Pop'n Music 12 - Iroha. On DualShock. Been playing this for about a week and now I think I'm up to challenge with easy 9 button songs. The whole game (when played on standard PS2 controller) is more like a real-time puzzle translation game (the kind of stuff the translators at UN do) than an arcade game.
Also the visual style is drop dead gorgeous.
Also it has Zankoku no Tenshi and a great Gradius Megamix.
I take it, that other Pop'n Music games are as good as this?

And BlockSum. This will surely be a legendary game.

I've been also finishing Dragovian Trials in DQ8. I'm seriously underlevelled for that stuff (or chose a wrong path for Jessica) as Angelo is the only person with sure-fire revive spell. Blasted Dragons do a critihit on him just about every two rounds...

I've got Carnival too, but haven't even run it yet, Iroha has put me into an unlock spree mode unrivaled as of yet. I mean, almost every 10 minutes game gives you something. I totally dig that.
I totally dig the series too, dunno if it's the visual style or just my secret, repressed j-pop craving, but I simply can't stop thinking about the games (heck, I've even thought of taking some Gameboy emu and Pop'n GB to work today to practice. Didn't happen earlier with any game).

Any other Bemani games that are good when played on DualShock? DDR doesn't look like a lot of fun without the dance mat. What about Beatmania?

Okay, something's wrong. I've unlocked just about everything in Pop'n 12 (the ninja shooting minigame doesn't show up, at least at Enjoy 5 button mode), but there's still plenty of stuff to unlock, if the Secret menu is to be believed.

Also, although Challenge Mode has all the songs unlocked, Enjoy got only two new ones (Christmas Medley and the Goemon Song). While there's this:

Am I missing something here?

Those are rather... extreme. Gonna take a while till I'm good enough for any of them...

Also, enjoy mode is an introductory mode that's crippled intentionally in order to reduce confusion for introductory-level players, so songs that you've unlocked not showing up in there is normal.

Well, I'm an introductory-level, and playing Enjoy mode was enjoying to say the least. Pity, Challenge is fun up to, say, level 8 and with most of song in the higher tens margin, I'd hope for at least having them in easy mode.
Well, back to practice then.

Second ending of DQ8. Not sure what to do now, next Dragovian Trial requires weeks of pointless leveluping.
And I've got DQ7 to play or DQ6 to replay (didn't play the secret dungeon last time, and that's where quite a lot of fun is in DQ games)

//Edit

So, okay, Pop'n Music 13. What the fuck happened here? It's kinda bad, when the only interesting, noncringe songs are the ones from the previous game...
Enjoy Mode is seriously fucked up (larger Pop-kuns make the game actually harder! The tutorial that has to be skipped each and every time is also not really that nice). Also, is it me, or do the notes seem uninspired in this one?
Also the Carnival theme is not really my style.

I guess Iroha was just a lucky shot on Konami's part...

You have some awfully bizarre complaints. Ones that I've never even heard before! I don't know what to tell you, honestly. It's probably not the game for you. Which is fine, since you're just playing it with a dual shock and stuff.

I'm pretty amazed myself. I mean, the games don't differ that much, but all I can think while playing Carnival is 'meh, I'm pushing buttons and there's a music playing', while Iroha is more like 'I'm pushing buttons and there's a music playing. Moar, MOAR!!!'...

Started Dragon Quest 7 for the third time. Maybe I'll even finish it this time (quit at Sphinx the first time, then one or two subplots after Dharma Shrine)...

I've tried playing Dicing Knight... Well, I guess I'd like this much much more if the game was for a system with higher resolution. As such the whole fighting system is pretty much random for me.

Put some more time into Pop'n Music 13... Well, the challenge mode is nice, and some songs are simply amazing (Suikoden V Medley, Arabian Magic Medley). Guess it's just Enjoy Mode that was fucked up here...

Did also play some Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 with a friend. Amazingly good game! The feeling of deflecting an enemy's fireball swarm with your hands - priceless.

Consider that it's a free game, done by one guy in his spare time. And it's still ages better than any Castlevania game.

Any advice which one would be a nice introduction to the series?

Dragon Quest 1 of course. The remixed GBC or SNES version to be exact.

I might start Vagrant Story in a few minutes?

Talk about coincidence. I've finished Vagrant Story a while ago, and I'm just starting DW7 (in the intro as of yet, before the first fight). Heck, if I keep it up, I might even finish FF12 before 2010...

Finished unlocking everything in Pop'n Music 13 (well, the Request songs are left, but as they are massive damage 9-line songs I don't think I'll get
to play them until owning a Pop'n controller (read: ever)).

Final thoughts:

Pop'n 12 - amazing default songs, nice stuff to unlock
Pop'n 13 - mediocre default songs, 'holy cow, it's so amazing' stuff to unlock (I mean, Genso Suikoden 5 song alone could make my day).

Did try some Beatmania IIDX 12, but even with 5-line, Auto-Scratch and Pop'n skin, it kinda doesn't speak with me. Pop-kuns are smaller, which messes my timing considerably. And the videos are annoying to say the least.
Also no moe-loli factor, so...

Played some Lumines Plus. Wow, nice game, though some themes are a bit hard to 'read'. Getting the hang of gameplay rules, I seem to be the only one not having played/watched the PSP original/freeware remakes.

Also some DQ7 and Marathon mode of Pop'n Music 12 (track 66/99, so I'm almost near the end). Fun times.

Started playing Pop'n on 9-line.
Fuck, you have to relearn just about everything bout the game. I've beaten just about everything on 5-line in Pop'n 12 and 13 (well, there's one song in P'n 12 that I can't clear for the life of me), and I can't fucking clear a fucking 9 in Normal.
Oh well, back to Enjoy Mode, gonna have to practice a while.

