Guys you know I have a 99.5% save file for VR Missions. I think the only one I'm missing is the one where you have to destroy a wall at the end of the course to get to the checkpoint but it's snowing so the enemy patrol can easily follow you and spot you before you have a chance to do it. _________________

All right, that's the Solid arc down. Yes, I shed a tear at "She was a true patriot."
Now, I think I'll tackle the two classics; the "Outer Heaven" arc, if you will. I know most people have a fair amount of problems with them, but from what I've played I think they're the most charming games of the series, perhaps after Solid 1. |
Play "Ghost Babel". |

So I never finished MGS3 when it came out, or when I picked up Subsistence. I'm right near the end now, though, and my opinion for the game has drastically improved! I think that after the fight with The Fear the game constantly improves itself.
I've also been playing MGS1 and VR Missions on my PSP on and off the past couple weeks. I still prefer the way those games worked, with huge boxy environments and more of a puzzle feel to the level design.
I might actually manager to finish off MGS2 in time at this rate. |

yes, definitely. It is solid up to that point, but afterwards is pretty much a constant stream of set-pieces and interesting situations. Up until then you had the brickhouse, after The Fear you have the rest of the game. I think it was also around that time that I had all of the game's systems figured out, so that helped too. |

I'm playing mgs: portable ops at the moment. Well, I kind of am, when I have enough time. I've technically made no progress so far because I've been caught about three times in the prologue-esque part of the game (After breaking out of jail and talking to Roy Campbell).
It's really, really hard. Mainly because of the controls. |

i didn't get on with portable ops at all. the controls & camera are shocking and this does not endear its grinding structure to me one bit.
i started a game of twin snakes tonight and just stopped after vulcan raven because i can't be dealing with the backtracking keycard bit right now. i know i defended the game earlier in this thread but man i don't remember the voice acting being this bad? it's really stilted and weird, the original sounds a lot more natural for some reason.
plus, yeah, the cutscenes are dumb.
i hope i haven't had blind nostalgic feelings for a remake, that'd be really depressing. _________________

yeah i got it around when it came out, though i was only 13 or so.
i got twin snakes with my gamecube and thought it was awesome, probably because i hadn't played the original in a while.
i don't know, metal gear solid is easily one of my favourite games of all time whatever the version, but this playthrough of twin snakes was sortof disheartening. i think i've conflated the better qualities of each in my mind. _________________

I'm replaying the PSX original at the moment as a matter of fact, and yes, it is amazing.
The PS2's texture smoothing option makes the game look real nice. Just don't turn on faster loading (not that you really need to) or the graphics glitch up at spots.
I'm going for the Otacon ending this time around, since I've never gotten it and wouldn't mind screwing around with the stealth camo anyway. I feel like a jerk for letting Meryl die though. :( |

| Played a bit more of the first game on my PSP last night. I must have played this game way too many times because I remember every room, every hiding spot, and every sentence-becomes-a-question in the dialog. |

skelethulu I am currently in the process of getting the custom firmware on my psp, and mgs will be the first game I play! Oh, and mgs: portable ops isn't too bad at all. I'm actually having a lot of fun with it.
I have been listening to some interviews with the voice-actors, lately! This podcast with david hayter was pretty interesting (the distracting music at the start goes away eventually! Also, listen as his voice slowly becomes more snake-like throughout the second video). This sort of thing might be old news, though, but I'm really excited by it. After playing so much mgs and attaching hayter's voice to the video-game persona of snake only, well, I guess it's just kind of surreal for me. Can anyone direct me in the way of more of this kind of stuff? Hayter seems to be the only voice-actor from the game who is truly involved in his character, let alone the actual game.
Also, I suppose this is sort of cool:

Make sure to use popsloader to load up pops version 3.72, as the latest firmware seems to cause some serious skipping in the cutscenes for MGS. Just ask around if you can't figure out how to set that up.
Also, I think MGS 1 works much better on the PSP than portable ops, since all the areas are designed for you to be able to see everything without controlling the camera. |

yeah, which is why the decision to give portable ops the camera from subsistence is completely inexplicable. honestly, i have no idea what they were thinking, they could easily have made a perfectly playable game based on MGS2's control system. _________________

