I will be playing some Metal Gear Online today.
Isfet, make sure to download the updates for MGO. Even if you're planning on playing expansion-less you still need to download the updates. And it will take some time. Like a lot of time.

Let's assume that
1. I'm terrible at MGS4 but I own it.
2. I've never done any registering or any mucking about with MGO in any context.
3. I'm pretty curious about playing with some SB brothers.
What would I have to do? _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Well, MGO is on the disc with MGS4, so game-wise all you'd need would be the expansions they've released. They've put them all into one pack which is something like $16-18USD.
Registering is the only pain in the ass. You have to make a "Konami ID" with them first and then make a "Game ID" specific to MGO. The Konami ID is mainly for managing all your activity in different Konami online stuff through their site, and you will most likely forget it pretty fast.
As for being terrible at MGS4, believe me, there are many, many people worse than you. :3 _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

What about this whole Japanese server thing I keep hearing about? Where you have to rebuy stuff? How would I go about making an ID for that? Would I need to switch my PS3's region? Sorry if this got covered in some other topic... _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

To play on the Japanese servers, you need a Japanese copy of the game. Luckily, there's a Japanese standalone MGO disc you can buy. From there you can make an account and everything the usual way. I don't believe you need to change your PS3's region.
Also guys, if you're keeping up the MGO Sundays, I might be able to play a bit today. It's been months since I've played though, so I could be a little rusty. Do you guys play with the expansion content? Because I don't have any of them. |

Well if I understood right, the Japanese MGO was released as a stand-alone game. Either that or they're just selling it on its own. Anyway, the only way to play on the Japanese servers is to import a Jap copy. Everyone who's tried it seems to agree that the Japanese servers are an all-around better experience than the, erm, other ones.
I think you have to rebuy the expansions if you go JP, but I'm not sure. As for language, apparently the game just looks at which language your PS3 is set to, so even though it's a Japanese copy it'll be in English. At least voice macros and such will. No promises with the other players.
...and it looks like someone beat me to it. :( _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

So in conclusion, if we get enough SB people together we won't need to play on the jp servers. But we probably won't.
Thanks for the info, guys. Gotsta finish a couple finals but in a couple days I'll prolly replay MGS4 (to remember how to play it) and get down on this. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Single player is nothing like multiplayer. The single player game doesn't force your hand as much as it does in multiplayer, and you can always escape running & gunning and hiding. Not the case in multi.
Anyways!
Let's get some MGOing on today. US servers.
Some tips!
http://www.metalgear-online.com/mgofaq/index.html
Also, it takes 2 hours to download the multiplayer content (even if you don't want to use the additional content, you have to have the pack), so, get your PS3 downloading. _________________ interdimensional |

I was playing survival just last night! had a great time. Generally dismayed by the widespread RP exploiting, though. Kind of want JP MGO, but I got to have a good night with the clan so I feel better. Earning RP is much more satisfying, and fun.
I usually just get on for survival/tournaments because that's when I know I'll be able to play with people. But I'll get on other times to play with folks if there is demand! _________________

I would care about people exploiting RP except:
1.) MGO is so broken already. You have to compromise for a lot of conceptual and technical failings to really take up some samurai honor code here and still take yourself seriously about it.
2.) Modes that allow you to earn RP and modes that don't are effectively two different MGOs. Survival/Tournaments are really hectic. Consistently turning the game on exclusively for those events really burns me out quick.
Except for the fact that they make you take what you do a little more seriously, pretty much everything about the RP modes exemplify the most undermining qualities of the game. A grab bag of 5 minute instances of running around like a headless chicken equipped with an assault rifle doesn't really scream "tactical espionage action" or even vaguely recall the goal of stealth.
I mean, I can get into it sometimes. It's just, like I said. A different game.
3.) 90% of the people with significant amounts of RP were laggers and cheaters and shit. They're keeping honest/middle-of-the-road players from being able to do much beside score their free 50 RWD all night as it is.
4.) KP is gonna catch wind and patch that shit up soon anyway.
---
But yeah, as for when you know you'll be able to play with people, JMGO is kind of surprising in that respect. You know how there are like ~3,000 people max playing on the US servers when things are really popping? That's how many people are playing in Japan in the dead of night over there. During the uptimes there's something more like 20,000, especially during Survival. They also have more days/times for Survival anyway, so there's really no shortage of games to be had over there if you're so inclined.
Anyway, gotten hooked back on this stupid game in general lately. Also, Adilegian just got his net back. So yeah, MOAI~ or whoever else, it's probably about time to try and get some SBers to have a go at this once again. |

