So I just finished Contact. Unsatisfying in the long run. Then I remember all the locked doors and chests that tell me "He can only pick locks in Shadow Thief clothes." I never found those clothes. So I load up Gamefaqs (OK in the aftermath of a game, not during) and look and it tells me to "go to Bamboo Island." after beating Aegis. Where the fuck is Bamboo Island? It's not anywhere on my map. What the fuck am I missing?

it's one of the obscure sidequests. you have to do something like walk outside the pyramid and tap a bird so it drops a map.

but, honestly, i don't know why anyone would continue playing after the ending.

i would imagine those who love stat grinding and item collecting would love playing after the end of the game. there were also some extra "boss enemies", who were just new color schemes of regular baddies. the only difference is that they will kill you in one hit, if you fight them after you finish the game.

the sidequests are pretty rigid, though.

I beat the game about a month ago, but I never got to use the WiFi stuff and I don't even know what it does. I have a connection in my house but I certainly don't know anyone else who owns the game. Is it just for something stupid like item trading? because then nevermind.

But if its something really cool then I'd like to try it out.

Well, I was just puzzled that I missed something that seemed so integral. What a waste of potential this game was.

Well, I guess you're done now, but what you would have had to do was muck around one of the top floors in the second aegis pyramid, heading south through a fake wall. You'll end up outside as a flying pink flamingo flaps by. Tap it and he'll drop a map to bamboo island.

Once you get there you have to do one of those world-tour fetch quests for this ailing old man, where he'll give you a hint about some person somewhere in the world that you'll have to track down and talk to. There's like three steps.

Getting it's a real bitch honestly. I can see going through all of that for a unique weapon or armor piece, but it's a really obscure quest for one of the 6 costumes. Kind of a big deal. A really bad design decision.

I found the online component was actually rather interesting. You know those secrets the professor asked you at the beginning of the game? Well when you make "contact" with someone else (har har) a dupe of their character is sent to your wifisland and vise-versa. You can talk to him/her and learn its secrets or you can fight it, since it reflects your actuall stats at the time of the trade. From what I understand trading with a high-level player is a good way to level up later in the game. So I'm told. I never mucked around post-game either

Also talking to this friend for the first time will net you either a unique item or 5 points in a random stat. But you can't fool the game by deleting names, or switching slots.

Of course the problem is that it's hobbled by nintendo's awfull friend code system. Since you aren't actually playing with another person at the same time (just downloading a copy of their character) it's not like you can open the doors to your town ala Animal Crossing. You have to hook up with a cat, swap and enter friend codes, set up a time when you'll both be on, and then hope. You can't just search for people online like in any sane-minded online model. It feels like a tremendous amount of work for not a whole lot of pay-off.

I like it in theory, and it's better in the game than out, but the friend codes ruin it.

contact is about two-thirds optional content, the way online multiplayer games are - difference being that you'll actually find somebody in the gameworld who cares about that content in the online games.

contact's neat. i've said this before, but the most striking thing about it for me is how quintessentially "gameboy" it is.

I really like Contact, but I can't justify it. I can slander it pretty well, though, as it has shit combat and tons of wasted potential (both of which are sort of the point). Toups also likes it yet has trouble explaining /why/.

It's in the details, I think. Little things, like how the professor addresses the boy each time before he goes out and his constant presence with commentary on the upper screen.

And the ending was genuinely moving for me considering events in my life at the time and the nature of the personal information entered at the beginning of the game.

Yeah, i'd reccomend it for the same reasons as Dongle: The little touches. Contact has mostly dull story oddly capped off by an arresting, genuine ending.

I think expectations were a little too high. Once folks saw the first screenshots and started making erroneous Earthbound comparisons in addition to a (maybe) assumed pedigree coming from grasshopper studios (funky developers to watch ever since Killer7), people maybe started thinking it ought to be more than it was.

Really it's a simple little dungeon crawler with a lot of charm. If you look at it from that perspective I think you'll have fun with it.

I got bored with Contact on the Jappanese type island. Nothing has happened in the game so far. Should I finish it?

Yes. Yes. Yes. You need to finish the game if you've invested that much time in it.

It has a very rewarding ending, in the intrinsic sense.

The ending is great. That's all I can say about it since I can't find any way to defend my love for this title.

I basically treated this game like Sim City, only it focused on one dude instead of a town. I zoned during battles, constructed the right items, and guided Terry's development all game. The right outfit, the perfect weapon, the most delicious food for gains. It all had to click just right or else I would die.

I'm rambling now, I'm probably just reaching here. Worth finishing judging by how far you are, Rucio. That's where the game started picking up for me.

I guess I'll get to it then after I finish the 5th case of Pheonix Wright. And perhaps one more runthrough of Hotel Dusk.
