Actually yeah. If I were to make that post all over again, I'd only link the Toshiba.
My first laptop was a Toshiba, and I liked it a lot (has MacBook Pro style keys!!); my second laptop was a Compaq (HP and Compaq are same), and I wouldn't recommend them to others; my third laptop is a Toshiba (basically a lighter-spec 15" version of the one that I linked) and it's pretty nice so far.
Wal-Mart, every handful of months, has a cheap laptop deal with very limited stocks. The last one was this for $398:
http://www.dodevice.com/toshiba-a205-s5000-notebook-398-at-walmart-on-july-20th/
It has a meager 1.82Ghz Celeron 540, single core, but that's enough for everything I do. Can run 1280x720 h.264 without stuttering, can have 50 tabs in firefox without choking, can run CS3 just fine. Has a gorgeous screen, excellent 24bit 192kHz sound chip, bluetooth, and a dual-layer DVD R/W drive. My complaints are that the fan runs all the fucking time (might be able to tweak that), and the mouse buttons are a little bit ungainly. Otherwise I like it a lot! Pair it with Wal-Mart's suspiciously inexpensive warranty ($50), and I'm a pretty happy puppy. _________________

I can vouch for HP laptops being shitty. I've had mine for about two years or so and it runs slow as shit, overheats when doing anything even minimally processor intensive (ie youtube videos??), and is noisy and unreliable. _________________

Try downloading speedfan, psiga, and lowering the fans RPM. _________________

| i'd warn you though that a lot of laptop CPUs (i dunno about the celeron) run hot as fuck because of tight confines, and need that fan running like that to work correctly. |

Yeah, the Core 2 in my Dell laptop at work hits 72~74C in an air-conditioned room when it's just sitting there sometimes (even with automatic throttling enabled). Not sure how that doesn't crash it, considering my desktop Core 2 will crash before it hits 65C.
Also, while I haven't tried it myself, I have a friend who seems to like Notebook Hardware Control. |

Thanks for recommending SpeedFan, Kap. I'll try it out.
The one time I checked the CPU temp, it was 40c, and the fans were 100%. They are always 100%, constantly. It's obnoxious. _________________

your hardware should turn off to avoid damage, if the proc gets too hot.. besides, 60 or 70% is usally a hell of a lot less loud than 100%. _________________

| toshiba notebooks aren't too bad in the parts-for-money or ergonomics department, but be warned that they're pretty fragile and come with a lot of bloatware. asus is just about hands-down better nowadays. |

Mine wasn't so bad, honestly. For some reason they installed Google Desktop Search, which I probably wouldn't have, but if that's the worst thing I can say about what came pre-loaded, then hey. I think it has the usual Norton demos and things like that, which are easy to sweep away, but I wasn't getting a shitload of bloaty garbage all over the place or anything. Unless you wanna count Vista, ha ha ha etc.
Though yeah, I have heard good things about Asus in the past. I've had good experiences with Acer and Toshiba, too. Not a fan of Compaq or HP, unless they've made a conscious effort to change over the last year or so, which I'm not aware of. _________________

I don't know shit about this shit, help me
I'm probably in the market for a cheap laptop. Would buying this be a bad idea? Seems like a good deal. I don't know anything about the brand though. One of the customer reviews says the battery only last an hour and a half. Did he just not take care of it or is that normal?
Or, I dunno, any suggestions? _________________

That one looks fine, honestly. I'd even say that it's an acceptable choice for Cuba to consider. As for battery life, just about everything in that range is going to have really dubious battery life. _________________

Hey guys, I'm the girlfriend who is in need of a new computer. Thanks for all the tips. In a round-about way, mostly through your suggestions, I found this Acer computer, which I just purchased. I'm pretty happy about finally owning a computer worthy of existing in this decade and can't wait to abandon this one.
Thanks again! |

The kind of Acer laptops I seem to like the looks of sell out fast, so I'm simply asking about a single facet.
I like the looks of this thing. I want something light, resistant, but still capable, essentially. So I'm wondering whether the Intel's GMA video cards are competent stuff? _________________

They're good for anything that isn't 3D gaming. They're more than competent for the odd OpenGL/DirectX app, and dare I say it, faster than certain low-end Geforce/ATI mobile solutions that use shared memory. You should check the battery life on that Acer, however - if I recall, it's nothing amazing (a bit over 1 hour and a halfinternet says over 2 and a half hours, not bad), so take in account you'll drag that power brick everywhere. _________________

Call of Duty 4.
I wouldn't mind being able to play it on the go, and finally dick about with Team Fortress 2 with people.
I can live without these things, but I'm just curious. _________________

Again, I could just as well live without. I don't mind having to play indie or ROM stuff until I get a 360 or a desktop proper.
And nah, I'm not into all that window-dressing mumbo-jumbo, really. If it doesn't look like a mess, and is clear to the eye, that's good enough for me. _________________

| the x3100, basically, is the first intel chipset that's sort-of-viable for modern 3d stuff. it's not by any means good, but it's better than mine and everyone else's r300 derivates from ages ago, which is.. saying something. |
