That doesn't look very good.

But I see how they're playing with the original game rules in a very Pac Man C.E., Space Invaders Extreme way: instead of a partner ship, having a fleet behind you; and the strings of enemies where you kill all of them by hitting the leader--in Galaga, you could only fire fast enough to clear Challenging Stages by hitting the first guy and then everyone in a line behind him.

square is the judas of gaming.

first to nintendo, now to sony, except this time around, they will notice that their experiment with M$ isnt worth it because the ps3 is going to drastically outsell the 360 version in Europe. add that with japan, and US.loooool

Why do people really care what game a system is on, like that? How is it a "betrayal" in the slightest? This is especially ridiculous because the thing isn't leaving one system for the other. It's on both. I mean christ, get over it.

I suppose there are certain wistful ideals about "the character of a console" and such.

I don't like these platform jumps mostly because they're just completely unnecessary. The people who want to play FFXIII already have a PS3.

There's always a target platform, and then you get that other version. Devil May Cry 4. It feels really great on the Dual Shock, it runs really slickly, no load times. The Xbox 360 version has frame tearing and gimpy clickity-clack bumpers, but hey, they threw 50 identical red orb achievement icons in there. There are other things too, like in multiplayer games it fragments the userbase, and the painful cross-platform control schemes, like Burnout Paradise, in which it uses the loose-tooth-ish Dual Shock triggers to gas and break, instead of X and Square.

The FFXIII port is going to be a half-assed, fast-cash Gaijin-only release, and I'm predicting summon slowdown, artifacted FMV, low-bitrate voice, and some crusty feeling menus thanks to the lack of a D-pad.

No way. There are still tons of people who want to play FF13 but don't have a ps3. I'm one of them. I would have bought a PS3 once FF13 came out to play it and MGS4, but now, I can't see myself buying one unless Sony pulls out some crazy stuff. And God of War 3 and Killzone 2 won't do it.

And MGS4 on Xbox 360 is just a matter of time.

HD loading solves the load times, and nothing's stopping them from putting this on multiple discs. Blue Dragon was 3, so there's already a precedent. Lost Odyssey was 4. What's an extra disc or two above that.

eh, I can kind of sympathize in the sense that keeping it PS3 exclusive would show some kind of principle on Squeenix's part. It's kind of disappointing, in that sense. But I haven't really expected much in the way of "principle" from Squeenix since Kingdom Hearts, so this does not shock me.

I generally like console exclusivity too, because ideally it helps ensure a game will be of higher quality, since it can be tailored to the console's strengths. Almost all of the greatest games of the last generation have all been exclusive, with some of them getting inferior ports to competing consoles a year or so after release... and that's still more or less true, now.

That being said... lol internet amirite guys?

I guess I just don't put enough stock in Square to care one way or the other. Nor am I shocked. The people crying about "loyalty" to Sony or whatever are kind of forgetting Square jumped off Nintendo's boat to land on Sony's to being with. The PS3 isn't a dominant platform, so it isn't going to receive exclusive 3rd party content. That's just how it works. If they want that to change, they at least have to differentiate their market enough from Microsoft's to make it advantageous for certain titles to be developed with the PS3 in mind. As it stands, what 3rd party titles are exclusive these days? MGS4 is more or less the only thing. A couple Capcom titles, maybe.

That's not really what I mean. Just the idea that, you know. This here is a PS3 game. It reflects the values of the PS3. For whatever good or ill that may entail.

(and yeah it's a silly idea but there are implicit values to each console, more so in this generation than any other -- even if those values are shallow and rarely have any impact on what the games are like)

(and this will have zero effect on what FFXIII is like, except for the fact that the 360 version will have (probably quite hilarious) achievements)

And no, none of this really matters.

In other words, I don't think it's "wrong". Just a little ignoble. And hey, that's the reality of the videogames market right now. I don't fault them for it one bit.

As I was saying to Balbanes. The culprit is not Microsoft "paying them off" (regardless of what may have gone on behind the scenes.) The real "moneyhat" here is nothing more than market realities.

Not any more than Resident Evil 4 reflected the values of the Gamecube.

Except that it kind of did. That's one of the reasons Mikami made it an exclusive -- because he believed in many of the same principles that Nintendo did at the time. And RE4 is still far better suited to the Gamecube controller.

