Samurai Shodown II for XBLA. I feared they'd use some sacrilegious old-new hybrid interface (hello Streets of Rage 2!!), but no, it's pretty authentic once you choose "Single Player". Multiplayer works pretty well too.
Plus, it allows for full button mapping, so you don't have to press medium + low to get high if you don't want to. Works for me; most of my recent Haohmaru experience comes from CvS2. |
This fills me with good cheer for when/if SNK releases KOF '98 UM on Live Arcade. _________________

Mercenaries 2
Wait I thought these guys knew what they were doing. They made the fucking Swede into a catchphrase dispenser, gave the disembodied mission control voice the body of young Joanna Dark and the few missions I've played so far were stuffed with exactly the kind of bullshit the first one avoided.
It gives you a jet-propelled speedboat right at the start and then forces you to turn around if you go in any given direction for ten seconds. |

After a lot of playtime, I've come to the conclusion that Mercenaries 2 is not as good as Mercenaries 1. It's pretty unfortunate. :( Mercs 2 is just bigger and has co-op. Mercs 1 is like a hundred times less buggy and probably a lot more coherent to boot. The way they've structured the missions in Mercs 2 is just not as elegant and a lot closer to the GTA it seemed like they were trying to get away from.
Mercs 2 is still pretty awesome though. |

| I downloaded Fallout 1 from Good ol' Games. Its a bit more accessible than I thought it would be. I hope I'm not going to be killing rats for most of this game. |

| i started playing the original paper mario on vc after reading the tgq thread. it's pretty charming and understated, hits that cuteness spot just a notch below cloying where recent mario games have tended to land squarely in cloying-land (i think the audio is the key). it's nice that i can understand the math without having aspergers. |

I dunno where Fallout gets its reputation for being inaccessible, really... it's not precisely new player-friendly, but it's at least more accessible than most Western RPGs.
You should search for and find our Fallout SBGC thread for pointers! _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Thanks CubaLibre, I'll check out the SBGC thread later.
I suppose its not that inaccessible, but back then I remember only wanting to play FPS and racing games on my PC. |

I sat in the dark with Devils Crush and a glass of Coke. Good times.
Whilst I'm on a PC-Engine kick, is it worth picking up Ys1+2 from the VC? |

Too Human Demo: Wha? What is this? This game is so confusing and convoluted that its almost made we want to at least rent the game.
The sword fighting is really hilarious though, its like I am on Ice Skates. Maybe if they just had little rocket boosters on the ankles of the character I would be fine with it. But the fact he makes not even a jumping motion to dart to an enemy 20 feet away is disgusting. Just a little rocket burst would do.
Also, I have had zero problems fighting hordes of enemies by just spinning the right stick in a 360 and touching nothing else. This exact some effect would be created by tapping X and a direction, that would free up the Right stick to adjust the camera. What a novel idea!
Ill be honest though, I had more fun playing it than the Force Unleashed demo. _________________

Not a pacifist per se, but he didn't fight with his own hands, if you know what I mean. He was an Engineer of Destruction.
Of course I have no idea how he's presented in Spartan. I DID just buy the game tonight, though! _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Played a good thirty matches or so of Samurai Shodown II: Haohmaru's Trip To Hell on the XBLA. Netplay's pretty decent - it seems a bit better than classic Kailerra. I know, I know, it's no GGPO, but it's totally playable and gives me a lot of hope that by the time KOF98UM hits the 360, they'll have it butter-smooth.
I also finished Infinite Undiscovery tonight. I enjoyed that game a heck of a lot more than I expected to. It probably took me about 25 hours to finish the game, counting game-overs. The difficulty balance is way off for the last areas, however; the first part of the Underwater Palace boss rush is dramatically harder than anything that comes after its first save point. I wiped five times trying to finish some of those encounters, and then after that it was pretty smooth sailing. The final boss was particularly weak, but since he was the last (multiform) boss in a sequence of three or so without a savepoint, I guess I can let it slide.
The plot holds zero surprises for anyone who's ever looked at a JRPG, but I found the characters fairly pleasant versions of their archetypes, and since the game doesn't have two dozen hours of filler content to stretch it out like some RPGs I can think of it's a lot easier to just go with the flow. Now if they'd just added a tactic for "run the fuck away from the boss, he's about to use his attack which does a dozen highly damaging hits," bossing around my allies would be about right.
Oh, and you kill God at the end of the game. _________________

I am playing DQIV on my DS right now.
This is the first DQ i've played since the original NES game.
I began Chapter 5 and have been wandering around grinding.
Chapter 3/Torneko's quest is like the Kuribo's Shoe of JRPGs. |

