Ever wanted to know how the truly nasty Street Fighter: The Movie arcade game and equally terrible PSX/Saturn games were created?

No?

Well that's a pity, because Alan Noon, a co-designer, sprite artist and the guy in the Blade/F7/Khyber mask, is currently writing a very interesting behind the scenes viewpoint into the creation of this game. You can read about it in this thread on the shoryuken.com forums.

Learn why SF:TM was created, how Sheng Long almost made it into the game, why Sawada replaced Fei Long and much more.

SF:TM is absolutely fucked as a fighting game because of the horrendously stilted animation, terribly stiff controls and complete utter lack of personality. It did however, introduce a group of interesting gameplay ideas that were subsequently used and perfected by much better games. Stuff like the EX moves (Vampire Savior, SF3), varying levels of stun, combo damage scaling and technical hits (absolute shit in this game). It also has the most freeform combo system this side of Street Fighter EX and the Capcom Versus games.

SF:TM, by proxy of the console games, also gave us Sawada's fucking hilarious super.

Alan Noon is currently working at Day 1 Studios (F.E.A.R. for X360 and PS3, the Xbox Mechassault games).

And this game still plays better than any of the Mortal Kombats.

I've always wondered what happens to the guys who do the mocap for these things. Do they regret it when walking by a liquor store and seeing Mortal Kombat on there?

Was Jean-Claude a big bitch to get voice recording from? He doesn't say Sonic Boom in the game, I think. So he was probably to busy having hookers and blow to even bother going by the studio.

Chicago used to be "it" for the arcade scene. Oh how I miss those days.

That's an interesting thread. It's a shame I have to read through the posts of SRK regulars to see it :(

Good stuff. I've never even played the game, but it's a fun read.

Tell him to contact Retro Gamer magazine. We'd pay him to write a making of article.... Probably. I dunno, I've resigned from the mag, but I'd love to see this story in print.[/url]

I vaguely remember getting the PSX version purely because it was StreetFighter and being horrified.

You also got some peculiar unrelated music video when you finished the survival mode or something.

Well, I feel it's a fascinating story about an often maligned game. Even if a game is bad, I'd still like to read about how it came about. Fascinating stuff. Besides, how many people read that website? If it's in print, chances are more people will have access to it... Maybe. Unless you bombard forums regarding his posts.

Besides, stuff in print seems somehow... more solid.

Oh, and I actually quite like the arcade version of SF:TM.

Sorry, I only meant to quote "I've resigned from the mag."

Oh, well, basically I hated my job. And I think I've found another position at another company which is nicer to work for. Fingers crossed I get a solid state paper-based contract in the post soon.

There are so many things wrong with that video. They mention that the barrel bonus stage has been included, but show footage of the falling barrel stage that was already in SFII. I think they meant the flaming oil drum bonus stage.

Also, better music? No -- they used the exact same sound engine that was in SFII. In other words, the same sound engine used in SNES Final Fight.

I was going to say they should make MK: The Movie: The Game, except that's what they all were.

So I got to playing SFTM on MAME. It's, strangely, less crap than SvC, but has much less personality, so it isn't as replayable. The combo system is fucking nuts. You can juggle, buffer specials into specials and all sorts of crazy shit.

My favorite part was Balrog having Chun-li's giggle during his win pose.
(I played the saturn version... I think...)

I bought my brother Street Fighter: the movie on DVD last christmas. That movie is strangely awsome in a totally "they destroyed my youth... to the Xtreme!!" kinda way.
