Okay after I purchase it, I'll post my details... _________________

I see you guys playing MGS4:SotP *all the time*, but I'm still having a bitchass time playing a game with any of you.
Sneaking around is really fun! Let's do it together. And slit each others' throats. _________________ interdimensional |

Goddammit Konami. I finally was online and available when someone else was playing some MGO (Adilegian) and it turns out that everyone and their brother has moved on to playing the update. Which I can't buy because Konami won't accept my credit card. The PSN will though, just adding to the frustration that Konami's own little shopping experiment is a nightmare. After two days of trying to get them to take my $12 I think I'll pass on the expansion. It probably isn't worth $12 anyway. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

I feel kind of cheated because a few weeks after buying the expansion, literally 90% of all games are playing TDM M.M./dust all the time :(
The Weekend Survival Mode is pretty worth it though, in my opinion. The official rules are just so much better than the 99min 99tix slogs common to the free matches, and most of the people playing have good communication too. I wish I could remember to play during that three-hour window that it's up more often. _________________ "sometimes i'm just so glad i married you!" |

The thing about the expansion is that you're not actually downloading any new content. The cash exchange just unlocks content already on your PS3. You actually downloaded the content when you updated to Version 1.11 (or whatever MGO's up to now).
At least, that's what it looks like from my POV. I sure didn't go through any download times when I purchased the expansion. _________________

Ashura and I experimented with a voice chat server-client program called Ventrillo. The audio is much clearer than what you get over MGO, you aren't muted when someone throws a Chaff, and you don't hit PS3's firmware update below the belt with bandwidth demands that induce lag.
Anyone else game for trying this? _________________

Christ Almighty. Just a warning to anyone who wants to play this, set aside half a day to go through Konami's bass ackward registration system. Why the fuck does my Game ID have to be different than my Konami ID? Why can't I use the same password for both? Could this be any worse?
Metal Gear Online: Showing us all why XBox Live is totally worth it.
BTW, my Game ID is "live_is_better" (cause XORDYH was apparently too short) and my character name is "XORDYH". I get home late during the week, but I'll be around on the weekends if anyone wants to play some. I don't have the expansion yet though. |

I don't know, man. I think I'd rather have a service that's harder to sign up for and plagued with server traffic problems than have to deal with even a quarter of the complete numskulls that Xbox Live attracts. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

I've found that numskulls are plenty no matter what service you are on. It's more a factor of the individual games that dictates the human:asshole ratio. |

I think I would enjoy playing this with you guys sometime. My brother and I share a character named Fish-Man, and his PSN ID is something weird, I can't check right now. Maybe I should make my own ID.
And yeah, no expansion here either. |

I wonder why this game isn't more popular especially amongst this SB crowd. It's super tense and skillful, and the levels are all thoughtfully designed. It's like the anti-Bro game* war game.

I called it quits after playing on a regular basis. Can't play with any SB folks, shitty community (on the Euro servers at least), and team stacking because "but we're a claaaaaaaaaan~ ;_;" are but a few of the reasons. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

I really would have liked to get into this. But between Konami not accepting my credit card for the expansions and having to rank up to join SB games I just lost interest. _________________ The King of America

| Hm? There's no level cap unless it's defined by the person who made the room. It actually only goes the other way around. After you're level 5 or 6 you can't go into beginner servers anymore. |

Konami didn't accept my credit card when I put my APT# in, but after I took it out I was good. Try signing up for it online.
Also, ranking up is silly and unnecessary. Getting high skills don't do much for you besides help you specialize, but by then you're good enough to know what you need to specialize in and everything. _________________ interdimensional |

Yeah I was gonna post on if he actually meant that, but oh well.
Skills can matter outside of DP games though. I mean, the game forcing your aim to shake and forcing your reload to be twice as long as the other guy's isn't exactly something you just overcome with mental fortitude. You can work around it, but you're still at the disadvantage. Not that you have to have weapon-based skills of course, but in the case that you don't you'd just have the advantage somewhere else.
But yeah, I still wouldn't ever say you "need" it just to hang around pals and carry your own weight. So if that's what you meant, you should've just played. |

What really makes me like Metal Gear Online actually is the helplessness.
When you first start playing, you really can't do anything. You can aim, shoot, and run around. Everything has a learning curve, so everything is a hurdle to overcome. I felt pretty overwhelmed when I started playing. The first time I started playing this bothered me, so I quit. It wasn't hard when I had other games to go to. It was easy to forget.
I guess MGO never really gives you that power fantasy feeling. You start off so ordinary, and people are killing you with all these interesting ways.
But then you start playing again like you have to. Why? For me it was because I felt like there was something just a little deeper. I went to the SA forums and asked for help. They pretty much just said "use the M4, go or headshots". I did that, and I started playing better.
It was really interesting to see it happen, actually. All of these people killing me with all these sneaky tactics bothered me at first, but then when you're given just a gun and a target, you start being sneaky yourself. Ducking around corners, hiding in shadows. I found a really good spot in one of the maps and camped there for a while. I feel like most games try to keep you from waiting, but MGO encourages it.
There are definitely other players out there that can do other, fancier things than I can. I still feel embarassed when I get choked and knifed. But they can't choke me when they're dead. _________________ interdimensional |

One time I was watching a friend of mine playing Gears of War and he was in a pretty serious clan. They were always discussing strategy, the effectiveness of various locations on certain maps, maneuvers to outflank the enemy, etc. It all seemed pretty alien to me at the time.
MGO is a lot like that. To be really successful you have to be very aware of your surroundings, your teammates, and your enemies. Every tactic can be defeated so long as you expect it. It's a thinking man's shooter (although it does require a certain amount of action-oriented skill, of course). That's not to say it's a perfect game exactly, but it's a pretty complex and interesting one.
Also, there are now servers where headshots don't do extra damage, making shotguns and SMGs much more viable weapons. |

Except no one's ever in those servers. If all the Fauxhounds and stackers had to live in a world where not everyone does M4 headshots while shuffling around like they're having a mild seizure, well they'd certainly just have to find some other game to play!
As it is you already get called a "shotgun noob" and an "aa noob" for doing anything besides what I described above even in games where everyone else has the advantage if you just so happen to allow yourself to manage to get a kill that way. So yeah, the opportunity doesn't come up very often.
Honestly you guys are giving the game a bit too much credit. It's still way too much of a straight-on shooter for its own good. Dying via throatslit is the last thing you should be embarrassed by, really. Those are the dudes who really earned it. |

Here, how about this... everyone who's up for a game, add whether or not you've got (or are willing to get) the SCENE expansion. If we set up a game with levels other than the SCENE maps, you can still join. _________________

Also, for anyone who hasn't played this in a while, it would be a good idea to fire it up and start downloading updates asap. I can't even buy any of the expansions, but just the upgrade to version 1.31 took 2 hours. _________________ The King of America