Road Avenger for Sega CD. It's a Dragon's Lair type game.
This is a lot of fun, were any of the other games like this fun?
Which should I play next, Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, some less known sega cd game? |

Stay away from the Don Bluth games, they're slower paced.
Instead: TIME GAL! It's from the same company who did Road Avenger.
Cliff hanger/Lupin/Castle of Cagliostro was probably my favorite. |

Elevator Action Returns/II, in light of recent local enthusiasm. Was expecting it to be a little more seamless (no Mission Objective/Success screens and so on), but was much impressed by the general level of detail in the scenery, cross-sectioning of the subway car etc. Felt ant-farmy.
(Likely wouldn't have stuck with it sans unlimited credits, though no disrespect to the title - there aren't many arcade games I'd go all 1CC-graaaah for these days, or indeed ever.) |

games you didn't play today:
that reprint of smt:nocturne i was feeling so smart to have snatched up? i finally got around to popping it in.
it's a bad print. it makes a horrible clicking noise when running and while it doesn't freeze, exactly, it refuses to load the "choose your name" screen. from what i've read, other people have had less severe but similar problems. i'm going to see how much atlas wants to replace it tomorrow.
i'd suggest you guys make sure you're getting an older copy if you decide to buy it, expensive though it may be. i am fucking pissed. |

At the final Battle with Dracula in Bloodlines, and its with the Spear-guy. This entire battle would be twice as easy with Whip-guys angled jumping whip strike. Sure Sprear-guy can twirl it aroud, and do a super jump, but he can't poke at an angle while jumping. Pffff. _________________

Fantasy Zone Complete Collection is pretty much the best collection of old games ever made. The fact that it includes a new game certainly tilts things in its favor.
Also, there're a few pictures of Manabu Namiki wearing a Llamasoft t-shirt in this SMS Power thread. |

I made my third shmup 1CC on Cho Aniki Virtual Console (normal mode)!! The final boss is seriously the greatest thing ever. I won't spoil him.
The other two were DDP (first loop) and Cho Ren Sha 68k (also first loop). |

i don't like half-life 2, guys. i tried, i loved the beginning, i dig the atmosphere, i can appreciate the level design even though it's not quite my cup of tea, i can see how it's the greatest thing in the universe if you're even half ok at fps, but i just can't enjoy the vast majority of it.

I've put aside my replay of Persona 3 temporarily (hadn't touched it in a long time, really) to jump into FES.
I think I may have a hard time making it through this without all the high-school-life shit to break up the dungeon-crawling. |

| It may interest you to know that in Persona 4, the dungeon crawling and the socializing occupy the same time slot so to speak, so there's actually more of a need to juggle your social life and your monster-killing. |

That's the weird thing though; other people who don't like HL2 usually say it's too easy and the enemies are too dumb. You seem to be saying it's too difficult? Or am I misinterpreting? _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

I finished Castlevania Aria of Sorrow in the wee hours of this morning. I think I only got like 95% ish of the map completed, but I did get the good ending (after learning my lesson with Harmony of Dissonance). Now that I'm done with this game, I must say I was disappointed with the final-final boss. The one before it was cool, but the whole chaos realm felt rather lazy.
Next - Circle of the Moon. |

yeah, i can't hack it. the shooty bits have gotten too frustrating, the only time i've had fun killing things is when there's a puzzle-y solution to it. the impressive but wearying sound design doesn't help.
i'm really, really fucking bad at fps, btw, i'm lucky to get a single kill in a random cod4 deathmatch. they're just not for me, i guess. except portal but that doesn't really count. |

Looking for my winter boots in the overpacked basement last week, I found more of my brother's old games and rescued them. As in, I hooked up the old SNES in my room and fired up the carts I found.
Was elated to see my old Final Fantasy 2 file still working and as awesome to roam the lunar subterrein as ever. Also more cool to test out recent glitches for my self (i.e. giving Rydia a Titan Hammer and Rosa a Charm Harp...)
Made me wanna replay a retranslated rom of the Hardtype I had on one of my backup disks (that j2e 10th anniversary one). It's interesting, not sure if I like it, but it is definitely interesting to see different takes on the source material, kinda depressing when remembering that this seemed to be a more direct translation, and that the source was nothing special either...
Also picked Knytt back up to explore, man there's like a whole second game of map that I never even touched finishing the game. I'm assuming the LG means low gravity... |

the worst part is having to punch those green monsters to death, very slowly, because guns don't work underwater.

I feel like I've been working on The Longest Journey forever. I've played it at least 6 or 7 times and never finished it over the years. I really need someone to inspire me to finish this game, because I always find it enjoyable when I play the game, it's just that I get distracted somehow and I can't continue with it. Then when I come back to it, I can't remember my relative position and feel that I have to start over. _________________
