i'm currently looking for work in the SF bay area (live in oakland). 23, graduated college with a degree in Philosophy. practical skills include: writing, unarmed combat. spent most of my time in college working in student groups, doing video games journalism stuff, and an internship with a major SF film festival. i can still afford to be picky about job-applying, but the boredom is taxing.

how do you spend your plentiful free time? me, i exercise, train BJJ, write occasionally, listen to NPR, read too many blogs, and cook. oh, and i just beat mother 3.

what was your first "real" job?

Write SOMETHING every day, whether it's philosophy, fiction, or journalism (forum posting doesn't count!). Go out every night: if you haven't made friends in the Bay Area yet, go to places where you might meet people. When you know enough people, use your cooking skills to throw dinner parties. The people who come will feel obligated to you and give you jobs!

My first job was the Mickey Ds across the street from the Space Needle in Seattle. It was really hectic but kind of fun because I worked with people from all over the world.

Learn how to program, craigslist is full of 'need programmer now!' type jobs. Picking up Ruby+Rails or something related will probably be pretty easy, especially if you've done anything logic related before. Plus, having great writing skills can only help, write/right?

Also make a portfolio of work and shop it around, alot of people prefer that over scraps of paper called degrees.

how long do people take to "learn how to program"? other than a few aborted attempts with C in high school (during the I REALLY WANT TO MAKE GAMEZ period of my life) i've never really dabbled with a modern programming language.

I have the knack for picking up Freelance stuff. I worked on some building sites over the summer for my uncle and before that I was a Roadie/A/V Engineer/Cameraman/Lighting Technician for a TV company in London.

At the moment I am studying for a BSc in Journalism so not too much job time (Even though I want one for to have some cash about). Otherwise. I write (Not as much as I did a few years ago. I should because when I did, I won some money in some Literature competitions), play video games and work out a lot.

Since nowadays PCs have enough power you basically can do anything to get a job/task done, however, if your Prof. is willing to teach you something he looks at how you did it.

I'm glad to have quite knowledgeable profs that actually take their time to look at your code and tell you what you are doing wrong/how not to do it. This comes in handy now that I have a mandatory assembler/mc68000-course where ressources are not eaxactly abundant. Especially the prof helps a lot by explaining it in such a way that it's really easy to get what the problems are with limited ressources. And this is the thing that takes its time, to learn how to do the job properly.

My first real job was in a warehouse for a paper company putting together product samples for potential clients.
It was fun for a high school kid but only lasted one summer. My next job was at Boston Chicken where I started in utility and then line cook. That was through the rest of high school.

Anyway, I have a friend at the SF Chronicle I'll ask him if anything is available.

If I don't get into grad school I am going to apply for a flight attendant job. The perks are tempting enough.
