Neat. I suppose. |
Whoa, this is perfect for me.
I live in a secluded enough spot to not only be 100+ miles from anything resembling a fighting game scene (Dallas) but also 10 miles away from high speed internet. I at least attend tournaments when I can. So far, I haven't done bad... but when I get better playing real face to face tournament matches and casuals than I have in hours and hours spent in training mode, it kind of reminds me what I'm missing out on.
I don't think this is a replacement by any means, but maybe it can help until I at least get online. _________________

This really fascinates me. Making an AI for fighting games was a project I was kicking around a while back, and I would love to see how well this works out, and how it works (and if we could get hooks into to...hrm....) _________________

| The original Virtua Fighter 4 had this. You could teach a sort of disciple AI 1 on 1 in a special training mode as well as show it replays and have it pick up new strategies from that. You could also watch its own replays and then encourage or discourage various actions on the fly, if I recall correctly. Both VF4 and VF4 Evo's Quest Mode had you traveling to various real world arcade locations and fighting AIs based on actual high level players. It was really neat, but I'm not as interested in it in a context divorced from the arcade-hopping world tour mode type premise VF4 used. |

To be more accurate, this was in the original Caster version that I branched the derivative versions off from.
What you're referring to is called th075Booster. It's a sort of situational learning AI, and could learn from replays/live play/pretty much anything, but tbh it's kind of stupid and needed a LOT of information for it to do things. It has no real global situational awareness so it gets owned up by projectiles, and the code for handling supers was never in place.(it's literally something like: do I have access to them? FUCK YEAH LET'S DO IT) So, it's a pretty neat concept but outclassed by all but the weakest players. It is pretty good practice, though, since it moves in a human-like way, even if it has zero defense. |

Jesus, it was the Amano show until that beastly Zantetsu showed up.
Man, I want to play some Last Blade 2. I've only played it once before on the Dreamcast. _________________

That's pretty much all he did. There was a Zantetsu earlier that was getting whomped by Amano but then at the end a true Zantetsu player showed up and was comboing and doing aerial spikes and all sorts of shit.
Disappointed a Hibiki player only showed up at the very end.
Maybe I'll bust out Last Blade and play a bit right now. _________________

Soul Calibur II still has the most entertainingly stupid story mode in a fighter (though I haven't played any other SC.) They seriously wrote like five paragraphs of awkward fanfiction for every mission, with a continuing plot. Since you can switch characters at any time, all text referring to the protagonist is completely ambiguous.
The special conditions in some missions could be genuinely interesting at times: having to jump at intervals to avoid an earthquake, passing a timed bomb back and forth with every hit, being constantly pulled together by an invisible chain. Some stages had an extremely fast-acting quicksand floor that was hilarious to watch.
I seem to remember reading that SC III had some kind of strategy side game; how disastrous did it turn out? |

It was maybe slightly OK? Certainly not as interesting as you make SCII's mode out to be. It was mostly a melodramatic story with a "put fighter here, play out fight when attacked/let the computer decide" mechanic. Boring as hell, usually reliant on "you are poisoned/can't block/etc." conditions, and unfortunately the only way to unlock most of the create-a-character stuff.
edit: It was pretty awful, though. |

my memories are undoubtedly clouded by nostalgia goggles, but i honestly remember it being a good deal of fun to screw around in. at least, it earned the value of what i paid for the game, since I never was able to play against human opponents. while i've always had gamer friends, none of them know shit about fighters or care to learn. xbox live has thankfully negated this issue but face-to-face is always preferable.
you gotta admit that it's a step up from the "story modes" in guilty gear and most anime-ish fighters, where it's just arcade mode with tons of retarded dialogue before every match. |

It's still the best Les Miserables fighting game ever, but the site that used to host it is down forever and I can't find anywhere else to download it. |

Not sure if you noticed this in the review on that page:

Worth a shot, I guess. |

This actually works every one out of five times.
I'm OK with constantly reopening and closing it though, so hey. ARM JOE. |

I think its more that some might be able to L1 X-Factor and do a 100% Combo while others might not. I've spotted 100%'s from Zero and Dante on L1's as well. But someone found a combo that already does 70% on another sent with 4 bars.
Considering this is pre-release stuff, it can only get nastier from here.
Oh yeah and you can select stage or character themes. Neat. _________________

Yeah, honestly the opening 100% combos via popping X-Factor on first characters in Marvel 3 really isn't that much different from MvC2 Magneto killing one (or even two, if he catches your assist on the KO snapback!) character in an opening reset to snapback combo. Only difference is now it should be more or less universal due to X-Factor, rather than the domain of an elite few with devastating setups. (And of course because of the way they changed assist vulnerability, you'll no longer get the DOUBLE touch of death by way of infinite launch.)
And if you lose your first character to such a really good look, well...it definitely sucks, but you still have two more characters and an X-Factor of your own, so if you play carefully and patiently you could be looking at an instagib comeback of your own. It will suck to be a newbie in Marvel 3 just like it sucked to be a newbie in Marvel 2, but at least this time the execution barrier should be much lower, and it should be a lot harder to "lose at the select screen", so to speak, because almost everybody will have access to this kind of touch-of-death stuff.
Select Best Buys are supposed to be getting Marvel 3 demo stations within the week. GAF thread suggests might be Tuesday for most locations, still waiting on reports from Tampa as to whether or not the Brandon location has it already. Thank God I don't yet have a job. :D _________________

French-Bread's new game was announced. It's an original HD 2D title, "Under Night IN-VERSE." They might have matched their own work on Melty Blood for "dumbest fucking videogame title."
I'm so proud of them. *sniff*
(also i love how they're keeping up the Type-Moon tradition of putting complete fucking nonsense under the logo. "Thousand night, Recurrence night, Reverie end Invite. and... [7days Immortal] Unreal BLACK THINGS")

$10 says Botage plays the fruitcake with the feathers on his vest.
I have no opinion on this until I see gameplay footage. Would accept "Melty Blood with slightly less vaginas", though. _________________

Yeah, I was looking around for info on French Bread's expected game announcement and I read somewhere (I think the SRK Melty Blood thread) what seemed like news on upcoming characters for MBAACC, including Power Ciel? But I thought CC was already out? And it said something about there being an expected release date of Spring, with a Summer playtest. It made no sense.
And who is Power Ciel? Is that just her without her coat on? |

Shockingly enough, they're doing another revision to the now-inaccurately-named Current Code, adding Holy Order Ciel as a playable character with promises of one more character ($5 says it's another crossover character like Ryogi) to be announced later on. This is coming out in the Summer or something, while Under Night is targeted for Fall 2011.
I mean I guess they could add SHIKI Tohno to complete the Tsukihime villain set after ten years but I don't think anyone really cared about him ever _________________

Yeah, and what powers would he have anyway? Some watered down Roa skills and the ability to cut life? Laaaame.
Powered Ciel is basically Ciel going 100%, taking her nun outfit off and using her holy scripture conceptual weapon she only pulls out for supers. I bet it'd be a heavier, harder-hitting version of the normal Ciel with more attacks using her weapon and the sprite redrawn to match how she looks like when she's doing the super - bare arms with holy markings on her back. _________________
