The only missing from this from becoming a bizarre footnote of gaming is FF13 having a plot that is basically this and SquEnix suing the shit out of that.

When I saw the title I went, "Oh man why are they comparing this to Zelda." Then I went, "oh."

I dont. I move to London on the 24th and I shall be X-Boxless for a while which means I miss the Brutal Legend AND Forza 3 demos.

I dont mind them giving out trinkets or unlocks in game that will be made available later but holding out on Demo's is an unholy dick move. At least you dont have to put a deposit on them any more (the GAME Outrun 2 demo was totally worth it though. Only 3 stages long but also included live play).

As I said, I'm moving so I cant pick it up anyway so I didnt see a point to pre-ordering it. Im reconsidering though.

You have to wait a bit longer. For those really anticipating it, its a bit of a kick since it was originaly planned that pre-order access was going to be the 10th and the demo on the 17th.

Anyway, Activision has a unique take on the work place in a creative industry

Bobby Kotick wrote:

I don't understand the logic in tying demos to pre-orders. Presumably companies do demos to get people who have never heard of said game interested in it. But people who put a pre-order down are probably going to be buying said game, yes? They've already made a sale, you don't need to convince these gamers... The only possible outcome might be these folks trying the demo, deciding they don't like the game after all, and not picking it up.

I'm sure Gamestop is (as always) desperate to get pre-orders with what ever carrot-on-a-stick offers they can think of, but it doesn't seem like a terribly wise move for publishers. Perhaps that's just it; Gamestop is rabid for whatever kind of exclusive offers they can dig up, and publishers acquiesce with something they were going to do any way, just to keep a good relationship with them.

latest Famitsu news:

-Star Ocean 4 INTERNATIONAL for PS3.....English/Japanese voices, E/J/French/German subs. Dunno about menus, though.

-Yuusha/Badman 3D PSP is not, in fact, 3D. 3 is the number in the series, D is for dungeon.

-Tokimeki Memorial 4 PSP

-Last Ranger, upcoming PSP 3D action-RPG developed by Imageepoch and published by Capcom. Produced by Minae Matsukawa (Phoenix Wright series producer), directed by Kazuya Niinou (director of Trauma Center DS 1 & 2, Etrian Odyssey, 7th Dragon), character designs by Tatsuya Yoshikawa (Capcom artist, did the designs for Breath of Fire III-V), scenario by AAAAAAAARGGGHHHH, and music by Yoko Shimomura. You are a gladiator in a world full of warriors where everyone is ranked, and you are trying to become number one. No party, just the single character. Game continues whether you win or lose battles (losing lowers your rank), with the story changing. Weapon customization.

-Female lead of Persona 3 PSP will have two new female (!?) social links.

-Thexder Neo for PSP, downloadable via PSN store (1k yensz). Apparently the original game with new graphics, as well as a new 6 player versus mode.

-Nier Replicant, the PS3 version of Nier, mixes up the plot a bit. Instead of the 360 version where you play a father trying to save his daughter, now you play the daughter trying to save her brother. When there are some better scans of the most recent article, I will make an Axe topic comparing the two character designs because they are ridiculous.

Brutal Legend definitely needs a demo widely available - mostly because the gameplay is likely to be total shit.

Which is probably why there is no demo.

From the impressions out of PAX. The only complaint was the physics are a little floaty and camera was a bit sketchy at times but otherwise, its a solid game.

Also, Game Informer has Crackdown 2 details in its new issue. Shamelessly stolen from NeoGAF.

Game Informer wrote:

-Dynamic Civilian Events (Example: A man trying to sell something in the day, getting marauded in the night. And the Agency will put up signs saying "play dead when you see an Infected". Lulz ensue.)

-Support Points are gone, Agents can now call in for ammo and supplies anytime and anywhere.

-The game looks much more detailed and grittier, but still keeps the "cartoony" look we all love so very much.

-Vehicles like Trucks or Buses have room for a mounted turret, which makes them great for getting around in Co-Op.

-More variations in weapons, meaning people have more to choose from than just the homing rocket launcher.

-Most of the civilian cars in the game are the same, but reskinned and armed with armor and weapons to survive in the new hazards of city life.

-The Cell (a gang) is composed of ordinary citizens just wanting to reclaim the city from your team (the good guys). You take them out, and reclaim their turn for the Agency.

-More instances where Co-Op play is prudent.

-The city hasn't changed in architect, all the roads are the same. Some buildings have been demolished and other small things, but over all it's the same city.

-You'll obtain skill orbs by using abilities relevant to your character.

-Four player Co-Op

-16 player Competitive Multiplayer. Tons of fun. Players collect special weapons, bonuses, and gadgets. Progression system like CoD4.

-Melee attacks are much more varied a fluid.

-Key to the City DLC is a go!

-The freaks evolve over time, making them MUCH more fearsome as the game progresses.

-All repetitiveness is completely removed. And less shitty boss battles.

-Doing missions in the day or night has a huge effect. At night, the freaks come out to play.

-City decays over time from the infection.

-New Agency helicopter and other vehicles. All old Agency vehicles returning.

-A lot more weapon variety. New powerful shotgun, Rail Gun, and sticky grenades.

-More precise targeting system. Skill is rewarded.

-Much more defining detail in all aspects of the game.

Most importantly, The Narrator is back

Skills for kills agent.

you should get an Amazon credit card so that you'll get triple points for Amazon purchases which give you gift certificates to spend on more Amazon purchases until you're buying everything from Amazon and get a tramp stamp tattoo that says "SUPER SAVER SHIPPING 4 LIFE".

