I was ALL OVER the news of Ouendan; a goofy rhythm-based game where you play a team of super-cheerleaders who spring into action to help people through really mundane things! Awesome! I was strongly considering importing it, even though my Japanese is fairly mediocre and I knew I wouldn't understand most of it. Then I heard that it was being "remade" for America as Elite Beat Agents; I was skeptical at first, but Gamespot's previews convinced me that it kept the gameplay and wackiness of the Japanese original, but transplanted it to an American setting.

This was not a lie; the gameplay is intact, the wackiness is indeed very intact but just transplanted to an American setting (in the first mission you help a babysitter and her quarterback boyfriend take care of some unruly kids, and it's actually really entertaining).

HOWEVER: The music is almost entirely terrible covers of "popular" songs that have already become overplayed and lost their popularity, like "sk8r boi" and "Rock This Town". I don't know for sure, but I feel fairly confident that the music in the Japanese version was written specifically for the game, which would've been SO much better.

ATTENTION GAME COMPANIES! Do not use "current" music in your games, because it will no longer be current by the time the game comes out, it will make your game seem dated even when it's brand new, and everyone will probably be sick of the songs by then or soon after, which will impair their enjoyment of your game!

ah, you are correct!

Still, I wouldn't mind j-pop covers as much because I don't know what they're "supposed" to sound like, and I haven't heard them a million times on the radio. Conversely, I bet Japanese players would prefer Elite Beat Agents for the same reason.

Incidentally enough, I think Ouendan sold like shit in Japan. I bet Elite Beat Agents sells to them a lot better, much like the import scene in the US ate the shit out of Ouendan.

Aha! There you go.

I didn't mind playing songs by CHICAGO and DAVID BOWIE. Ha ha, 80's Ballad Music FTW

I think I will mind less when I get to the Bowie and Chicago and Rolling Stones songs. It's "sk8r boi" and the really bad cover of "Rock This Town" (which I normally like) right at the beginning that made me unhappy.

SuperWes, I agree with your review enough that now I'm anxious to play more of it when I get home tonight, because the characters, situations, and gameplay ARE more compelling than the soundtrack is de-compelling.

This game is fucking awesome. The only bad song is skater boi, though personally I hate "let's dance" too. Even pop stuff like that Ashley Simpson song and the sum41 and good charlotte songs were enjoyable. Quit being such a damn wapanese.

shit, there's sum41 and good charlotte in there too? Urge to play... falling...

Well, let's not be *too* hard on them. After all, there has to be some tip of the hat to the young demographic to allow them to relate to the music in the game. I mean, as much as I would have liked for them to use their brains and choose *any* of Bowie's other songs (though I doubt that my choice of "Queen Bitch" would have been selected), or include some Iggy Pop and the Stooges ("Search and Destroy," anyone?), or the Mavericks, or Paul Simon...there has to be something that the kids of today will latch onto. That's fair, isn't it?

FUCK the kids.

...by which I mean: yeah, I'm sure that's why they did it, but again putting "current" music in it instantly dates it, especially since all of that current music is no longer current when the game finally came out. They put it in there to cater to the kids, but now the kids are listening to completely different things and turn up their noses at that "outdated" music from six months ago.

It smacks heavily of adults saying "dude" and trying to be "cool with the kids" instead of just being adult which the kids will be interested in on its own merits.

You guys ever played Donkey Konga 2 US? Elite Beat Agents has the best soundtrack in the history of gaming compared to that.

Sum 41 is the 2nd song in the game. You've already played it.

The one with the Meowzilla movie director.

Oh, OK. That was more withstandable than the SUM41 song in GH.
