really enjoying this thread, and also would LOVE to hear more about vampire savior. i'm tempted to give it a go!

You really should! As someone who probably has no business playing fighters, I find it the most approachable of Capcom's 2D fighters of the time, except maybe MvC1. Inputs just seem more forgiving, and I find that all the varied and strong normals make specials not nearly as important as some games, at least at low level. It just clicks with me, though I'm still bad at it.

I really didn't like the Striker system, nor the Armour/Counter modes (not that I think I ever really learnt what they were about). It just kind of felt like they added shit for the sake of adding shit. From what I understand the Strikers were really shoddily implemented too, with a large majority of them being worthless and a select few totally overpowered. It did have very nice presentation though, probably some of the best in the series if you ask me.

Pretty much this. I have a love of 99 myself, probably since it was my first KOF, but even then I never really saw much use out of the new gimmicks.
And I agree about the presentation, I think 99 and 2k were the height of presentation for Neo Geo KOF.

On the Clark subject, is there any reason to favor any particular running grab/mount tackle follow up over another though the various games? They look to do the same damage, so I always just go by how reliably I can follow up with the flash elbow, though I think in 99 on only one follow up even lets you.

'98 Clark is just kinda overshadowed by '98 Ralf in a lot of ways.

Has Clark ever really not been overshadowed by Ralf though? Other than 94 when they were the same.
I love using the Ikaris, and Ralf is pretty much the permanent third fighter for me should I (and eventually, I will) mess up with Clark and Leona, because I know I've got the best chance to clean house with Ralf in any situation I'm not totally getting stomped in.

Since '98, Clark tends mostly from mid-tier to upper-mid tier (he was actually pretty close to top in XI by many counts), aside from that embarrasing little period in KOF XII that I'd rather not think or talk about.

I hear he still doesn't have his frankensteiner in XIII though. That's a downer, I've been bouncing between vanilla 98 and 2k2 lately, and have recently come to appreciate how many things you can catch your opponent in the middle of doing with it.
The normals issue with Clark is telling in part on my current bad habit with him, sometime I get too grab happy, and don't use normals as much as I should. Though he's probably now my second best Ikari behind Ralf, taking Leona's spot, while Whip is forever shunned as the eternal striker. I just never like using Whip, though if I ever get around to playing XI, I'll just have to manage.

The minigames were the second best part of Maximum Impact (the best part being the English dub).

I'm sorry, but I just can't accept a Terry Bogard that speaks proper English.

I always got the impression that he and Mary were, like, actually retarded. Or at least heavily brain-damaged.

What about Geese? I WUH STEN MA HANS WIF YUR BRUH is pretty high grade stuff. Then again, all that falling off buildings may indeed have given him a bit of brain damage.
And am I the only one weirded out a bit by Krauser, since he actually does speak proper English/German? Tekken and VF actually have some folks speaking their appropriate languages, and it doesn't bother me, but Krauser alone amongst a sea of Engrish just seems so incongruent somehow.

She-Hulk catches a speeding car and flings it over her head; someone tell me what this is a reference to.

Only thing that springs to mind is that Akiko in Eternal Fighter Zero had some car slinging moves.