...like me. (except the tattoo)

As for where to buy games, I've actually been picking up a lot of stuff at Best Buy these days. Yes, it's a horrible mega-corporation. But it also has a free "Reward" card that gives you as-good-as-cash certificates after buying enough stuff. You get bonus points for buying game related items if you sign up for the also free "Gamers Zone". If you pay attention to all the bonus points, you can end up getting a $5 certificate after buying like 2-3 games, and that's on top of extra coupons like the 10% off all games/movies/CDs one I get every month or so, and stuff like the free $10 gift card i got for buying Metroid Prime Trilogy with a coupon from the website. They had an in-store buy any PS3 game get one half-off last week, and the same deal for 360 games the previous week.

Thing is, you can't get great selection of less mainstream stuff at Best Buy. I use it for any big name stuff though - if it's a release from your Sony, MS, Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Square-Enix... they'll have tons of copies right away, maybe 1 day later than a Gamestop. Something like a more niche Atlus game is more hit or miss and usually won't be in stores until a week or so later than release if they get it. Another benefit - you don't have to deal with annoying pre-order pitches or "did you reserve it?" questions like Gamestop. You also don't have to pay and/or wait for shipping, like Amazon.

Hey, kids. Wanna play spot the refrences in Brutal Legend's intro? You could, but you could be missing the amazing animation (Yes, before you ask. The Animation lead is Ex-Pixar).

Oh, if you did and haven't got all of them...

-The Guitarist is voiced by Voice Actor who played Raz in Psychonauts
-The guitarist does Raz's silly dance on top of the set before he falls off
-The lead singer has the same voice actor as Domino in Grim Fandango

The Demo is out tommorrow for pre-orders though it seems that deal has have been dropped in Europe. While its still un-confirmed, The entire region, sans Germany natch, may get the demo tomorrow instead of having to wait till next week. XBL Gold gets it 24th of October otherwise. PSN and XBL Silver the 30th.

Double Fine knows the score. Bleeped is funnier 90% of the time in everything.

I kinda worry it might mess around with the game a bit since since the next screen asked if you wanted to see blood and decapitations "Only if its awesome". I'm kinda thinking that they will maybe use the selections to change what the experience is like. For example.

Swearing off/Blood off = PG
Swearing off/Blood on = PG-13 (Violence is only really shown when relevant to the story. Everything else is bloodless)
Swearing on/Blood on = R

Pretty classy of them to include these options when people wrote in saying they wanted to play the game with their kids though.

i'm hoping the german (and maybe australian?) version of the game will bring up a pop-up about the gore but instead joke that they can't actually give you a choice and you should complain to the gov'ment.

Left 4 Dead 2 has gotten an RC "rating" in Australia. Refused Classification. Against the law to sell it, rent it or promote it.

[UPDATE] GameSpot AU has received the official ruling from the Classification Board. The refusal largely focuses on the Board's interpretation of the game's violence finding that "The game contains realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence which is inflicted upon "the Infected" who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently" The ruling goes on to say that "However, it is the use of the "melee" weapons such as the crowbar, axe, chainsaw and Samurai sword which inflict the most damage. These close in attacks cause copious amounts of blood spray and splatter, decapitations and limb dismemberment as well as locational damage where contact is made to the enemy which may reveal skeletal bits and gore."

Interestingly the report also notes that "A minority of the Board is of the opinion that the violence is strong in playing impact and therefore warrants an MA 15+ classification with the consumer advice of strong violence," suggesting the ruling was anything but unanimous among Board members.

Hooboy. It sounds kind of like they are punishing Valve for making a game that is just too good. After all, "frenetic and unrelenting" is the whole point of Left 4 Dead. With Left 4 Dead 2 they made it so intense that the fogies couldn't handle it.

I bet Valve is going "ohhh fuckk" and is going to scramble to create a censored version and resubmit. I sympathize. I know when I worked at a game developer, we lived in constant fear of the rating boards, and put disproportionate effort into eliminating anything that might conceivably increase our rating. Like, at one point there was a self-shadow effect that happened to create a black spot on a female model's crotch. A bug was filed and we modified the texture.

Also, this is yet another instance of the commonwealth countries having shitty free speech protections. I'm pretty sure this kind of banning would be unconstitutional in the US.

L4D2 gets passed fine in other Commonwealth countries, like Britain and Canada. Second, the US has the AO rating which outright bans any chance of 'mature' sexual content within games. In other words, stop being such a hypocrit.

our ban is a soft ban. retailers would CHOOSE not to sell an AO game because they are ninnies. we aren't telling them they aren't allowed.

Stick in a screen saying they're good old undead normal zombies? I don't remember L4D ever making a big deal about the infected technically not being zombies, who cares anyway?

also, console manufactorers won't allow n AO game to be published, which is a bizzare thing to do. but then all of those "you can't do that on OUR console" policies are crazy, like sony's that stops arcade ports and simple 2000 games coming out in america.

Well, no, because AO games get released all the time. Shitty porn games. You're right that the industry-led censorship regime is unconscionable, but it's never as bad as a state-led one.

actually AO games rarely get released any more. as far as anyone important is concerned, no rating = AO rating. so why pay to get it rated in the first place?

the key difference being that in the USA you're allowed to sell games without ratings, whereas in AU it's illegal to distribute games without a rating.
