OK guys I have a PC question. I thought my computer had 2 ethernet port, but it only has 1 :( The existing one is obviously in use with my modem, and I would like another one to use for my Xbox so I can access Xbox Live. So, I ask you 2 questions:

1) Is it possible to have an adapter of some sort that plugs into an ethernet port but has 2 female ports on it, or something similar?

2) A quick scan for the above thing brings up a USB to ethernet adapter, which plugs into a USB port and has an ethernet input hole. Is this a wise choice/suitable alternative?

Any help is appreciated, thanks dudes.

Yes, Ethernet can be multiplexed almost infinitely, that's what networking is all about. The device you're thinking of in 1) is called a hub or switch. Networking equipment is conceptually made of interlinked standalone devices so you won't find what you want by searching for "adapter".

But actually, since you want to access the Internet with both devices, it sounds like what you really want is a NAT router. This is a switch but with extra features to let several computers share the same public Internet Protocol (IP) address. This one is the generally recommended consumer one. You can plug your modem into the leftmost plug, and the PC and the Xbox into two of the remaining ones. You will also have 2 extra plugs left over plus wireless in case you get more computers.

Thanks Broco! That was very helpful, and I'll probably end up getting one of those.
