In 1977, Anglia Television ran a "spoof" documentary called Alternative 3. The premise was that the intellectual elite, mathematicians, scientists &c. had been vanishing for many years and a blind eye was being turned. The documentary sought to investigate the reason; the mysterious Alternative 3, a conspiracy which recruited (or kidnapped) the best and brightest of the world's intelligencia in order to propagate a new society off-world.

While it was marketed as a hoax (originally going to be run on April 1st), some have begun to see this as someone out there trying to get the truth out. Maybe they are.

Oddly nobody's been particularly interested in looking into the vast number of botanists and entomologists who've disappeared over the last decade or so.

I mean; if you were terraforming a planet into a breathable atmosphere, wouldn't you need plants and insects?

Considering the program has been banned from a re-release; makes you wonder...

You can see it here. Music by Brian Eno, for those who cares, and can be found on his Music for Films album.

Peter Watkin's The War Game, a 1965 docu-drama about England in the midst of a Soviet nuclear attack. It's essential viewing for pretty much anyone. Not only a good sign of British film-making at its best, but a powerful film, which still holds controversy even today, and anything that pisses off those apologist BBC arseholes is good in my book.

The authors could have ben forced at gunpoint!

Either way, watch it. Then watch The War Game, because that one is practically essential viewing. Most intense 50 viewing minutes you're likely to have in a while.

"If I decide to hit, and perhaps kill, another man, myself... Then I must be prepared to accept the moral responsibility.

If I give the government the right, or the means, on my behalf, to kill people of another country... Then the situation is no different."

The acted sobbing and screaming is keeping me from suspending disbelief, but it's very important nonetheless.

I didn't have a problem with the acting, to be honest, but I tend to be very forgiving about it when watching docu-fictions or cinéma vérité for some reason. I'd make more of a fuss about it if it was pure fiction.

It helps to keep in mind that this was made during the Cold War, and is based almost entirely on documented facts and reactions, social or otherwise (Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the two obvious sites Watkins studied the most).

I prefer it to Threads in any case, though that show was far from bad in itself.

Chris Marker's La Jetée. Nothing more needs to be said.

For those not in the know, this was later remade/reinvented by Terry Gilliam into the brilliant 12 Monkeys.

P.S. Play catch the reference with David Bowie's Jump They Say video.

Sadder than watching a puppy try to lick a dead kitten back to life. And the puppy has cancer.

To make up for that poor display, some Chris Morris goodness:

Brass Eye is a mini-series spoofing sensationalist news documentaries. It manages to be subtle in its humour while still being utterly confrontational and in-your-face.

It caused a lot of controversy, especially in tabloid press, as it was accused of being immoral, even though its jokes served to highlight how exploitative and manipulative journalism was. Even funnier though, and to further illustrate the point, many of the sketches involved known British celebrities, politicians and other talking heads, who not knowing any better and not bothering to research the subject matter brought up, got shown for the fools they were. Later, of course, they'd claim they were tricked, when it was their fault they wanted some screen time. Memorably enough, one sketch in the Drugs episode led to an MP wanting to pass a bill against it at the House of Parliament, even though the drug never existed. In a sense, the series was essential to satirise the hysteria of modern journalism.

I've found a few full episodes on occasion, so here they are in chronological order: Animals, Drugs, Science, Sex and Decline. I couldn't find it in full, but here's a sketch or two from Crime and the full 2001 Paedophilia Special (Which raised loads of controversy as you might expect) divided in three parts.

Don't worry if you don't recognise the celebrities or politicians; neither do I. The point of their untrustworthiness is made either way. Chris Morris also worked on a similar show called The Day Today a few years beforehand, but I think Brass Eye is better personally.

Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision

In 1978, the BBC attempted following cheap yankee motherfucker Hunter S. Thompson across the American landscape. This is the result. Allegedly part of the special features on certain DVD printings of Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Also the first time the plans for Thompson's funerary cannon were revealed publicly.

This guy is an epic comedian if I've ever seen one.

No offence intended, but it's ever so rare to encounter an American with such a massive sense of sarcasm and irony in the realms of black humour.

Start your way from the first and work your way up.

A Bill Burroughs documentary, circa 1984.

Dodgy quality, but fine viewing regardless.

Home

Gerald, on the final day of his convalescence after a devastating car accident, decides to give up on the outside world and, using a video diary, see how long he can last as a hermit, locked in his home, surviving on what foodstuffs are available.

Hour-long adaptation of the J.G. Ballard short The Enormous Space. Should appeal to fans of House of Leaves.

Here are all six episodes of The Day Today, the show that Chris Morris played a part of before making Brass Eye. I consider the latter more biting, but this is still one funny as Hell mini-series:

Episode 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

the Crime episode of Brass Eye has found its way on GoogleVideo, I've found. It's one of my favourites, so highly recommended.

Paedogeddon is also up there in full.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a 2004 comedy mini-series which most blatantly takes the piss out of the likes of Stephen King, especially Kingdom Hospital. Everything down to the film quality feels like an early 80s budget B-series. The show is ostensibly a retrospective on Garth Marenghi's televison oeuvre, a series called Darkplace, set in the eponymous hospital, and revolves around Dr. Rick Dagless, a blatant self-insertion of the author, ex-warlock, Falklands and Vietnam vet, and now a renowned doctor who fights the forces of supernatural evil.

Here are all six episodes, in order:

1. Once Upon A Beginning
2. Hell Hath Fury
3. Skipper the Eyechild
4. The Apes of Wrath
5. Scotch Mist
6. The Creeping Moss from the Shores of Shuggoth

No, it's a lying piece of shit - with extra OH GOD I WANT TO BONE THE CLINTONS SO BAD flavour - as usual.

THE UK AND FRANCE ARE THE PROMISED LAND! THE NHS ISN'T A FUCKING MURDEROUS SHAMBLES AT ALL AND EVERYONE IS HAPPY TO LIVE UNDER THE AUSPICES OF SOCIALIST WANKERY FOR OVER 25 YEARS! JUST ASK THE KIDS IN RUNDOWN HOUSING PROJECTS AROUND PARIS!

Not to mention that whole I SAVED THIS GUY THAT HATES ME'S WIFE! I'M SUCH A HERO!

Fuck right off. That man deserves nothing less than to stay a parasite in his parents' basement, but the fickle masses' dollars have spoken.

If people in this world could read, they'd be outraged.

That's like saying Jack Chick tracts should be taken seriously because, Hell, so long as religion gets some sort of exposure, right?

That sort of logic is why your education system is completely fucked up, as are your politics.

Oh wait, that applies to everywhere in Europe, UK included. And why we're all heading on our merry way to getting raped in the name of the European Union.

Carry on, then, citizen!