I still stand by my AB.net review. One star. I think after playing something like Ghost Babel (which is a solid, meaty game with consistent mechanics and shit) first, the PS game (which is a series of boss battles sandwiched between not much and some lovably botched cutscenes) I've been disposed against how superfical it is.
MGS2 I liked the cutscenes a lot. It was the game I couldn't dig. |

| I just played VR Missions for the first time over the weekend. It's pretty fucking great. I replayed the final Nikita mission a couple of times (~250 rounds) and it was frustrating in an almost good way. The rest wasn't nearly as hard, but it was all very satisfying. It's really interesting to see a game that takes an older game's mechanics to the limits. |

| i do a no kill extreme difficulty mgs3 speedrun, my best segmented time was 2 hours, and 3 hours non-segmented. i find no alerts and/or european extreme to be not nearly as fun. i'm shooting for around 3 hours segmented right now (saving a bit more than my old best), just for fun, not too serious. currently at 23 minutes saved at the pain. the pain is really really hard to beat fast though, i will probably save again right after when i do it. :( |

I escaped graniny gorki with no alerts and also escaped the torture room with no alerts :D
but it was on normal.
on this run I have only killed 2 people. well, and all the bosses.
one of the kills was because I accidentally dragged a tranq'd guard too close to an electric fence. _________________

Hey guys, I havent posted in a while, but have been lurking and wanted to chime in on MGS here.
I dont own a PS3, but totally plan on enjoying 4 over at Booji's place. Anyways, Booji has been saying that we need to play through at least MGS 2 and 3 since I have never finished them, so we have been playing through 3, which I think so far I think this game is absolutely hilarious.
So my wife is a vegan, and usually when she watches me play games, she doesnt want me to kill animals if it can be avoided(like the dogs and birds in the Resident Evil games), and since we are playing MGS3 at my place, we are playing 'Vegan Gear Solid', which is pretty funny since we have subsisted mainly on mushrooms of different sorts, most of which Snake thinks are nasty, or they are poisonous. Its my first time with this game, but its hilarious how often Snakes growling stomach alerts the enemy. Its tough being a vegan spy.
So I hope MGS4 is as mock serious as the rest. |

So guys, a question if I may; what do you actually think mgs4 will be like? It might seem like a bit of a berated question, but it's only like a week away now, and I don't remember the last time I have genuinely been looking forward to a new release this much.
Will it live up to the expectations? |

There aren't many beehives available to eat during the course of the game, however they are debatably not-vegan, and another thing I have to question is why you're constantly going hungry as there's a fucking vast quantity of fruits available to eat at any given time. _________________

| I am kind of disappointed in Kojima that there wasn't a VR Missions for MGS4. I saw the swamp area with the ropes and the water and the gator hat and I knew: MGS4's VR Missions were going to be epic. |

It was mostly in the beginning, we could only find mushrooms pretty much, and we got next to no stamina from them. Plus we were having a ton of fun running around with the crocodile head on and a growling stomach. |

I think an [insert mainstream press source here] preview mentioned that the in-game menu has some kind of "virtual range" mode that allows you to test weapons in a VR training-style environment. Going to find that now. (of course this isn't a very good substitute for hundreds of distinct VR missions, but they might do something cool with it, like put in a boss rush mode or one of those "Zako Survival" levels.)
edit: ;_;

| out of the blue, but i haven't seen it discussed in the thread yet. what did people think of metal gear solid 3 making them pull the trigger on the boss? i hope this hasn't been glorified enough to have turned it into the "companion cube" of snake eater, or whatever. mostly curious because i finished writing an article, and had a harder time dissecting that part than any other. odd, with how simple of a design decision it is. still, it's interesting how it causes players to halt an action they were doing moments before with wild abandon. i can't think of too many other games that invoke such a switch of consciousness on the player. |
