Thank you for agreeing to participate and taking the time to fill out this survey. This is an ethnographic exploration of the experiences of the Insert Credit user community and the forums and their closure.
No names or identifying characteristics will be used in the final ethnographic report. The survey should take 10 to 20 minutes of your time - please answer the questions as honestly and completely as possible. I have left space at the end of the survey for respondents to insert any additional information they feel is relevant to their experiences. I may also contact respondents with some brief follow-up questions.
If you have any questions or concerns about the study please don’t hesitate to contact me.
The final report will be available to all participants. Thank you very much for your time.
A fresh copy of this document is available at:
http://dhex.org/cuny/ethnography/IC/oconnor-ICsurvey.doc
i just want to stress that i am very interested in the experience of all users, regardless of posting involvement. again, if you have any questions please feel free to email me at the above address. thank you. |

This was useful to me in remembering when I first registered; it may or may not be to you. This is the (I believe) largest iteration, and what many people would call the canonical instance, of the forums.

Hmm. My original IC avatar says "8 April 2004", which means I registered exactly one week before Mr. Toups.
Say, exactly when did the old forums close? I'd like to know how much time elapsed between my last post on the old forums and my first post on the new ones. _________________ JSNLV is frequently and intentionally wrong. |

Oh lord, I've already written a lot. 10 or 20 minutes my day-glo white ass. I've got one question left: 10) What did you like about the IC forums?
I'm gonna break and ponder that for a bit. _________________

Please post the survey in a format that everyone can open, instead of the proprietary M$-Word format. I can help you with the HTML, if you want, should you decide to convert it to a HTML page. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

1) That doesn't change the fact that the survey is in a proprietary format.

Jesus, get the hell over it. You aren't 'fighting the man' or anything here, you're just being an annoying douche. This isn't slashdot, either contribute something or stop bitching. |

Clearly there are no other applications in all of Linux World which are capable of opening a .doc. Luckily, us Windows users get WordPad, which opens it and also converts it into a different format. _________________

survey in RTF format
I can sympathize because I'm on Win98 and for some stupid reason Wordpad on here is NOT forwards-compatible with more recent Wordpad and .doc files, it's really annoying. So ironically I'm using OpenOffice here. |

It's not so much that I can't sympathize with him as it is that I find his attitude extremely off-putting and bitchy. |

In what way am I being an annoying douche? I politely asked for an open version. Nothing more, nothing less.
If this is just because I use a dollar sign instead of a normal S, well, there are more important things to get upset about. I will choose how I write my messages.
Thank you haze and dhex for your understanding.

I just think the whole M$ thing is incredibly juvenile and it's not the level of discourse that I want to have around these parts. whatever, though.

There really is no reason to be a douche (you were!) about these things; we all know as much as you do about them and we're all on the same page - but we don't let it interfere with Getting Things Done. This is not one of the places where you need to take a play-it-dumb approach to evangelizing for FOSS, or against closed file formats. You could have been far more constructive by using any of the above (or the editor you no doubt already have installed) to convert the .doc to a less heinous filetype and posted it as an alternative.
Thanks to such tools, .doc really is a format that everyone can open, and pretending it isn't is entirely unnecessary here!
Patsy, you should have converted it to OOXML for the lulz ;_; |

You still fail to explain why you think I was being a douche in the first place. Stop making excuses. A closed format is a closed format, and I asked for an open format, which was provided.
By the way, unlike what you people seem to assume, I don't use GNU/Linux. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

You probably weren't, all that much, really. Everybody's happy, now, anyway.
Just, in the future, if someone posts a .doc again, you really can make your own ODF or RTF or TXT out of it without pasting a FOSS snob form letter. Google Docs can do this with no installation on your own machine! |

These words scream to many of us, "Look at me! I hate Microsoft software because it's not 'open!' Rather than take simple steps to convert or open the document on my own and perhaps provide the converted file for others who may share my disdain for the format, I shall ask for someone else to do it for me while taking a stab at The Borg by using a dollar sign instead of an S! Boy, that'll show Bill Gates!" _________________

What? No. I mean... the date of the forum closure. The IC Forum archive has posts from November 24 of 2006, if not later; it's hard to tell whether I've found the last post or not. I just hoped somebody knew the exact date. _________________ JSNLV is frequently and intentionally wrong. |
