*sigh* You people seem to like labelling people as douchebags as soon as they twitch even one nerve of yours.
| Quote: |
| These words scream to many of us, "Look at me! I hate Microsoft software because it's not 'open!' Rather than take simple steps to convert or open the document on my own and perhaps provide the converted file for others who may share my disdain for the format, I shall ask for someone else to do it for me while taking a stab at The Borg by using a dollar sign instead of an S! Boy, that'll show Bill Gates!" |
In other words, you're calling me a douchebag because of your own interpretation of what I said? Now that's being a douchebag.
I asked the author of the survey to convert it because:
-If I would convert it myself it would discredit my own "it's not open" point
-It would be a third-party version instead of a first-party one
It also sounds like you think the Microsoft hate is unjustified and that a closed format is no big deal. It's not. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Or when they act like douchebags, give us some credit.

If you can cite me a credible source who has elaborated on his interpretation of your writings, I will consider enfolding his opinion into my own, but until then who else's interpretation should I use?

We know! We know. That's why it's snobby, silly and obtuse.

Why not say that creating your own version would be a first-party production? It would be you doing the save-as instead of someone else!

I have a pretty good handle on our compupolitical leanings around here - again - we are fully aware of everything you are and probably more. We are perhaps simply a bit further along in our journey - some of us have most likely been bashing OOXML for at least three months now, which takes more skill since it's pretty open.
Whining about .doc is nowhere near the front line of your crusade - convert it using bastions of FOSS ideals, pick yourself up, and march forward towards the real conflict, if that's your perogative.
Basically, pick your battles. The .doc battle is an incredibly douchebaggy battle to pick! (In the grand scheme of things it's a legacy format that we have almost complete mastery over!)
It's not even a case of you preaching to the choir; it's a case of you preaching to the choir who saw you poking the nun in the confessional last week and doesn't even care!
P.S.

The site started in 2002 right?
The amount of forum incarnations has been confusing me lately, because people are talking as if they were 3. Where I was led to believe there were 4. I joined on the 3rd version, which started in October 2003. The 4th and final version was started on July-August 2005. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

What? No. I mean... the date of the forum closure. The IC Forum archive has posts from November 24 of 2006, if not later; it's hard to tell whether I've found the last post or not. I just hoped somebody knew the exact date. |

Yes, even Baron Patsy! However, I don't really like resorting to internet dick-waving or being snotty about petty little things. Sorry if I am not as blatant as you apparently would like me to be about my 1nt3rn3tz cr3d.

thanks, psiga.
i'm going to be contacting people with followups shortly (hopefully by this weekend, depending on work/job search concerns) but i am also going to be contacting a random sampling of some folks to request a "real time" gmail chat (or aim or whatever) interview.
thanks again to everyone who has responded. i appreciate the effort. and there's still time for anyone else who wants to submit, i'm not going to close off extra entries for a few more weeks, minimum. |

hey all, just about done processing everything; i'd like to do some more gmail chat (gchat?) interviews with people, so if anyone's interested (nights and weekends are pretty much it as far as availability, so 7PM EST onward figure) drop me a line at moconnor23 AT gmail DoT com and we can set something up.
and if anyone has any surveys not yet done, it's not too late to hand things in; i've only just started writing my outlines and methodology bits.
and thanks again for all of the responses. this has been very insightful and interesting. |

Not to be overly anal about details, but wasn't it 7chan, rather than 4chan, that provoked the invasion? It's probably not going to matter to those who will evaluate the paper, but, you know...
Edit: In the part where you mention the subforums, you say there are six but only name five, disregarding the axe. The last sentence in that paragraph is messed up, too.
Edit-2: Page 10, last paragraph: the sentence in parentheses about Internet memes is missing an "are".
Edit-3: A good read. Everything was clearly argumented without any ambiguity and it served its purpose well. I found the "Implications for Business and Industry" part particularly interesting. _________________

Sorry I didn't send in my survey to this, dhex, as school kinda kicked my ass for the past couple of months. However, this is quite interesting, and I think a pretty good examination of the end of IC. I'm hopeful that more people around here will read this, and keep in mind some of the bad shit that went down at IC near the end.
Interesting to now, aside to all this, but mentioned in some other threads, is that I for one read the IC frontpage a lot more often now. OF course, this probably has a lot to do with the constant strema of updates on it now, but is probably also tied to not being in the forums there as well. |

quck shot - good catch. thanks. i dumped it off into my "scratch" doc for editing (because my wife is evil and made me change the word order) and didn't put it back in. and no one caught that.
there's probably a few dozen other mistakes in there that i just lost in the past week or so.
note: the updated pdf is 10x the size of the original. word file to pdf on a mac is super fucked up. it's still less than 1mb though. |

-Second paragraph, first sentence, you have "to note" twice. If I catch anything else while I'm reading it I'll let you know. You've probably already fixed it, though!
-This particularly struck me in THEMES AND ANALYSIS, but you're using "they" instead of "he" sometimes for the third person singular, which is admirably PC of you but unnecessary since you already identified all of your respondants as male. May as well be technically correct if you aren't backed into a corner.
-Last sentence before CONCLUSION: "savage?"
Well written and well presented, dhex. Thanks for sharing with us. |
