if you don't remember Averaging Gradius, go check that out too

this guy who made all this may or may not have ever heard of Averaging Gradius, but his little project is amazing in how it advances that same idea by leaps and bounds. in short, he hacked the Snes9x emulator to replay multiple playthrough recordings and automatically compile the above result.

he also provides downloads of his hacked emulator for anyone to try it out too -- possibly with any SNES game, though only Mario has been tested! well, what are you waiting for?

oh yeah there's also a long musing on quantum physics which I won't even attempt to properly summarize.

I keep wanting to think that it's the same Mario that beats every little challenge. That was one thing that was different about Averaging Gradius - you could tell the ships apart. Though the explosion of Marios at the hard bits is cool.

How did this guy hack the emu to do this? Amazing. And beautiful. I want to see more videos of this kind.

this'd make a good counterpart to a high-stakes, single-segment speedrun, or any of the original, laborious asshole mario videos ... being able to shrug off and even admire all these slips and blunders feels cathartic. reminds me of that trackmania replay

In the similiar vein of Asshole Mario and the aforementioned self-propelled Mario, there's this video here:

It plays to an IOSYS cover of a Touhou song that is infamous.

I think this might be part of a new trend following the birth of the Vocaloid - musical machinima.

This is very cool.

Hmmm....for the upcoming FKW (or FCW) we should get everyone to play through one game, then submit the replays to create this. I'm suggesting Contra 3 right now.

Wow. That's actually almost exactly how I imagined a Mario 'averaging' would turn out. Better in some ways. That's bad ass... I'm sorta jealous :P

I think the biggest difference, though, between this and Averaging Gradius (at least from my very biased point of view since) is that this project focuses on one person slowly learning how to get through the level. That's a really intriguing aspect... It would be cool to watch someone who was completely unfamiliar with Mario slowly learn the game mechanics and finish a level (obviously playing a more forgiving level.)

Awesomely executed. I want more!

I'm sensing some strange synchronicity...

Multiple save states of different games over one game, overlayed into a time-lapse type video? Yes please!

I love this. I love how it's tied into QM, too.

Still waiting to hear about other experiments with his emulator. If I get time, I guess I might give it a try.

From what I read, most of the magic is in the video production, not the emulator. He basically modified it to maintain separate run-throughs, rather than over-writing the current one every time he did a rewind. The bit that flattened all of that into a single movie was in the video post-production, not the emulator.

Still very cool though.

It's interesting how often, even in Asshole Mario, that the player responses are identical. I'd surmise that platformers have a greater than average correspondence in this regard.

In this asshole mario video there's only one player, though, and he cheated using savestates, from what I gathered. What the latter means is that several Marios follow the exact same path for the first part of the video, and at some point diverge (when the player accessed the savestate in that position).