Churning away in DQ7 (finished the Volcano part, yeah, I know, I'm slow).
I've also started Sly Racoon (first 3 stages, plays great so far, sans the friggin unskippable tutorial turtle). Too bad the stealth part is kinda nonexistant for now, all the enemies are placed in a way that it's usually not possible to sneak past them.
And uhh, yeah, my mother (50+) discovered StepMania. To quote 'great workout'.

Pop'n Music on 9-line.
With my girlfriend doing the white/yellows. Did even one no-miss (and one I've botched on the last freaking pop-kun, arrrgh), cleared some hypers even (the easier ones of course, but still).
Man, screw Rock Band, that's some good coop game...

It's not too spectacular and I was expecting a little more, but it's put well together and some of the puzzle/gameplay elements are refreshing. A little bit of toned-down metrovania styled linear exploration makes it for a relaxing game to play, actually. The music is great, too.

Wait for the extra stages. They're what really makes the game.

Started FFXII.
Man, this MMORPG shit is surprisingly fun when there are no other people to spoil it for you.

Also this game really puts the 'fear of the monster' in you. Seeing stuff like Wild Saurian or Gnoma Entite prowling around your lvl10 characters is an experience I wouldn't mind more RPGs replicated.

And moar large, huge-ass enemies. Think how awesome would a RPG be with monsters the size of colossi from SotC. Heck, make them have parasites (ticks, the like) which would decimate the party while trying to climb the fucker for the kill. Or make a monster so big, that the party would get swallowed, get into it's bloodstream and fight lymphocytes the size of a whale...

The puzzles were nicely done, the battles fun (and fast going to boot!). and the ability to read NPC's mind was pretty awesome (too bad the game didn't go far with it, but well...)

I'm hopeful that by the time they made Jak 3 they realized that the game doesn't have to include every genre and just picks a couple to try and excell at, but my hopes aren't raised.

Jak 2 was truly gorgeous. It had a sprawling city, beautifully rendered vistas and great platforming sections.
Too bad the rest of the game (about 90%) was crappy racing missions, crappy ring racing missions and crappy ring racing missions XTREME!!
Stopped playing the game about 20% through... God, that race engine was an abomination...

Played some Grandia 3.

I wouldn't mind the not-so-great graphics, the horrible, horrible dub work and assraping plot if it weren't for the fact that the game is so fucking easy you'd have to be a blind fruitbat with chopped off limbs for it to pose any challenge.

Seriously, all RPGs should have a 'Normal' and 'Hard' difficulity level in addition to current 'Pussy'.

Nice, though it takes a while to get used to. First time I played with it I couldn't even clear one heart songs in Enjoy Mode (and I could DualShock just about every 5-line song, and go up to 35 in coop 9-line).

It's clicky as hell though. Much louder than I'd imagine. And sensitive as hell. I think even breathing on buttons registers as a keypress. ;)

Given that an ASC would be like 200$ more (what with shipping costs and shipping tax in Euro zone), I don't see me buying it in foreseeable future.
Not that I wouldn't like one - you can't really coop on Minicon. :(

9 hours into Digital Devil Saga...

WTF? It's an jRPG that requires some thoughtful playing, doesn't have an annoying teen upstart main character, has some nifty puzzles/dungeon crawling and annoying filler music replaced with not so annoying filler rock music...

I mean, it's like playing Resident Evil without the zombies, shooting and a good story.

I feel weirded out by this.

Been getting better and better at Pop'n Music. I can clear most songs up to 20 now.

It really is a scary game though. You see this wall of notes rushing to meet you and you're like 'WTF? Is that even possible? No way I'm gonna clear that' and then your brain shuts down and your hands take over and you're popping shit left and right... Strange feeling...

Started playing Sly 2 again, wrapped up 5th episode and started 6th one (the snow one with trains).
Seriously, what's with all the hate for this game? Hadn't had so much fun with a platformer for a while. Sure, it's a radical departure from the first part, but it's not Jak or something (which changed from great seamless platformer into bland furry GTA clone with terrible driving controls). The only thing that's changed for worse are the boss fights (though, I dunno, they've been getting better and better).

Also, was the music done by that Lucasarts that scored Curse of Monkey Island? I can totally hear the resemblances.

Well, they're not the hardest games ever, true.
I'd say they are on par with Psychonauts (with the exception of time challenges in Sly 1). And the story and level design are also on par with Psychonauts.
The reception here (and just about everywhere), compared to Psychonauts is rather weak though...

I mean, when it comes to Sucker Punch games I still prefer Rocket over Sly, but that doesn't really make Sly games bad.

I'm surprised by the serious lack of love for MLB Power Pros on the interwebs.

Been playing this for a while and it ranks up with Baseball Stars 2 in the fun factor. And this is with me being a serious baseball n00b (what with living in Europe and all).

Finishing up the first Ratchet & Clank (hunting the gold bolts, looking for secret areas, etc).
Love the game but I'd love it even more if it had a way of raising bolt output. Still missing cash for the later weapons, not to mention the gold upgrades, and grinding for cash isn't really that fun here...
Some bonus combo score multiplies for instance.

Well, fuck this.

Wanted to give SMT3 a go, and looks like the PAL version is fucking riddled with gamebreaking bugs... Everytime Zio is being cast the game just freezes.

If you've played SMT3, you know how kinda bad this is. Not sure if this is just my copy of the game, or is my PS2 acting up (though the NTSC version of the game doesn't exhibit this problem)...
Damn, will need either to play in B/W or switch to playing on the PC.

It's not really available anywhere here ATM. I do have the NTSC original, but have to obviously play with a Swap Magic...
It's probably just my PS2 laser, the NTSC version does have some awkward pauses here and there, no replicable crashes though.