The only difference I see between the PS3 and the 360 is PS3 owners probably like Japanese games a bit more than 360 owners. It's not much at all. They do the same things, they grab for the same market. Square wasn't going to to anything interesting with FFXIII anyway, and this isn't going to change that.

Ehhhh kind of. I mean, Gears of War is very much characteristic of the 360 in just about every way. Though it would not seem out of place in the PS3's lineup, it would not be nearly as appropriate. Ditto for MGS4 being on the 360.

Or, I dunno, Halo on the original Xbox.

The markets are not especially different, granted. But the consoles place value in things somewhat differently. See also: the increased focus on online play for the 360.

Etc etc etc. I know I'm splitting hairs.

And even that's kind of a load of shit.

Look at it this way. There are so many enormous exclusive games released every year. Halo, Gears, MGS, Smash Bros., etc. If you're a Regular Person, it probably costs about $200 just to get the Big Games on a single system for a year. And these are the ones you can play forever. They'll last you a good long time.

It makes you wonder, like, who's the guy that's going out wasting his $60 on Dark Sector. What kind of person is this, in his compulsion to feed the GameStop cash register. Isn't this a person that already owns both the 360 and the PS3? To anyone that's going to be wasting their time with these low-key games, $400 for a PS3 is nothing. They already have both. They're already spending huge portions of their income on games, and have everything on earth.

So why not just put it on one system and be done? Some systems are better suited for some games than others. Why do we laugh whenever Microsoft trots out some desperate attempt to be Wii-like and attract The E Audience? Because the Xbox 360 is for frat boys. It's not all things to all people.

Are the Bro'd-out Gears of War 2 players the same people salivating over Emo Matrix Shiva Motorcycle Shlock? No. If you make an RPG on the Xbox, it has to be Western and Manly, like Too Human. It has to be Lord of the Rings-like, and it has to be full of action and guns and Diabloisms.

These board room decisions lead to shit like Beautiful Katamari. A game that makes us tap our cheeks to make sure we aren't paralyzed on one side, because the sticks aren't symmetrical, and a game that no one would buy anyway because the King of All Cosmos doesn't have a chainsaw on the bottom of his dick.

But FFXIII isn't leaving the PS3. The people like Mr. Gamefaqs above that think Square made Tara to be his girlfriend bought a PS3 the day it came about because Tetsuya Nomura is their hero and he told them to. No matter how much we associate the FF series with these people, they are still in the minority. The majority of FF buyers are the kinds of people you already mentioned. They own both systems, they buy everything, they know the difference between an 8.1 and an 8.2.

The guys that take a shot every time they get a chainshot kill are on the opposite spectrum. They don't own a PS3 because Brad across the hall doesn't own a PS3.

The majority of the people that own either system are the kinds of people for which their is no difference between them. Within this subset is the super gamer that has them both and doesn't give a fuck either way. The only difference here is the majority of Gears buyers don't own both system, but the majority of FF players probably do.

you know what?

metal gear solid 4 fucking sucks, and can go to hell.

as far as i'm concerned, as long as shit like mgs4 is a reason a human being would pay money to purchase a videogame console, no one is winning the "console war".

also, mgs4 has awakened me to the Very Strong Possibility that final fantasy xiii might Violently Suck as well.

and now nintendo is releasing a little plastic click-on nub for the wiimote so that it can actually implement motion controls. for fuck's sake. i hope to jesus it has a bypass port in the bottom, so you can string extra stuff on there. next thing you know they're going to tell me that my nunchuck is obsolete because it doesn't have a bypass port. they're going to release a click-on battery pack to boost the power to the unit so that twelve AA batteries will be enough to power the wiimote, the sensor pack, the nunchuck, and the nunchuk-pass-through head-mounted sensor cap (think "miner hat"). shigeru miyamoto's next megaton game will be a special edition of mario kart wii that requires you to use all these things plus the wii wheel while standing on top of the balance board.

actually, apparently nintendo's big announcement for tomorrow is "wii music". i know this for a fact. not sure if it's a secret or not. if it's supposed to be a secret, WHOOPS! there goes my NDA!

in less than six months time, you too can haul wiimotes over to grandma's bubble ward in the hospital and belligerently shake plastic in hopes that tinny midi renditions of classical music will sound "correct".

meanwhile, microsoft's shameless ripping off of the "spirit of the wii", or whatever the hell else you're supposed to call it, looks pretty good!

i'm going to go ahead and cast a tentative vote of no-confidence in all japanese game publishers; i might revise this later.

anyway.