I'm kind of inclined to agree with you on RP. I always wanted Automatching to give more RP, as that was my preferred way to pick-up-and-play. It's pretty tough to find a good free game of people your level, and more RP would give people more of an incentive to play automatching. It's not so much about honor as it is incentive. And since automatching doesn't let you party with anyone, it was (at time) generally more even. I guess that's all kinda gone to shit now, until it gets fixed.
I have always enjoyed Survival though, even when I wasn't really serious. Playing with randoms wasn't too bad as long as they had the right mindset (making a good self-deprecating team name helped).
Still, it's probably just me, but dissatisfaction with the system doesn't justify cheating.
Interestingly though, it seems that the real serious MGO folks weren't even around last night, as we went up against a lot more random teams than I had seen in a long time. I guess all the "pros" are too busy farming for RP that they don't even plan on spending. Don't really understand the mindset of some folks.
I do love this game, flawed as it may be.
And Play-asia doesn't seem to have too outrageous of a price, considering current exchange rates and all. _________________

Anyone up for some MGOing? If we get a large enough crowd, we can set up a private room to minimize the presence of assholes. _________________

You can purchase the expansions via an exclusive PSN link inside MGO.
Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2 really make me appreciate this game. MGO has a ton of problems, but it's a fucking beautiful thing once it gets going. Survival mode in particular is great. _________________ interdimensional |

You guys should hit up #sb when you want to play. I know you're in there sometimes, MOAI. It's too hard to communicate through/around this game well enough to really organize people and get rooms set up otherwise.
So yeah, Adilegian and I are about to play (US servers) and I'm gonna keep irc open in case one of you guys wants to join in tonight. |

Any night? I wrote a bunch of strategy stuff about MGO for PTOM over the past year, and I needed a break from the game for a while, but now I'm finding myself enjoying it again.
And don't worry about being terrible at Metal Gear. The point is that we can be terrible together! And earn a truly terrible victory....

I wish! My PS3 chunked out several months ago, and I'm only playing on borrowed hardware, but my copy of jMGO was in the drive when the system broke. =( Hoping to get a new copy for Christmas.

These were mostly really good games what for the communications and the speakings. I recorded all of our games, too, and I'm going to upload the video as soon as I find a good program that will rip DVD video to AVI (freely). _________________

You can play all but the newest three maps for free right now. The extra characters are pretty gimmicky/tacky and not particularly worth it if you ask me. Most of them are, anyway. I suppose you could just buy the SCENE pack, which would give you access to those newest three maps and Raiden+Vamp (who are among the more decent extra characters). There'd still be a chunk of games you'd be locked out of, but you'd be able to play on every map and would otherwise not be lacking any content worth losing sleep over. Edit: adilegian says it's chump change. so man up.
I hadn't planned on getting back into MGO too much, but it sounds like Adilegian's back on and it's been a long enough break for me that I'm cool with it. I asked a non-SB friend of mine if he'd like to start playing again as well and he seemed interested. So yeah, even if you did buy the triple pack the time seems to be right enough that we could help you justify it. |

Anyhow, yeah, money is a bit tight right now with christmas, and last night a water spill might have killed my keyboard, mouse, and PSOne, as well as some DS games, but I think I can swing it. I hope so anyhow. |
