You think thats bad. I cant play Flimbo's Quest still as I was so afraid of the boss of stage 3 when I was a kid. I can barley even bring myself to play it again today (Plus the controls are pretty sticky and awkward these days) _________________

probably "Ka"
you were a mosquito who tried to suck blood from a family, gameplay kind of like pilotwings/starfox. ultimately kind of fun, but levels like "daughter in the bathroom" made it what it was. |

I've just realised Drakengard also references Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné novels, namely with the characters of Arioch and Verdelet.
In the novels, Arioch is Elric's patron chaos deity, Verdelet is a throwaway reference in one spell invocation. _________________

i'd say we need a good Elric game except i don't think we need any more games about albinos with soul-stealing swords

Weird Beat'em up for Super Famicom, there's a button that has no other function then to pose your character (choose the strong guy to do some bodybuilding moves).
Flying maui heads with tiny people on it.
There's also a enemy that consist of 1 sprite, dies in 1 hit, vibrates to slowly move to you but can't attack you...
oh yeah and that boss character injecting his liquid into you...

I'd have to say Yume Nikki, but I really loved that game, so I may have a biased opinion on how "fucked up" it is. The one-man development team and all the incredibly obscure secrets in it make it a good candidate, though.
Also, LSD for the PS1. I've never played it, but it looks pretty bizarre.

Nanashi no Game, Square's new DS horror game, seems pretty crazy too.

I loved that game! :D But there's a boss you can't kill. Impossible. A weird eye with a laser beam. You can't hit, you can't do any damage, but it kills you with one shot. And you need to make mixed salads to heal you, made by the enemies bonus ups. And the playboy bunnies... LOL. I loved that game. |

Touching back on the Drackengard soundtrack, Nobuyoshi Sano was recently interviewed by Game Set Watch about the Nintendo DS Korg DS-10 and the Drackengard soundtrack was brought up. This is good stuff since I figured he'd never be asked about it ever again.
| GameSetWatch wrote: |
GSW: At EXTRA you performed your electronic software live, but for the game Drakengard you took live orchestral music and treated it electronically. Seeing as the two musical ideas seem like inverses of the other, was it in your mind at all during EXTRA?
Sano: These projects were similar in the sense that no one had ever done them before. The beauty of exploration through music was an important motivation on both.
GSW: The amount of interest that listeners have expressed in your music with Takayuki Aihara for Drakengard appears only to have increased with time. What was the kernel of the idea behind it and do you have any interest in taking this unique musical experiment further in the future?
Sano: In a way, I was interested in working on a musical concept I had heard explored by the Chemical Brothers. They had used the sounds of the guitar and reconstructed it through techno. Quite often you find that the use of the guitar is implicitly prohibited in techno. Observing this idea, I thought about applying a techno design to reconstructing orchestral music.
The game Drakengard revolved around the concept of the player being overwhelmend by opponents that must be defeated, complemented by a storyline that grows chaotically out of proportion as it progresses. I tried to express that in the music, but for the player that expected a traditional RPG music style, it was disappointing. They complained of it being repetitive and grating. Some of the criticism was, let's say, very harsh.
However, more recently I have begun to receive a number of positive comments from listeners, as you just mentioned. Although the soundtrack is still rather niche, it is gratifying to see more and more game players' opinions resonating with the composers' original intentions. For my own personal feelings, I still like the originality and the intensity of the music. If someone were to ask me to return to this style, especially if it were for a film score, I'd put everything else on hold and focus all of my attention on it. It's gratifying to have the chance to talk about the soundtrack again, since it has after all received negative feedback in certain circles. |

Kingdom Hearts is seriously screwed up. I've only played to the part where Sora and Squall jump out of the window in the hotel, but it's seriously creepy unlike any other game. The way the music is this weird drone in the background, the way when you talk to Selphie and Tidus and battle them you suddenly pop up on the beach, the way Sora moves, the way Sora's movement feels (floaty), the way Sora has these fantasies about Kairi eating fruit, the way Sora's mom is only referenced once and then quite possibly dies.
I'd give it 2 stars out of 5. |

Archipelagos creeped me out a bit as a kid, its about these plants infecting the world and the red creeps out from them, as the island gets more and more infected the sky gets redder.

That is probably the best "congratulations on shooting that guy in the head" music ever.
In fact I think that's going to be one of the things I'm going to have to write down and remember to slip into a game somewhere |

I think I want to change my answer to fairly obscure Treasure game "FreakOut" (Stretch Panic in the US), in which you play as a young girl by the name of Linda, who plays the Cinderella to her twelve sisters who were apparently pretty nice people until they suddenly became beauty-obsessed narcissists. As the story goes, one day a mysterious truck nearly kills our young protagonist as she makes her way home one day from shopping for creams and lotions and such rubbish, then goes on to quickly deliver a package to her sisters. It turns out to be a magic doorway that leads to a demonic realm, where they are possessed by demons that transform each of them into their image of perfection. When Linda arrives home, the door mocks her and dares her to rescue her sisters, which makes her dive through the door to the rescue, upon which her tatty old scarf then her Dad gave her and that she always wears because wub is possessed by a demon that can stretch and deform the physical form of, erm, apparently anything. LINDA TO THE RESCUE~
Here's a poor quality video that I managed to find on YouTube! You damage enemies by pinching their weak spot with the scarf, then stretching and snapping it. You use the right stick to move the scarf around the screen, and R1 sends it forward where it will automatically pinch anything it comes into contact with.
It's essentially a boss rush with delays, meaning the game makes you leap into small worlds inhabited by 'Boniita', which are young women who "...wished that a certain part of their body was augmented." You kill these young ladies by pinching their bottoms and in turn earn points, which are used to access boss fights.
It's creepy. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

I have got past Level 3 before, The rest of the levels are quite good if a good bit more creepy and full of horrible enemies that also scared me shitless through childhood (The flying dog on level 5 made me shiver when I watched the video below) but the whole art direction in the C64 version is like the bastard child of Harryhausen and Giger compared to the more cartoony and "Soft" Amiga version. So through the magic of youtube...
C64 version:

Woah I'm glad my experience is only with the Amiga one, the C64 version is completely different. Much prefer the weird sea side coral world to the underground torture room.
Love the Amiga one, beautiful graphics and music also I've only just noticed on the title screen the little computer screen hes typing on actually mimics the text correctly great attention to detail.

The Amiga version is a diffrent beast. I was really shocked when I saw it since the whole tone and design is a lot lighter and cartoony on the Amiga version and the creature design is pretty restrained (Probably helps that you can actually see what the enemies are meant to be). Im not sure if it was deliberate or the limitations of the C64 made System 3 rethink what they were doing when converting it. Its an interesting case anyway.
Also, If you check the Amiga video I posted. The thing I was talking about is at 16:00. Except Its about 5 times Bigger, looks more horrible and has really creepy looking jerky animation in the C64 version. Also, a massive shiver went up my spine when I saw it. Thanks childhood memories. _________________

i bought this because it was Treasure but traded it in because it was crappy and dreepy. you can find copies in aus now. the mechanics are really irritating but they could have been something great. i think they were meant to be used in a Tiny Toons game
