I am giving up refined sugars and coffee in excess of my morning cup.

I don't believe in God but I do believe that Lent is a good ritual which secular humanists can and should coopt for the benefit of mankind. So we can talk about that too.

If you aren't Catholic, I suggest you try lent out this year. You can cheat on Sundays, according to some versions of the rules.

I am not Catholic but I gave up masturbation for Lent a few years ago. I gave up not masturbating when wet dreams started kicking in.

Actually me and some people are waging bets on our Lent deprivations. I myself will actualy swear off alcohol. That may or may not include going out to bars and such; I am hesitant to waste their time by ordering juice and cola, so unless friends drag me out to play pool or something, I'm gonna be a big homebody. On the plus side I won't have any alcohol in my system and I'll save tons of money.

I didn't even start drinking until I was 24-25, so 40 days of sobriety won't hurt me.

This is all starting Friday at 12:01AM. Gives me time to go out tonight, and finish the last beer in the fridge.

It's Stoic self-conditioning.

After Lent, I will stand under a waterfall to deaden my nerves to pain.

The point is to experience life more richly and to assert your dominance over your desires.

For example, I gave up all condiments/seasoning a few years ago and only ate bread for lunch. Without all of these flavors on top of my meals I came to really appreciate the taste of foods which I had been eating forever but never really tasting.

Self discipline is also a thing worth developing. It eases my existential worries to control my desires some.

I was raised to celebrate Lent by adding something better to my daily life, rather than subtracting something that I feel is negative.

So! From my end, I am trying to decide what I will add for Lent.

I'm not Catholic either, but I'm doing a solidarity Lent with a (also non-Catholic) friend who's giving up masturbation. Gotta keep each other honest and all that.

Things have been going pretty well so far, but it's way too soon to tell.

Honestly I can only see good things coming from this.

This sounds like a wonderful thing! I think I'll try it. From now until the end of March (I'm not about to pay attention to when Lent starts and stops) I'll practice the piano for at least 10 minutes a day.

Brillo, I don't think giving up masturbation counts if you and your friend jerk eachother off instead of yourselves.

I was unclear (or e-sarcasm detector is off), he decided to give up masturbation. I said "Good plan, I'll join you (in not masturbating), knowing full well you'll probably give up (and start again) in a week or two and then I'll forget about it too (and start again)."

Just to be clear.

It's a very half-assed "me-too" lent. More of a social experiment than character-building really.

Yeah, I already don't drink, smoke, masturbate, eat meat, or eat sugar.

Pretty sure I don't have to participate in this!

Yeah, Catholic Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, which was yesterday (which I totally fucking didn't notice, I'm going to hell, etc.), but I guess I'll get a late start.

I'm already a bit ascetic, so it's hard to think of something. I guess I'll try to get out of bed before or at 8AM (I can't think of a way to use the term "give up" for this without implying that if I'm not out of bed by 8AM I would have to stay in bed the whole day).

Also, if you really want to play it Catholic, no meat on Fridays. Vegans, figure out your own translation of this, or not.

I'm giving up tempting catholic girls into breaking vows of chastity for lent while they're dressed in their old catholic school girl uniforms.

I'm kind of tired of pleated plaid skirts, honestly.

Clever or not, here it goes:

I went out for some final drinks with a friend, and I didn't make it back in time to drink that last beer in the fridge. So there it sits, until I pour it out or somebody comes over.

Go for, it man. It was tough not having a beer or two at a pub trivia night tonight. Even worse, next Tuesday there's a trivia night at, get this, a beer bar/lounge :(

I'm United Methodist, so we don't have that, but when I went to a Catholic high school, Lent was great for the school lunches. We always had catfish or red beans and rice or seafood gumbo, which was way better than the usual fare!

bleh,

that was the one thing I absolutely hated about catholic school. They always served fish on friday and it's always nasty ass. I hate fish anyway.
Not only did I not get to eat lunch but when I came home, fish was waiting for me at the dinner table too. I quickly learned to go out with my baptist friends on friday nights.

Goddamnit Diaz, you had better not be wasting Grey Goose vodka like that. There are sober kids in Africa that don't have the luxury of wasting alcohol. We aren't going anywhere until you finish that bottle, and I mean it mister.

For Lent, I've given up ham and other pork products.

The not masturbate thing sounds like a good idea. Just imagine the sex with 40 days of bottled up passion!

wait, is Lent forty days? blah

I don't think I'll ever be able to beat my previous record anyway.
