrumentation is pretty unique. I think Kraid is their best; their out-of-tuneness and slightly not-togetherness actually works in their favor, making the tune creepier. I dig it. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Dude, I was not joking about Metroid Metal. It truly is The Shit.
Funny thing is, his original stuff shows the same technical skill, but isn't nearly as good. A lot of that has to do with the vocals, which aren't great and the lyrics are pretty lame. But even the instrumentals don't measure up. He's like this fantastic player and arranger but he just doesn't have that spark of creativity to come up with great tunes in the first place. It's interesting. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

I watched the DVD "Everyone Stares: The Police Inside out" Stewart Copeland (the drummer) basically filmed everything they ever did with a 8mm camera. It covers all their albums, and tours etc. He then edited it down to a 73 minute film thats very entertaining, and a really interesting glimpse into a band that goes from small to MEGA FUCKING BIG. Its got footage of them dragging luggage into seedy motel rooms, and then later shows them recording on a tropical island traveling in Limos. The Police really screamed through their career too, it was only a 9 year stint, they released 5 albums, and won tons of grammys. And then Sting got all big and made much lamer music on his own.
Check it out if you love the Police, and like lots of 70s/80s locals filmed by a famous drummer.
Only complaint is that Copelands narration is pretty dry, but informative and really honest. |
Copeland is the ill nah. I say this as a drummer and as a man. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

I just saw the Wiyos. Then I bought one of their records. It was totally worth it.
This man can blow a fucking harp. If you like old-timey hothouse hokum, look up the Wiyos. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Neil Peart's no anybody. He'd do better as a triathlete than a drummer. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

So I got a 30GB Zune for Christmas. It just baaaarely fits all the music I own (and all the music I "own"). It is great for commuting to and from school.
Mostly I just play all 5,500 songs on random, but I've started listening to albums that I got just for one or two or three songs and never listened to the entirety of.
The Darkness' Permission to Land is fucking jesus shit awesome. Growing on Me. Growing on Me! Yes! Fuck!

| Metallica's new album "Death Magnetic" doesn't suck! Its actually quite good. There's only 1---maybe 2 songs that I really don't like. There are several that I do like quite a bit. Strangely, the producition is really shitty. It sounds like a well made demo. The drums are flat sounding with hardly any oomph. Overall, the soundstage lacks depth and seperation. It reminds me of a monaural track ran through a matrix to make it seem stereo. |
'
St. Anger is also like this. Modern Metallica has always been a weird beast to me - it's like they always encapsulate the tropes of whatever metal is mainstream at the time, which contributes awfulness; and yet some of their native musicianship comes though, and the songs are slightly more interesting than all the incredibly bland stuff they're ostensibly based on. I can't decide whether or not this is praiseworthy. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |
