This was useful to me in remembering when I first registered; it may or may not be to you. This is the (I believe) largest iteration, and what many people would call the canonical instance, of the forums.

In what way am I being an annoying douche? I politely asked for an open version. Nothing more, nothing less.
If this is just because I use a dollar sign instead of a normal S, well, there are more important things to get upset about. I will choose how I write my messages.
Thank you haze and dhex for your understanding.

There really is no reason to be a douche (you were!) about these things; we all know as much as you do about them and we're all on the same page - but we don't let it interfere with Getting Things Done. This is not one of the places where you need to take a play-it-dumb approach to evangelizing for FOSS, or against closed file formats. You could have been far more constructive by using any of the above (or the editor you no doubt already have installed) to convert the .doc to a less heinous filetype and posted it as an alternative.
Thanks to such tools, .doc really is a format that everyone can open, and pretending it isn't is entirely unnecessary here!
Patsy, you should have converted it to OOXML for the lulz ;_; |

You probably weren't, all that much, really. Everybody's happy, now, anyway.
Just, in the future, if someone posts a .doc again, you really can make your own ODF or RTF or TXT out of it without pasting a FOSS snob form letter. Google Docs can do this with no installation on your own machine! |

| *sigh* You people seem to like labelling people as douchebags as soon as they twitch even one nerve of yours. |
Or when they act like douchebags, give us some credit.

| In other words, you're calling me a douchebag because of your own interpretation of what I said? |
If you can cite me a credible source who has elaborated on his interpretation of your writings, I will consider enfolding his opinion into my own, but until then who else's interpretation should I use?

I asked the author of the survey to convert it because:
-If I would convert it myself it would discredit my own "it's not open" point |
We know! We know. That's why it's snobby, silly and obtuse.

| -It would be a third-party version instead of a first-party one |
Why not say that creating your own version would be a first-party production? It would be you doing the save-as instead of someone else!

| It also sounds like you think the Microsoft hate is unjustified and that a closed format is no big deal. It's not. |
I have a pretty good handle on our compupolitical leanings around here - again - we are fully aware of everything you are and probably more. We are perhaps simply a bit further along in our journey - some of us have most likely been bashing OOXML for at least three months now, which takes more skill since it's pretty open.
Whining about .doc is nowhere near the front line of your crusade - convert it using bastions of FOSS ideals, pick yourself up, and march forward towards the real conflict, if that's your perogative.
Basically, pick your battles. The .doc battle is an incredibly douchebaggy battle to pick! (In the grand scheme of things it's a legacy format that we have almost complete mastery over!)
It's not even a case of you preaching to the choir; it's a case of you preaching to the choir who saw you poking the nun in the confessional last week and doesn't even care!
P.S.

If you use Windows (or AmigaOS4) I'll laugh at you but please don't take this opportunity to extol the virtues of Solaris or the GameBoy OS or anything. |

| You can go look in the relevant TGQ threads or wait until this evening when I can look it up on my laptop. |

-Second paragraph, first sentence, you have "to note" twice. If I catch anything else while I'm reading it I'll let you know. You've probably already fixed it, though!
-This particularly struck me in THEMES AND ANALYSIS, but you're using "they" instead of "he" sometimes for the third person singular, which is admirably PC of you but unnecessary since you already identified all of your respondants as male. May as well be technically correct if you aren't backed into a corner.
-Last sentence before CONCLUSION: "savage?"
Well written and well presented, dhex. Thanks for sharing with us. |
