Has anyone seen the new Goro Miyazaki movie From Up On Poppy Hill? I heard his first movie Tales from Earthsea was terrible, but at least this one is written by his dad.

Yeah that was really abrupt.

This looks hysterical. Someone's going to tell me to read the manga but I don't want to:

Man, episode 51 of Saint Seiya Omega is something, Umakoshi went completely nuts with the animation/composition. Worth at least checking out the second half.

I really really enjoyed the Jojo audio-drama with the occasional animated segment. Despite the poor budget overall it really worked well. What are the chances it gonna reach post part 3 I wonder.

I'm sure it will reach Diamond is Not Crash, the Shonen Jump audience loves it.

Vento Aureo and Stone Ocean, though, hmm.

The jokes wears itself out pretty quickly, and, execution-wise, I didn't find the joke to be that funny in the first place.

The manga works a bit better as it has a lot more variety, but I wouldn't call it hilarious or anything...

The best part is that it's by the same persons that brought you Inferno Cop.

yah I saw that. I actually watched it last week but posting about it now that it's been brought up. the young animators project (I forgot what it's called) is cool but also confusing. I'm assuming with little witch academia that it has a lot of inexperienced animators getting to storyboard for the first time.

there were two other animations from this year's young animators thing that I wanted to watch but I've been too lazy to look up their names.

Rebuild of Evangelion 333 BR is coming out on april 24th

I am making the necessary preparations as we speak (got to hurry too because I've got 20 TV eps and four movies left to go in only 18 days plus however long it takes for fansubs to show up).

Please, don't feel you need to rush through the good part of Eva (the TV series) to watch the bad part of Eva (the new movies).

this was pretty okay. I think it suffers a bit from being an adaptation and sort of feels like two movies clumsily stitched together. the main plot at the beginning is a slobs vs. snobs kind of thing where students try to save a school building, but that turns into a subplot after the romance thread comes to the fore and (this is a huge spoiler, don't read if you wanna see it) flirts with an incest plot for a bit before going, no, they aren't related. the save-the-Latin Quarter House plot feels really Hollywood (there's even a fixing-up montage) and the romance feels really anime (on top of a lot of the movie being set at a school), but I can't tell if that's the fault of the direction or the story they were handed.

oh, and I guess the dub was pretty good.

it's mixed media, there's still lots of tasty hand animation

goddamn, Aku no Hana/Flowers of Evil

I am in love with how this show looks. not quite full-on rotoscope-y, but it comes off like a nightmarish version of reality while still feeling real. like, something is just a little off, but you can't put your finger on it and it fits it like a glove if the plot synopsis is any indication.

In news nobody in the US cares about, Saint Seiya Omega just went from innocuous show tangencially-related with Saint Seiya to full-on fanfic realm, basically by returning a bunch of the (surviving) original characters and adding one of the most obscure bits of SS trivia possible.

I don't know man I'm ten episodes deep and it has basically lost all sense of urgency to settle into monster of the week mode. I think Rebuild does a better job of conveying how all the personal stuff is happening against the backdrop of the massively fucked situation they're dealing with.

Teflon, you might want to give that opinion 3 more episodes.

Hey kids, it's time for bitter uncle Takashi views new season's first episodes:

Kakumeiki Valvrave - Starts boring, gets slightly interesting, completely flips out in the very last moment. Quality first ep, even if I doubt the rest will live up to it.

Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince - Looks like Gundam SEED except Captain Murrue now has ridiculous breasts. It's sorta-kinda-fun but unsure what they are going for, especially from the second episode.

Suisei no Gargantia - If you want a Production I.G. looking show with Production I.G. looking mecha, here it is. Not much to say, other than "it's not terrible", and speaking of that...

Hataraku Maou-sama! - It somehow survives the light novel borderline because the protagonist isn't particularly stoic and one can almost understand why he is likable.

Live a Date - On the other side, this is pretty all the worst parts of light novels wrapped into a single show and I doubt the original writer can actually hold a real world conversation.

Yuyushiki - Is there such a thing as a "breaking personal space" fetish? I think this show is about that. Also about puns and googling the web for science facts.

Aiura - This episode must have had more budget for animating girls legs than an entire JoJo season, despite nothing at all happening, so I'm guessing it's an KyoAni series.

Arata Kangatari - Hey look, it's erm, Fushigi Yuugi. With boys. And crossdressing. No wait, that's also FY. Anyway, there are swords, too.

Mushibugyou - The opening is really colorfull, albeit I'm not really sure of everything else.

Zettai Bouei Leviathan - No

And it goes to show how low our standards have come for anime when it's actually slightly refreshing to watch a cartoon about young adults working shitty low-wage jobs, even if it's drummed up in RPG trappings.

Yeah, uh, episode 11-14 is about the point where the show actually starts getting really good. Or rather, it's when Eva shows its true colors.

you realize this just makes me want to watch it and see how wretched it actually is

Majestic Prince so far can't seem to settle on a tone and it creates an awkward flow when it shifts from Anime High School Hijinks/satire of the military to serious real mecha war. however, I can't hate something that makes a joke about niconico on-screen comments work

Live A Date deserves props for starting a shitstorm between random ANN readers and ANN's editor Zac, man of fine tatse, to the point where he's going to have a debate podcast with a militant moe enthusiast.

maybe it's because I only listen to it intermittently, but the general guest choice seems to be pretty well done (including the CD interview jam and anytime Daryl Surat is on)

I just mainly find it hilarious that Live A Date was the show that pushed moe crowd overboard

The synopsis I read of this almost put me off because it sounded so formulaic, but the presentation alone is worthwhile.

I dreamed that I was reading an online article that was a critical and cynical analysis of the violent and militaristic themes present in Little Witch Academia. It was a long and thorough piece that I was only just getting into before I woke up, but now that I am awake I am somewhat dubious of its overall accuracy, because while I have yet to set aside time to watch the animation in question, I am fairly sure it is not actually set in Bosnia.

Valvrave powers up after reaching 666 heat and committing harakiri

Just saw Eva 3.33.

On one side, it's exactly what I expected. On the other side, it's not entertaining at all.

The best part that is the (obviously fake) preview for the next movie that animates like something out of Straight Title.

Yeah but then it takes back the one thing I really didn't expect the first episode to do: (killing the love interest) and it veers right into angst territory.

I've already moved past expecting a genre-defining and/or defying experience

instead, I'm ready for more Devil Satan's 666 Demon Robot tearing apart robot boxes while dude who survived a gunshot to the eye screams possibly the most awkward name for a fictional character in Japanese media to pronounce with the trappings of Anime Highschool and more Not-Gundam hijinks

of the three mecha shows this season, it's definitely the weakest, but also the craziest and therefore the most entertaining
