it's just really questionable pandering since they're dropping hints everywhere that Kumiko might actually like Childhood Friend Trombone but she doesn't know it because she doesn't know anything about herself because she's a dumb teenager and Reina wants J.K. Simmons which would totally blow up in her face if S!E was another cour longer, but she's special and intense and probably a bit unsocialized (okay, a lot unsocialized)

meanwhile, Tuba Guy and Tuba Girl have an actual, functional relationship like it's no big deal and we get to see none of it, presumably because they are normal and Background Trumpet Girl #2 clearly wants BTG #1 but we hate since she's an audition-hating harpy, so

edit: basically, I have less a problem with how they're showing things and more with what they're showing, but I also realize Kyoani got bills to pay. I also don't feel like finding out how much of this is reaching out from the source material.

I actually liked the first 3/4's of the third M'dokes movie. Could've been a good ending to it all but then pulls this crazy stunt that pretty much shattered any good will I had towards it.

Shinbo's style (i.e. jizzing directly into the audience's eyesockets) is something I can genuinely enjoy in appropriate dosages but at a running time of nearly two uninterrupted hours it quickly degenerates into overkill.

Also I lol'ed when I looked at the credits for Expelled From Paradise and saw that elite voice actresses like Megumi Hayashibara and Kotono Mitsuishi were relegated to one or two lines in bit roles at the end while Kugimiya shat in my eardrums for the duration of the movie.

This in addition to Netflix's awful white-font subtitles which are nearly illegible during daytime scenes made me seriously consider watching the dub but if there's one kind of voice I can't stand nearly as much as squealing seiyuu like Kugimiya it's Wendee Lee's supermarket PA lady voice.

White subtitles with no border? Hell yeah, they get lost in light backgrounds. My FLCL copy is terrible because of this, particularly because I'm used to the sub rather than the dub. I've been meaning to just burn another copy so I can read the damn things without squinting.

which is weird, since every time I watch something on Netflix, I get yellow subtitles. but yeah, white subs only work with a border since white isn't inherently a contrast-y color

I actually saw When Marnie Was There today and it was shown with subtitles generated by the server because DCPs and was actually aghast when, whenever italics were used, apostrophes would be misaligned and clip letters. but that was white subs with borders (though that's not saying anything since you can override font color and size on some servers).

I don't know where to begin with unpacking with this movie

I like that most of the movie is a giant, extended middle finger at the hordes of Madoka fans clamoring for more since it's basically some fan-fiction tier remixing of the TV show. then it goes full-on Dark City/Matrix and rapidly goes downhill from there

then it starts mining religious stuff

of course if she became a god, the God, and lifted magical girls to mahou shoujo Valhalla, there would have to be a magical girl devil, someone who purposefully cast themselves from heaven to create discord

this is interesting and dumb

I'm still putting my eyes back in place after they came loose from being rolled so hard from the revelation that the most powerful emotion is love

I spent 2 hours watching a plot that could've been handled in 40 minutes, tops

something something of course the magical girl devil is gay, that's Forbidden Love

Sound Euphonium ended. the ending was okay, I guess? I mean, taken as a discrete whole, the show was a nice watch, but otherwise resembles the first arc in much longer story and they were even dropping hints future at future plot threads and revelations and it's just like "Why?" unless they decide to make a sequel series years from now. anyway,I give it a Kyoani does nice backgrounds/10

it warms my heart to find out that Ore Monogatari is running another season because I had assumed it was going to be a one-and-done deal because that's what all the cool kids do now and I'll have something else chill to watch with Working and silly like Symphogear

man, the second season of Gatchaman Crowds is this season too

Eva is a pipe dream, it has enough prestige and infamy that it's probably fucking expensive and considering 3.33 still hasn't come out in North America, Khara doesn't seem like the greatest or easiest partner to work with (not to mention they would probably bundle in Death and Rebirth and charge even more for the privilege)

the first 5 or so minutes of Symphogear GX are, without a doubt, some of the stupidest, dumbest and most ridiculous things I've seen in a cartoon. I approve heartily of the continuation of Symphogear norms and look forward to the rest of whatever bullshit Satelight comes up with, especially considering now they've thrown magic and evil robots into the mix. most importantly, this season's subtitle is Believe in Justice and Hold a Determination to Fist. everything is exactly as silly as I could have hoped for and the only knock against it is that it's being fansubbed instead of anyone being stupid enough to simulcast it.

edit: whoops now CR is simulcasting GX, which probably means they'll sub G too

Ushio and Tora - this is the most 90s show I've seen in a while and it's rad as fuck for it

Working!!! - this is the sequel to Working! and Working!!

Crowds insight - the critique of social networks is going to hit up the addition of themes of the price of unity and world peace and civilization and it should be fun. also, I should've watched the director's cut of the last episode of Crowds so I could know that Berg is living in Hajime's bust ahead of time

Wakaba Girl - short show about moe girls, not funny

My Wife is the Student Council President - why did i watch this again. not only is it not funny, I'm pretty sure what happens at the end of the first episode is straight up sexual assault. my god have mercy on the souls working on this and anyone who enjoys it.

Some legit entertainment that I don't have to have much guilt about enjoying (Ushio and Taro, GATE, CROWDS Insight and DBZ Super) and then I've got some of the best trash on offer this season (Monster Musume, Bikini Warriors and Student Council President).

Overlord is my prediction for surprise best show of the season.

The trash is especially ripe this summer. I'm not sure if I can come around fully to the art of Jitsu wa Watashi wa because the manga's art is so delightfully 2000s-webcomic by comparison I mean look at this:
