| I climed down a ladder in an area connected to the Guidance Gate and it disappeared behind me. There was a stone tablet at the bottom, but I had no way of reading it at the time. I imagine it was some kind of ancient veiled insult towards my n00bersc00berosity. |

Grail (because it's an incredibly helpful item):
In the east side of the Guidance Gate is a room with two pushable blocks, and a skeleton against the east wall who mentions a "shortcut" between ruins. Push against the wall that he's lying against and you'll warp to the opposite side of the map, next to a block. Push the block on to the weight to open the chest that holds the Grail. |

| If you've already done the thing with the armor display, then you should be able to find the ankh jewel at this point by simply revisiting some rooms you haven't been to in a while. |

They're entrances to... other areas. You'll need another item to open them up. I'm sure you'll figure it out in time.
Toups: The game has two sets of files in the music directory - one set for the midi mode and one set for the PSG mode, which I imagine uses an emulated MSX sound format (.sgt). You can switch between the two modes via the options menu. |

| Yeah, it just looks like the 1.01 patch only fixes the changes between the original patch and the new one, but doesn't actually include everything that was in the original patch. So! I uploaded the original patch here for the time being. It should work for you. |

Spoiler answer time!

I am another person who is stuck as all hell, and needs a nudge in the right direction!
I've defeated the first boss, haven't found any others. I've explored all but one of the rooms of the Mauloseum (I can't get to the last one), and I have no idea what I'm trying to do for the puzzle with the three pedestals. |
Try whipping the symbols in the pedestals.

The solution to all of the above problems lies within the Spring of the Sky, actually. First, you're going to have to get wet and take some damage in order to get the item that lets you breathe underwater. Obviously you can't live long enough to make it through the huge expanses of water that make up most of the area, but you can survive long enough to reach the chalice warp-point, and one other area that leads to where you need to go.

It opens up another shop in the vincinity.

| Incidentally, was I supposed to get some sort of item for killing the first boss? Because I didn't. |
Nope! (that's probably not a spoiler)

| Get all the symbols to match up. Each set of symbols effects the area in a different way, as well. |

| Oh no, it's just a fake that traps you in a tiny cage with no way out. It throws off the risk-reward balance by giving you no indication if something is a reward or not. |
Are you referring to that trap in the Temple of Moonlight? There's plenty of indication - there's a ceiling of spikes directly above the pedestal, and even when I tried it out for kicks thinking it was there to screw me and got trapped, I just reloaded, warped back and walked 4 rooms to where I was before-hand. The game has generally been extremely consistent about this so far in my experience.
I'm having a hard time relating to your complaints about the puzzles, though - I didn't have any trouble with the pedestal puzzle, for example, and every time you hit something and hear a pinging noise that means you probably have to use a different weapon to destroy it. Your comments about the controls are hard to argue with, but they strike me as being one of the things that make the game what it is inextricably, and if you find yourself incredibly frustrated by them to the point where you're not having fun any more, you should probably just stop now. I haven't run into a situation as difficult as the climb up the Spring of the Sky, but while you sounded incredibly frustrated by it, I just tried it a few times, made it to the top and thought that it was a very well paced and intense bit of platforming.
By the way mauve is there a way to get anywhere in the Confusion Gate via the entrance in the Temple of Moonlight, or do I have to find an alternate entrance via another area connected to the Graveyard? |

Yeah, that room was total bullshit.

The solution to my problem was a genuine head-slapper.
EDIT: Ok, I got the endless key after suffering through some absolutely insane puzzles that made me want to punch someone. I am now slamming my head against this new one in the Endless Corridor. I think now would be a good time for a break. |

Yeah, I figured I'd have to do something like that. I just felt kind of drained at the time (as dracko said in the gamer's quarter forum, you don't play La Mulana, you endure it). Problem solved now, though. |

Toups: Match 'em up, 3-of-a-kind. A tone will sound when you do. Then check the other areas. Stuff will have changed.
klez: Why did going through the Endless Corridor bring me to a ladder to nowhere at the bottom? If you could just flat-out tell me what I need to do to get the ladder to go somewhere, that would be great. |

| Another edit to deet: now that I'm thinking are you still on the "third" floor |
No, I went down to the bottom and cleared it out. There's a ladder down but it just hits nothing, so I assume I need another item to open it.
Edit: Ok, I made it to the Shrine of the Mother and it still doesn't feel like I'm anywhere near the end of the game. I'm beginning to really appreciate how remarkably well designed the game's structure is in terms of how non-linear it is, but goddamn, the game is just insanely huge. |

professor scissors: Pretty much everything you mentioned requires a seal, except for the Endless Corridor, which requires an item that you won't get for a while. You'll want to try standing on top of the minecart at some point. The solution to the drain in the spring of the sky is in-between the two things you have already tried beating the fuck out of. It's small. You'll probably want to use shuriken.
Oh, and the glove increases the speed at which you push blocks. |

You have no idea. I mean, you seriously don't, if you're still in the Guidance Gate.
Speaking of which I need some pointers, klez/mauve: I'm in the Twin Labyrinths, and feel as if I'm at the verge of solving several puzzles on my own, but at the same time I'm really at a loss. I already found the ankh jewel, but there's a twin gate that I can't reach on either side near the top of the map. It seems like I should be able to get down there from somewhere else, but all of the usual stuff hasn't worked. There's also a block puzzle which I can't solve because I need a weapon that I don't have to break a wall open. It's in a room with a shop in the top right corner. |

Bats are pretty much annoying forever. It doesn't matter what weapons you have when they blend into the background/water and are placed directly on places where you are likely to jump. This doesn't happen very often, but just enough to remind you that they're out there.
Also klez when the hell does the lamp of time recharge? I was terrified of saving my game in case I totally used up the one use I had of it ever and was screwed for life, as unlikely as that seemed. |

| Swimmy: I just now killed that dude. My lifebar is pretty much maxed out, I have all the weapons besides the super upgraded whip, over 150 spears, and he was still a pain in the ass. He never glitched out on me though. What I'm trying to say is that you should definitely come back later. Much later. |

I didn't kill that guy for a long, long time. If a boss has you stumped, chances are good that your best bet is to come back much later.
Also yeah, this game pretty much crushed by soul around the point when I finished going through the Goddess Tower. I don't know why, either. It's been significantly less annoying lately, but I can't muster up the strength to finish. |

| The best easy money cheat in the game is to just crack open all the pots you find, which will eventually lead you to 100-coins and other shit. Spending time to make 30 coins a go just seems like a waste of effort. Money isn't even that useful for the most part, anyway, at least in the sense that I always had enough money for the necessary items when they came up. At least, after I purchased the glyph reader and shit. |

| I stopped playing a while ago and have no intention of finishing, but I enjoyed what I played. The problem is that the game is just too damn long. You can only string the player along for so long before making breakthroughs against insane game-logic stops being satisfying. As far as I'm concerned, anyway. |
