But yeah, I think the general idea of not putting anything that is recently popular is a good rule of thumb. If it's a song that's been around for a few years and people still like it, that's tried and true. If it's the current radio hit, you run a much bigger risk of it becoming un-trendy (and laughable).
I'm also sick of these bad covers. Guitar Hero 2 was noticeably worse due to the shitty covers of the songs, after the original was surprisingly good. Some of the vocal Donkey Konga tracks were mediocre too. If you can't make the covers good or use instrumental songs, you're better off writing original music. Think Parappa or the absolutely fan-fucking-tastic Um Jammer Lammy (not the unfortunate PS2 Parappa 2), or even Bust-a-Groove.
