Great post Ben.
Interstellar Dinghy: As a Ryu player in ssf4, Ryu has both enough matchups to make games interesting, and his playstyle against a lot of the cast needs to be varied significantly in one matchup to the next. This is contrasted against pretty much the entire rest of the series where you don't really need to do much different unless you're playing against Gief or Sim. (the exception to this is of course alpha/2/3) The Dictator matchup for example is something I always have trouble with, maybe beating an equal skill Dictator like half the time.
Bunch of practical knowledge about ryu vs. dictator matchup from yours truly, feel free to disregard: he has incredible pokes and pressure game, and to add to that, it's far too dangerous for Ryu to use some of his tools (FB et al) to build precious meter or do damage when you see he has U2 or 1+ bars (EX knee press can punish FB from 2/3 screen length and has frame advantage on block if done from afar), c.HK is punishable on block by LK knee press, which very nearly eliminates the use of that normal as a poke. SRK and normals trade with headstomp more often than not it seems, making the air a dangerous place to be when you're more than mid-screen away. Dictator also has this amazing corner pressure game that Ryu has very few answers to. Numerous frame traps and LK knee press basically for free pressure and chip damage and s.HK to thwart every jump out attempt. Ryu's best bet is air tatsuing away, but that's not very safe either (can punish with U2). So, even if you manage to keep yourself out of the corner, you find yourself in a tense game of footsies at most times (only when he doesn't have U2) and Dictator is going to be trying to bait out those c.MK xx FB cancels so he can nab you with EX knee press or U2. All of these things lead to a very dangerous game, but it's really all balanced out by the fact that Ryu can jump in for free and once you land a knockdown you can maul the shit out of him.
So generally what you get in that matchup is a very static, patient game with lots of blocking since everything either player can do is risky. If you're playing against say, boxer, the game is much simpler to think about simply because boxer doesn't have all that many tools to deal with anything other than getting in, and since getting in is all you need to worry about him doing, it's a much less dynamic game.
Ryu isn't boring since it's all up to the skill of the player to make him effective. _________________

james but what does that have to do with fighting games?
I think I used to really like 3S back when I didn't know exactly what was required to be good at it, that and my friend played Urien about a thousand times better than I ever could and it really just discouraged me from playing it. That said, it's really fun to fuck around in just because it's so breezy and nice looking and I wouldn't mind fucking around with it on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Perhaps I'd like it more if someone showed me the ropes of Ryu, but I'm too busy grinding my SSF4 Ryu up to bother with that. _________________

Bloody Roar was good. The sequels, perhaps not so good, but more polished. _________________

Hey guys as someone who hasn't played a darkstalkers game but only casually want to get into it is it ok if I play the PSP port thingy? I know the stick makes it hard to pull off moves, and the d-pad is even worse (I've been playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 on it as well) but I've been using my PSP more and more lately and I figured since I wasn't planning on mastering it I could put up with the controls (like I am doing with SFA3). I dunno if it's a terrible port, though, or that I'll miss something if I just start with the PSP game, which is why I'm asking here. I'm also wondering if it has any fun special single player modes to play like SFA3 does with World Tour (or any single player modes at all? besides arcade, of course). Also if you think I shouldn't start with the PSP port then which one should I play?
~thanks~ |
Thank you for my next avatar! With permission of course.
edit: goddamn, that's beautiful on the light grey! _________________

I've played him since SF2 in literally every game (yes, including street fighter EX + alpha and pocket fighter) since then so. . .
I mean they could pretty much just fuck with his framedata so that all of his moves reach further or adding special properties to his moves like a vacuum effect on his hurricane kick. I realize I'm really reaching here but I still think they should try to make him a viable character. Maybe just make him the new cable with air shinkuu hadouken x2 _________________

Here's BotageL's guide to training for competitive fighting game playing:
1) RESEARCH! Find videos showing interesting tactics, strategies, and combos for your character in actual matches, and try to figure out what they're doing and why. This ties into:
2) HIT THE LAB! Go into training mode, set up some situations and build up muscle memory on things you're going to be doing frequently, so when you get that counter hit 2A you know where to go from there.
3) FIND LOCAL PLAYERS AND FIGHT THEM. A LOT! You're not going to hit all your training mode shit in a real fight until you try it. And fighting other opponents in actual matches, outside of lag conditions, will help you learn about both your character's options and matchups. You'll lose a lot, and you'll like it, because every match you play will teach you something.
4) REPEAT AGAIN |
Man I totally read step 3 as FIND LOCAL PLAYERS AND SMOKE WEED WITH THEM. Yeah I just woke up.
(this would totally work though)
